L.A. Noire sells 899,000 in May

Rockstar and Team Bondi's crime drama sells less than a million across 360, PS3 as Take-Two shares slip 8 percent in past five days.

For the second year in a row, Take-Two subsidiary Rockstar Games scored the top-selling new release for the month of May, following up 2010's Red Dead Redemption with L.A. Noire. However, even if it was the best-selling new release at US retail, the Team Bondi-developed L.A. Noire performed significantly worse than Rockstar San Diego's open-world Western.

L.A. Noire's slow start is a bit of a mystery.
L.A. Noire's slow start is a bit of a mystery.

According to sales data obtained by MarketWatch, L.A. Noire sold 899,000 units across the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game. That figure comes in some 600,000 units below that of Red Dead Redemption, which received a marginally higher critical reception than L.A. Noire and sold 1.5 million units upon its release in May 2010.

L.A. Noire's sales performance, combined with Duke Nukem Forever's critical drubbing, has spooked Take-Two investors this week. Since Friday, the game company has seen its share value fall by nearly 8 percent to $14.49, though trading had largely stabilized today.

The performance of Team Bondi's action-investigation title was indicative of greater weakness in the US retail game market. Total industry sales fell 14 percent year-over-year to $743.1 million. Software was particularly weak in May, with combined console, handheld, and PC game sales falling 21 percent year-over-year to $400.1 million.

Guys remember that last month the hackers had taken PSN down and alot of PS3 gamers ended up buying a X360 just to keep playing CoDBlops so basically you also have to thank the dumb ass hackers for causing gamers to miss-distribute their money for an older game disrupting potential sales of LA Noire.

@hsmgaye Why would anyone want to port a console game to pc? All that will happen is that it will generate more revenue, but a few people will be able to pirate the game. Did I mention that this will also cause the death of two puppies, a kitten, and starving child with AIDS in Africa.

They just need to be happy that, although it didn't sell 1.5 million copies in the first month like Red Dead Redemption, it could have been far worse. I am looking forward to a sequel.

LA Noire is a quality game, I bought it and loved it. I also bought Assassins creed brotherhood on the same day which isn't half as good. (Don't quite get the appeal to them games). If a game has a big name it will sell well. Look at Call of Duty. LA Noire just didn't have the 'ping' appeal (as I'm calling it). A lot of gamers are kids, and won't be drawn in by the title. But then that's probably a good job, the murder scenes and crime stories can be quite graphic at times - covering everything from murder to child prostitution. It's brilliant once you get in to it, but definitely not one for children. For once I'm agreeing with the 18 rating :p

The problem is LA Noire just isnt that great of a game. It tries to be like Heavy Rain and GTA/Red Dead at the same time and basically comes off medicore on both ends of the spectrum. Its toted for its emotional responses, but honestly having played thru half the game, the questions dont really mean anything, since you can get all the questions wrong and still solve the case. You basically just walk around til you find the clues and follow the story on rails. It gets pretty boring after a while. At least Red Dead had muliplayer and an actual sandbox to play around in. In LANoire you are restricted to not even being able to use your gun etc when you want to. It has nothing to do with the platform, the game is just boring.

Like I've said before, Consoles market is too crowded, every publishers and devs jump on 'em.. some good games could not get some proper attention and huge market-share ................................................................................................................................. If only It's released on the PC, I'll gladly invest my money for them (Rockstar.), I'm not interesting having consoles (at least for now.), even if it's provided with superb games!! :P It's not because I'm hating consoles, It's just hard for me to "adjust" to those systems (360 & PS3.)!! I have my own platform of choice, "EVERY" people have their platform of choice, isn't?? :) :)

LA Noire's reviews were great but no where near as good as Read Dead, so that it's not selling as well is to be anticipated.

My problem with LA Noire is that it contains very little noire iconography. Granted I am only half way through, but where is the Femme Fatale, where are the wet streets at night reflecting neon signs and street lamps. Half of the game happens during the daylight hours. The game should have been called 40's detective.

Just finished the game today and I can honestly say I loved it. The pacing was a nice change and the story wrapped up in good noir fashion. Was it perfect? No, but what game is. Overall it felt like lightly interacting with a good mini-series. The interviewing should be tweaked a bit, however as a first effort I was impressed. Looking forward to future projects from Bondi.

@Frame_Dragger I loved Day of the tentacle, I loved Full throttle, I loved sam and max, And this game is terrible... EVERY action you do is done for you, Chasing people he automatically climbs fences, automatically jumps buildings, You just point your controller forward and the game does the rest. All your cases / actions are useless, if you get them wrong it just loops back and lets you do it again and again and again until you get it right "So who really cares about facial recognition when it doesn't matter?" .... Nothing in this game is decent apart from the facial recognition, it's a mediocre "movie" I hope rockstar don't sign for another one, It's a good "Movie" but at least DOTT had some comedy, And wacky gameplay... This is just a boring, stale, 12 hour movie that's "Alright". P.S. Heavy Rain is my fav game, SO yes, this genre is my cup of tea. the game is just "ok"..

@pip3dream: To be honest, if you go back to games like DOTT which are the model for this game, then it's the same aesthetic and gameplay in a very new format. I think that this is not your genre, although I admire that you were able to appreciate those elements of the game which were so excellent even if it didn't cater to your tastes as a package. Think of it this way: LA Noire is the first of a new wave of such games, or at least the first application of a particular technology... some game mechanics suffered, most notably a vast open world that was pretty to see... yet had almost nothing to offer as far as gameplay is concerned. Now imagine RDR, or Mass Effect, or Zelda, using this tech to draw you into the feelings of characters. This tech, and the way the story was told in a cinematic fashion can very well pave the way for its use in more conventional games to enhance the experience. Much as voice acting has added somethig to gaming, I think this is the next logical step.

LA Noir really left me wanting more. It's a frustrating game experience, because you can just SEE the potential of the game slipping by. The game just couldn't decide what it wanted to be, interactive movie, or a game. I have no problem with Adventure games, that are heavy on story telling and light on gameplay. In fact, one of my favorite game's to this day is DREAMFALL - which is a very polarising game. It has crappy game play, but an AMAZING, thought provoking, and immersive world and story. LA Noir had a lot going for it, but it just needed to decide what it wanted to be. As an interactive movie, it failed, because the story was crap - I mean, what the hell was the story? It was so mangled, and screwed up. And you can't blame it on the game being open world, because the game was really a linear experience disguised as an open world experience. But the gameplay was so shallow that it couldn't rely on that. Someone said this before, but seriously, how many beer bottles and fake clues do we need - it was such an exercise in tedium and arbitrariness. If you're going to have shallow gameplay, than you need to have a strong and coherent story that pushes you forward. I fell asleep so many times playing LA Noir out of boredom, and I'm being quite serious here. The game was so artificial.

I guess if you can't gun down innocent people on the street, then your game won't sell well. That's sad.

I really, really enjoyed LA Noire, and want to see more games like it. It really melded the casual genre with a very mature story with the best looking graphics and character models around. I came out of the end satisfied, and craving more. GOTY for me so far, and I'm glad it's not flopping at retail.

I personally feel that GTA, Red Dead, and LA Noire are all 'novelty' games...once the novelty wears off, you get a very hollow feeling inside...although I think red dead and la have improved on the GTA gameplay....

Oh well that will probably mean that other developers that may have been looking to try and follow on from Rockstar/Team Bondi's idea of the facial integration will now forget it and stick to a good 'ol First Person Shooter? Oh man, I really hope not! I do like the game of L.A.Noire a lot but I also feel that it could have been far much better than it was? Should it be though? I mean most game creators don't like to try and experiment with new concept ideas without knowing it is going to succeed 100% and that is what Team Bondi done here. They broke the bar and set new heights for others to follow. I really praise them for that! Yes Cole Phelp's adventure through L.A. is not THE best game ever made but I think it deserves so much more in the way of recognition for trying something new and it didn't suck too bad at all? Please though Developers... don't keep making FPS games every 2nd month or so, because that would suck BIG TIME!

LA Noire isnt really a game in the traditional sense, its more of an interactive movie or series of episodes of a show that would be on HBO. Its certainly not 1940s GTA V in LA. Because of the long development I bet this will be another Assassins Creed style of franchise where the first game came out to great expectations, was still pretty good but missed on a lot of aspects and the sequel will iron everything out and we will get a great game. I enjoy it, and I definitely get into the stories with the amazing acting. Ill probably play through two more times, once as a bumbling detective who just believes everything people tell him and see how that works, and then the final perfect play through and be satisfied with my $60 investment.

I've been playing L.A. Noire for a little while now, but I can honestly say that it's the most overrated game I've played in years. Choices don't seem to affect much other than your case rating. The simple street crimes rarely have any resolution other than putting the perp in a body bag. I admire the attempt by Rockstar, but this game just falls flat.

Maybe it because most of their previous titles catered to fans of uber violence and itchy trigger fingers. I mean we've gone from car jackings to shoot outs to serial killing to being the baddest in the wild west to...criminal investigation? Yeah, something in this equation is just slightly different than everything else. Seriously though, you can't just up and change your usual controversial format and target audience and not expect your numbers fall even by a little bit.

Those are still some respectable numbers for what is pretty much almost a new genre of game.... it just doesn't look very high for what Rockstar are used to selling, which lets face it are often astronomical figures. I don't think there will be any doubt of a sequel of sorts, and the tech they forked out for with the facial animations will more than pay for itself when it's used in other R* games like GTA etc. I think this news report paints a bad picture when infact it looks pretty healthy to me. PS. LA Noire rocks hard. Easily best game I've played in the last 12 months.

This sucks :( Another quality game doesn't sell as well as it should because consumers are bloody stupid and only want COD 15 which isn't very different from COD 4. I hope games like L.A. Noire don't become extinct because of this.

@MJ12-Conspiracy: I think you misunderstand... I have no doubt (at least I hope) that LA Noire keeps selling at a brisk pace, but for it to exceed in a single period, its first period sales would still be odd. Maybe I misunderstood you.

i think the witcher 2 sold better in Europe than LA NOIRE (including the digital sales) and it isn't a multiplatform , the game was gold some months ago and that only from preorders.......eh nvm PC never gets attention ...as for LA NOIRE it would have been better for them to release it on pc too , but again we pc users are "pirates".......bleah

I think I'll wait for the collectors edition, I don't wanna pay for everything single DLC. I didn't like the DLC experience with Alan Wake, having missing chapters/episodes that I needed to wait, and then buy them, play them, and still not feel satisfied, (the story had too many plot holes or complexity, and the gameplay became stale for being too repetitive. I need a demo.

I read it has sold worldwide 1.4 million on ps3 and 1.6 million on 360. The success in sales for this game strangely has been double more in Europe than in the U.S. I think it will reach at least between 4 and 5 million sales worldwide within a year which is great for such a different game that's a new IP and hopefully a new franchise for Rockstar.

"L.A. Noire's slow start is a bit of a mystery." It's not a mistery, everyone knows that it's not an FPS so it won't sell like COD which is a shame because this game deserves more than COD.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the type of game that continues to sell decently over a long period of time, ending up very successful in the long run.At least it should, being one of the 4 games released this year that will actually deserve success.
