Mario Kart Wii Has Been Hiding A Secret Mode For Almost Ten Years

Did you know Mario's favorite snacks are mushrooms? He's a real fungi.

Mario Kart Wii has been harboring a deep secret for the last nine years--an unused mission mode hidden within the game's code. Eagle-eyed YouTuber MrBean35000vr uncovered the mode.

MrBean35000vr, a Mario Kart 8 hacker and streamer, claims that within the 2008 title, the main menu actually has five options in its code rather than the four we've come to know. In his video, he shows this to be true, pulling up sub-menus that lack any text but do work as options for some sort of Mission Mode similar to the one seen in Mario Kart DS.

"The menus for Mission Mode have no available text, but the game is trying to load them; they’ve simply been erased," he says. "Similarly, a massive file that would’ve contained mission parameters is not present, and without it, the mode can’t start – UNLESS you simulate its existence, which is what I did. It attempts to load files out of the /Race/MissionRun folder on the disc, but that folder is empty, but that affects nothing since that folder would only have contained extra data (like where to place goombas or similar). As such, I was actually able to play a few games with the game in Misson state, and show off some of the game modes."

Mission Mode, as it was in Mario Kart DS, was a mode that presented players with a number of challenges to take on. It was a sort of mish-mash of races, mini-games, and the like. MrBean35000vr says this iteration sports 12 or 13 different missions, with one most likely deleted as it doesn't do anything. The missions include wheelies, defeating enemies, drifting, collecting item boxes and more. To see the mission mode in action, check out the video above.

All I got from this was a published writer, albeit just an article about a videogame, used "but" twice in a single sentence.

@heydink: That's not an easter egg. That's simply stuff that was deleted either because they didn't have time to finish it for launch or they didn't think it was worth it to finish it. Pretty much every games ever have deleted content.

@nintendians: They put those missions online and called it tournament mode. I didn't like that the missions were there for a limited time only and they were online only.

@nintendians: I don't remember playing that mode offline. You would have to access it online first. I don't think you can access that mode now after the server shut down.

Would be a cool story if someone found out more about mission mode from the team who created the game at Nintendo.

@Thanatos2k: According to the Google Dictionary definition, the term hidden as an adjective means kept out of sight. And since both states are not mutually exclusive, it's appropriate to consider it as such regardless of developer intent.

Remember what Snake tells Raiden at the end of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001).

"Don't obsess over words so much. Find the meaning behind the words, then decide." - Solid Snake, 2009

No matter the situation, Kojima always has the answer. Remember that, and you'll be fine.

Wow, its truely astonishing what fans can find hidden in games. This reminds me of what was found in donkey kong 64 a little while ago.

@savagerodent: A speedrunner found a hidden rainbow coin in the game earlier this year, not a unique hitherto unknown object, but an undiscovered instance of a common one. Nothing world-shattering, but a nice find nonetheless.

Edit: I edited this.

@asnakeneverdies: Is it the rainbow coin found at those DK mounds? If so I was surprised it wasn't common knowledge. I wasn't the only one who knew about this too, but I can see how it wasn't commonly known since it's difficult to know if you have absolutely every collectible in that game because there is no percentage for certain items like banana coins.

@savagerodent: There are probably hundreds of thing in pre-internet era games that someone somewhere has found but none of the modern streamers knows about, so they remain a mystery until one day. Just like in the much further past history there are "secrets" uncovered weekly, even if some living person still knew about them before.

And much like with all discoveries, someone has to take the credit, even if that person is the millionth to find it.

@savagerodent: Yes, it was one of those, and from what I've read, it was found by looking at some flags in the save file. It's surprising it took this long considering it's within the intended playable space of a level and several other much less discrete coins have been found outside of bounds in the game, regular collectibles whose position and state might not be saved to a file making it even more difficult to pinpoint their existence.

@asnakeneverdies: Yeah it may not mean much but it does change things a little bit for completionists and 100% runners of the game. I always find it interesting what people find in games, whats especially interesting is all of the datamining on shadow of the colossus
