Lord Of The Rings Star Has A Blunt Response When Asked If He Would Come Back For New Movies

"I've had enough of that."

Actor Hugo Weaving played Elrond in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies, but could he come back for the next set of fantasy films that are in the works?

Speaking to GamesRadar, Weaving said fans should count him out. "Personally, I've had enough of that," he said. Weaving explained that he had a fun time filming the trilogies in New Zealand, but said he has "had enough of Middle-earth." Not only does he not have interest in coming back, Weaving said, "I don't imagine anyone would ask me to do it again."

Beyond The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, Weaving starred in the movie Mortal Engines, from Lord of the Rings veteran Christian Rivers, Jackson, Philippa Boyens, and Fran Walsh. The movie was a dud, however. Weaving said this was supposed to be the team's next big franchise, "but it died on its arse."

Weaving also pointed out that Elrond is immortal, but the actor of course is not. He said he might simply be too old to be believable in the role today.

"Elrond is one of the few characters, I think there's only three or four of them, who spans through The Silmarillion, Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit," he said. "But even when we went back to reshoot certain parts of Lord of the Rings, I was aware I was older than I was before. And shooting stuff on The Hobbit was starting to get slightly silly. I loved being a part of that franchise but I have absolutely no plans or desires to be a part of it anymore."

The Hunt for Gollum, which is only a tentative title, is the next live-action Lord of the Rings movie. It's set for release in 2026 with Andy Serkis signed on to star and direct. Other Lord of the Rings stars have discussed potentially coming back for it, including Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), but no official casting announcements have been made as of yet.

The next Lord of the Rings movie is the animated film, War of the Rohirrim, which comes to theaters this December.
