Kit Harington Says Game Of Thrones Led To Mental Health Issues

Filming the epic series for almost eight years took its toll on the star.

In a new interview, Game of Thrones star Kit Harington has said that filming the epic series took a toll on his mental health, leading to the actor having to take a year off from work. Speaking to Jess Cagle on SiriusXM, Harington pointed to the show as the source of "mental health difficulties" he experienced, as picked up by THR.

"I went through some mental health difficulties after Thrones, and during the end of Thrones, to be honest," he told Cagle. "I think it was directly due to the nature of the show and what I had been doing for years."

Now Playing: Game Of Thrones - The Cast Signs Off

Harington starred as Jon Snow in all eight seasons of Game of Thrones, a commitment that ran from late 2010 to mid 2018. In May 2019, just after the final season finished airing, Harington made headlines when he checked himself into a luxury rehab facility to focus on his mental health.

In the recent interview, Harington explained that he decided to take a break after the massive series ended to "really concentrate on myself." He added: "I'm really happy I did that." The actor's timing was, unfortunately, less than ideal, however, as he explained that "just when I was wanting to come back to work the pandemic hit."

Harington has finally been able to get back to work, however, with his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe due later this year in November's Eternals. In the meantime you'll be able to catch him in an episode of Amazon Prime's second season of Modern Love, a role Harington said he took on for a bit of fun.

"You don't have to live in that intense place all the time," Harington explained. "Why don't you do something that takes the weight off? Why don't you do something fun?"

The interview also covered some lighter topics, such as one of Harington's fondest memories from filming the show.

I find that I have to go see a shrink after pretending to be someone while playing an RPG and when I was Dracula for the college play. Oh, the horror...

No, that's not true... the shrink part was fabricated.

People seem more fragile these days. How about some perspective!

Try getting deployed overseas surrounded by people who want to kill you, and dealing with that stress and exposure.

How about firefighters getting surrounded by a massive forest fire? Sounds pretty stressful.

I really don't give a shit about some actor having a mental break for pretending to be something he isn't. You memorize some lines, play dress-up, and rake in a lot of cash to go play pretend for a living. smh

What a waste of time article.

There seems to be a media push about mental health lately. For example, there are a lot of articles about different Olympic athletes experiencing mental health issues, this season.

I wonder what the agenda is... perhaps mental health lockdowns?

@naryanrobinson:

'How does it feel to have won'?

Not that bothered tbh because it's written by one of the many sheep who seem to always forget what happened yesterday. Right now it's 'mental health'. Before that it was all 'Black Lives Matter'.

All these things have been around before people like you found them. That's right. They actually existed many many years ago. Right now mental health just seems to be the latest 'in' thing and of course your gonna get the famous people jump on the hype train.

@saitohiraga: Yeah or maybe, MAYBE,
even despite how brain-meltingly jealous some people are,
famous people are actually humans as well!
(I know it's shocking but bear with me)
And maybe, just MAYBE,
they actually do feel debilitatingly upset sometimes,
(yes DESPITE having money, it's insane, just humour me)
and all that's happened now is,
it's become more acceptable to talk about it publicly.
No. No, it's just... it's just too crazy, I know.

You should probably just take it as an opportunity
to belittle everyone around you,
and drown everything in cynicism
to make yourself sound wise and tough,
since that's obviously what's important to you guys.

I guess this is the latest propaganda subject that they want to push. The previous was "Asians being hated on" Only Mongol style Asians though.

I seriously don't understand his mental health issues (unless something else is going on in his life) because that show has earned him very good money, good side projects (movies/video game characters), earned him a nice looking (and seemingly fun) partner for life, good friends from the show and also get to see beautiful places in the world while filming it....so what more does he expect in life? he should be really lucky that he got loads of cash at a very young age so he can atleast need not worry about one big & crucial thing in life, which is Money. If the mental health issues are arising purely from finishing the Game of Thrones project that has run for 8 years for you, then I've no pity for you whatsoever! So, Kit, get a grip and be grateful with what you've and what you've achieved.

Honestly pretty sad and pathetic that people attack Kit Harrington over this. Judging by this comment section.

Sharing personal facts = omfg virgin banshee looking for attention.

If you are rich, you are not allowed to take care of yourself mentally. Remember Kurt Cobain? , well thank God he just killed himself, imagine if that loser had sought help and maybe made even more awesome music?.

Money = holy grail, have a gunshot wound, just stuff some coins in their, fixed!. Have incurable cancer, just pay death the toll for eternal life, duh!. Got ptsd? pfff. Just wipe your face with some good ol cash or why not, just transfer money between your own bank accounts, instant cure!.

Come on people.. do you not hear how stupid you sound?. Lets be real as well GoT dealt with a lot of heavy topics, I can only imagine if an actor had to put themselves in the mindset of being r*ped or tortured, or abused to the brink of your sanity could leave some scars. How on earth is that any weird if it might affect you in some ways?.

@roktok9002: Getting up in the morning is a choice too, even breathing is a choice. If he had a drinking problem.. are you trying to say that if you become addicted.. you should not go to rehab or seek treatment?. Like what on earth is your point?. The painfully obvious obvious connection, a lot of people drink cause of mental issues, like depression for example. If he was drinking and became addicted and couldn't stop, even more important to seek help and treatment. Considering anyway that he said this anyway

""I went through some mental health difficulties after Thrones, and during the end of Thrones, to be honest," he told Cagle. "I think it was directly due to the nature of the show and what I had been doing for years."

It sure sounds like drinking wasn't the problem and even if it was it just proves my point... so I dont get the point. Your sentence, no matter how you look at it, just says this. "Yes you are right". So ill assume that's what you meant.

@naryanrobinson: Plus the idea that this is a celebrity asking for pity is baffling. Guy answered an interview question, but that answer gets treated like he got on Twitter and volunteered all this, and nothing else, just for attention.

@mogan: yo this isnt a 'plus'. This is the most valid point in this entire comment section.

However, I think media such as GS plays a huge role in it. The way articles are read (not) makes content like this basically mean that he got on twitter and asked for pity. The popular behaviour of ppl merely reading headlines and head straight for the comment section to pour out their preconceived political convictions is something that GS very purposefully monetise.

Imagine if GS wrote a headline that reflected the actual content rather than doing everything in their power to capitalise on the ensuing conflict that they make sure to generate

@bloodbornelore: Money can definitely provide access and options, and a certain level of comfort and security as well. But mental health is not always dependent on these things and mental health issues can be a result of chemical imbalances that have nothing to do with your lifestyle.

So, money alone can't fix everything, or stop you from having a mental health issue. It can, however, provide you with a better ability to care for yourself, if your illness isn't so bad that you are incapable of identifying the need for care, which is a frequent trap of mental illness and health issues.

It's quite sad to see how bitter some people are towards those who happen to have more money than them. I'm not privvy to what conditions the actors worked under on the GoT set but a family member who works in the industry told me of their commom experiences such as 16 hour days, months of seperation from loved ones, massive pressure to get scenes right due to time constraints, constant scrutiny from the media and the expectation of adhering to a strict excercise and diet regime for several years in order to maintain the physical appearance of the character they played in a series.

When i arrive home from work at the end of the day I kiss my wife, hug my little boy and enjoy time with my family but for them they would head back to an empty apartment in a strange city to go over lines in preparation to do do it all over again the next day and this carried on for years until the show ended. The financial compensation for acting can be lucrative but it's a lonely existence.

@just_visiting: This is so true. I got started as an actor in Hollywood. I remember meeting a famous actor, and hanging out, talking about hard-boiled fiction. I went home and said "(That guy) is such a nice dude." That same night said actor went on a cocaine bender the ended with him throwing a cop down a flight of stairs. The pressure, self-doubt, isolation, and transactional relationships of the business are totally toxic.

I totally respect mental issues but an actor who can't do his job without getting crazy? He either had issues before or he is so sensitive he has to find a harmless profession.

I mean when I got out of the university I found a good job and everything was alright. Then they told me the country has gone bankrupt, I got fired and had to live on scraps for a year. I spent two months without electricity eating things I'd puke before and still wake up every morning to do anything that could get me some money. Even now I'm getting paid far less than I should. This week they decided to reduce our water supply because there is not enough. My house is atop a mountain and I don't get any. I haven't bathed since Saturday and my clothes feel like they are one with my skin. It's 36 C iside and I can't sleep, but I have to go to work tomorrow and... smell decent.

How can a guy like him with millions of dollars in his account, that allow him to get a year off to feel better, gets to whine over his job? My grandpa fought in two wars and he still had to work like a slave to feed his family because he was a refugee and they treated him like a dog, even after risking his life twice. My mother was thrown out of the university because they suspected she was a commie. My father was exiled and left to die in a forsaken island for the same reason.

OK now I'm bitching like a baby and I get it, but those people live in a different world. This dude scored the best possible role to boost his career, he met his wife there, and now he comes to tell us it was so hard he got sick? I hope he gets better.

@hosea_46 Quitting an acting job isn't as simple as giving 2 weeks notice then leaving. You sign a contract pledging your services for a period of time and if you quit, you are breaching that contract and will be sued to recover losses incurred to the production. You will most likely never work again either since you will be marked as a liability.

@hosea_46: he took a year off AFTER the show ended so never breached. Your comment suggested he should have taken a break during filming which would have had legal and financial ramifications. As for saying he should maybe stop signing contracts, well that would mean he would never work. Any job, from a multi million dollar film deal to stacking shelves in your local supermarket requires you sign a contract of employment.
