Konami powers full Mercury Steam ahead

Japanese publisher enlists Spanish studio for unnamed X360, PS3 project that will "form a major part" of the publisher's 2009 lineup.

It seems fairly safe to say that with the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PlayStation 3 in June, Konami is pretty much covered in the major title department for the year. However, aside from The Collective's Silent Hill 5, the publisher's future lineup of big-name titles appears sparse.

Today, however, Konami parted the curtain ever so slightly to reveal plans for its next would-be hit. The publisher announced it had signed on Mercury Steam for an as-yet-unnamed project for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Details on the project are next to nonexistent, but the publisher did say "the title will form a major part of Konami's 2009-2010 line-up."

Mostly recently, Mercury Steam partnered with Codemasters on the tepidly received horror-themed shooter Clive Barker's Jericho for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The Madrid, Spain-based outfit also handled development duties on America McGee's Scrapland in 2004. Konami also painted the project as a big win for its development extension into Europe. Konami's European arm is currently wrapping development on New International Track and Field for Nintendo's DS.

@flyingdutchdog I agree. I'm upgrading my GPU in a month to a nvidia GeForce 9600. That's going to put my PC well beyond 360 and probably PS3. AND, it'll only cost roughly $200-a fraction of either console. Hell, I've got Oblivion on both PC and 360. It looks pretty close with my sh---y 8500. So 9600 will get me by for a good stretch. The strange thing is: I don't fancy myself a 'tech-head'. Flashy graphics are nice, but I don't get hung up on them. My major concern is actually very practical; why buy another clunky box for gaming, when I can get most of the games I like on a device I already use everyday-my PC. Then there's the issue of BC. The Wii is the only console that FULLY supports BC. I own a XBox360 and its BC is half-assed. PS3 has none, at $400! Hell when I buy a new PC, about 2-3years from now, I can take out my RAM and GPU and install them in my new hardware. I highly doubt Micro$oft will allow me to use the 360 harddrive, mem cards, controllers, etc.. on their next-gen console. At this point, PC gaming is simply more practical. But because I can't trade in PC games, I only buy games with exponential REPLAY VALUE. This has made me a serious stickler for quality. When 'Mass Effect' hits the PC, in May, I'll probably trade in my 360.

@jacob-goodlich Do you know what your talking about? That makes no sense whatsoever. There is no more potential on the PS3 then on the 360 (get that through your head). The life-span of each system will be about the same, unless you believe that crap Sony spun about the lifespan of its console. Both are already behind the PC graphics wise ... and we know the lifespan of an up to date PC usually isn't more then two years. By that reasoning both the 360 and the PS3 will be behind the PC four years.

Uhhh... Clive Barker's Jericho? Oh god, I hope Koonami can put some serious money and talent behind these guys, otherwise, they're kinda screwed.

Both Silent Hill and Contra have recaptured some lost magic by outsourcing their franchises to the west, the PS2 Castlevania team doesn't really exist anymore (and IGA was looking for new developers for next gen) so it's likely that Castlevania could be the title that they're talking about. One of the major problems of the PS2 games was the boring level design, so if that's remedied then they are halfway there. But even so, if they exclude all three minds of Koji Igarashi, Ayami Kojima and Michiru Yamane from the process... then it isn't Castlevania anymore. Yes I know that wasn't the case prior to 1997 (and for the first ten years of the series), but that's just how I see it personally.

I wish they would give Suikoden details. I know they are not refering to it though, seeing as how it was stated "the title will form a major part of Konami's 2009-2010 line-up."

@natethemighty honestly the 3d castlevania's aren't a good idea at the moment. Most of them are decent, and a 3d castlevania would horribly ruin the rep the game has gained. Another Castlevania, perhaps? Best handheld series IMO

Jericho was horrible, so hopefully this one will redeem Mercury.

LOL, that's the first Japanese-radical I've ever read, thanks for the laughs kamiboy. Konami isn't abandoning Japan, they're just expanding into Europe and America. Seeing as how the populations there exceed that of Japan by about 10,000:1 I'm sure they can find some competent developers somewhere. Ever heard of Mass Effect, KOTOR, the Witcher, and other non-FPS, Western developed games? There are quality developers all over the world (including Japan, yay!), so save your nonsense and play all the good games out there, no matter where they come from. Mkay?

if its going to be big then it should only be on the ps3 because of its potential ,and the 360 probably would have died before 2009,2010. but anyway still sounds good.

Of course id love a 3d Castlevania, or an amazingly detailed Silent Hill, what ive been waiting to hear about is a new Suikoden. Its been one of my fav games for along time, and to have it on a next gen console with decent graphics would be an amazing thing for me. Whatever they decide to make I'll definitely be keeping an eye out.

YAY! Despite the issues that plagued Jericho from start to finish, there's still something about it I liked a lot. I'm glad to see that they're getting another shot. I know there's a quality developer in there somewhere.

Like cous65 said, a new 3D Castlevania, if done right, would rock. Gameplay similar to great action/adventure games like God of War and DMC, with the rpg elements of SOTN would be a dream come true.

Hopefully a new Castlevania in 3D which works round the N64 story quality more than the Ps2 one.
