The Japanese voice actor for the various incarnations of Snake in the Metal Gear Solid series has said Kojima Productions no longer exists as a development studio.

Otsuka Akio, who has voiced Solid Snake and Big Boss in the console and portable Metal Gear Solid titles, revealed the news in a Twitter update, which Japan-focused gaming website Gematsu has translated.

"[Kojima Productions] has been disbanded,: he said. :It appears that the work that the team has been putting their utmost effort into is nearly complete.:

Akio went on to say he believes Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be the team's greatest work.

:I’m not exaggerating when I say that I expect it will become their greatest masterpiece,: he continued. :I couldn’t help it. I just wanted to say 'Kept you waiting, huh?' But even if this is the end, Metal Gear Solid is immortal!"

Konami has not yet officially announced whether Kojima Productions has ceased to operate. GameSpot has contacted the company for a statement.

In March 2015 GameSpot revealed that senior staff at Kojima Productions had been given restricted access to corporate internet, emails, and phone calls, following ongoing power struggles between Kojima Productions and its parent company Konami.

Senior staff at the studio, including Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, were essentially working as contractors, as opposed to permanent employees, with a focus on completing work on The Phantom Pain.

A source at the studio explained that, once the Phantom Pain's development was complete, management at the studio would likely disband and Kojima would leave.

"After we finish MGSV, Mr. Kojima and upper management will leave Konami. They said their contract ends in December," the source claimed. "At a team meeting, Mr Kojima explained that team have to be one and make a good game for fans."

In the weeks following, Konami removed the Kojima Productions logo from all official Metal Gear marketing mater--past and present. The branding was also been removed from Twitter, the official Metal Gear website, and even the LA office listing.

Konami said at the time that "Mr. Kojima will continue to develop and support Metal Gear products."

Silent Hills, which was set to be co-directed by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro, is also believed to be a casualty of the collapse of Kojima Productions. Konami cancelled the project in April 2015.

A month later, Del Toro discussed the cancellation of Silent Hills, saying that split between Konami and Hideo Kojima was "completely unexpected."

A key executive at Konami later said the company will "pursue mobile games aggressively" going forward, and that smartphones will be considered its "main platform."

I don't idolize the guy but he and his team made some excellent games. I guess all good things must pass, but it's a shame.

"Konami later said the company will "pursue mobile games aggressively" going forward, and that smartphones will be considered its "main platform.""

Well there you have it. All future Metal Gear games will be on launched on the iPhone and not made by Kojima. I sure hope to enjoy this last, great Metal Gear before this shit company ruins the franchise.

O.O if that "pursue mobile games aggressively" is true and other companies follow it, than we'll be stuck with the same developers for AAA games. Same series over and over, a few will control and rule the market. We'll be playing a lot of FIFA and COD, might be the only things left.

Disbanded? Well, that pretty much tells me that Kojima might have been a great game designer, but he sucks at running a company. I'm sure he has enough cash to retire to some lolicon paradise he's purchased, but for him to disband a successful company rather than pass it down to future Kojima heirs is anticlimactic. His company could have lasted decades longer had he put the right team in place. Instead he just bails altogether while giving the one finger salute to all his analysts, designers, and developers that now have to find new jobs. Very lame Kojima.

@ares: Its not really his company though. Kojima Productions was owned by Konami, and Kojima was simply another employee with title of director. So you see, Kojima productions disbanding has more to do with Konami switching tracks to mobile gaming than it does with Kojima himself.

Yeah.... smartphones? Give me a bleeping break, unless you are going to make 2D RPG's and other games, smartphones suck for gaming.

@Leria: What you have to keep in mind... in Japan (Konami is a Japanese company) the Japanese are constantly commuting and live a much more "hustle bustle" lifestyle than most Westerners. Games on smart phones are EXTREMELY popular and successful in Japan. Just as much as console games are, if not more.

That is terrible news for people who don't like them though, like nearly everyone in the US who isn't a casual gamer.

It kinda sucks hearing this from the Japanese voice actor instead of David Hayter. I know Kojima gave him the boot but still...

Everybody should buy this game whether it's good or bad just to show Konami that mobile gaming isn't the way to go. Although Konami has pretty much been a Japanese focused company and that's what's popular there.

Konami making mobile games? That's kind of a downgrade. I mean, Mobile games are popping right now, but this is one of the companies that made console gaming legitimate (Metal Gear Solid on PS1) and introduced another level of story-telling. Now they're limiting themselves to apps and Iphone games? They fire Kojima to do this?

Something tells me that the damned business degrees got involved here and saw "No return or not enough return in console gaming!"

They need to learn that 5% profit on something is a damned good profit. 25% profits and up you should only see in companies that are doing something CRIMINAL, as my conservative business teacher in high school said.

5% profit is terrible...... most items you buy at the store are 50% or higher markups.... a 5% markup means you havo NO room for anything unexpected. The only way i'd accept a 5% profit was if i was moving MASSIVE amounts of product in bulk AND a buyer was already lined up. I have some experience in this stuff.... i'm not just pulling numbers out of my a $$.

I'm looking forward to hearing some good news come December then. Kojima has wanted to move on from MGS for some years now, so here's a golden opportunity to show the world what he's really made of.

And here we have he next big name we'll see on kickstarter in the future.

First Inafune and his not so blue bomber, then Igarashi and his bloody castle crawler and soon we'll see Kojima and his new game about sneaking super soldiers and atomic robots and/or a town that scares people shitless.

Does anyone else see a trend here....?

Anyway, Konami's loss.

You forgot about Shenmue 3.....

Anyway, it seems unlikely that Kojima will follow the same path. At the very least, he claimed to be very tired about continuing the Metal Gear series. He might want to create new games, but nothing like Metal Gear.

sigh... may the Zone of Enders series rest in peace. You had such a short life of only two games in which ZOE2 was simply on another level. The feel of fast mechs from classic anime like tekkaman, escaflowne, even gundam, was fully realized in ZOE2.

You had such a short series, even when it was clear MGS was getting SO tired after so many games, this gem was a breath of the freshest air cut short at only two games. And now, lost to the sea of internet trolls, and casual gamers, crying foul over a series' MUCH needed end, to the few that recognize this gem as precious,

RIP Jehuty

@Kalbent: Three games. There was a Gameboy Advanced game called Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars. It was a turn based strategy RPG if I recall.

There was also a movie called Zone of the Enders: 2167 Idolo which serves as a prequel to the games and follows the original Orbital Frame pilot.

And then there was a tv series called Zone of the Enders: Dolores which follows an alcoholic trucker who is trying to reunite with his estranged family and ends up finding an Orbital Frame named Dolores. I think it also took place before the games but after Idolo (obviously).

So if you want some more ZoE content there's those things. The movie was pretty good. I only watched like the first three episodes or so of the series but it was decent.

THis is how the story ends. Konami enters mobile games thinking they will make so much money from micro transactions and ads. Then late realize that they have turned into a sinking ship and close down.

Kojima opens a new studio called Kojima production. Gets massive funding and start producing great game that will sell billions depending on how successful MGS5 is. And the story continues.

now that it is over im sure we will get new games and new ideas that aren't tied to a story that's how many decades old...

MGS will continue but it will turn into duke nukem

oh and konami owns MGS dont they? so even if he wanted to he cant take it with him...

Let's face it.,MGS single handedly kept Konami's doors open. He stayed because he knew it was their biggest franchise and lots of peoples lively hoods depend on metal gear solid.

@Bread_or_Decide: I hope MGS5 turns out to be good game and after that I personally would not like to see another MGS. Would appreciate something new. I dont want it to become another COD (which I think Konami will intend on making)

If Kojima were to team up with another company I personally can find four different studios that would be a good match, imo. What do you think?

1. Naughty Dog
2. Square Enix
3. Bioware
or,
4. CD Project Red
