Kinect sells 2.5 million in 25 days

Microsoft says its motion-sensing system is on track to hit 5 million units sold by year's end.

Hot on the heels of Nintendo's announcement that it had sold 1.5 million units of hardware over the Black Friday/Thanksgiving weekend, Microsoft has struck back with some sales numbers of its own. Today, the software giant said that its Kinect motion-sensing system has sold 2.5 million units worldwide in its first 25 days on the market. The peripheral's milestone comes in the wake of a reported $500 million marketing campaign to promote the device.

2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.

Microsoft said the Kinect was on track to sell 5 million by year's end, in line with the company's previously announced target. The system went on sale in North America on November 4, with its European rollout occurring November 10 and its Japanese release following on November 20.

Currently, the Kinect system is offered as a stand-alone unit for $150, a hefty premium over the device's $56 estimated cost in parts. Two bundles are also available: a $300 4GB Xbox 360 package and a $400 250GB Xbox 360 loadout. All bundles also include Kinect Adventures, just one of the 17 games that were released in November.

@daviwinn I like how people call Kinect users sheep and idiots. The Kinect-hater's position seems to be that people who like what Kinect-hater doesn't like are sheep. Sure. To me, that is a stupid, uncritical way of looking at things. Plus, one gamer is not in a position to call anybody else a sheep.

Well, as long as there are idiots willing to buy something, you might as well sell it.

@RandyAU93, Yeah, I intentionally understated the importance of a healthy installed base. These sales figures are music to my ears.

im very surprised it sold that much considering the Lag me and my friends experienced with it. Lets face it, we will never see a hardcore game on this thing. I'm glad I got to play it without spending the $. Its not worth the price. The lag is more than noticeable, its laughable!

@IceJester: More users means more developers will be willing to take chances on Kinect, leading to more innovative ways of using the sensor and, hopefully, even better games than we've seen so far (yes, some are duds, but some are pretty fun, too).

Excellent. The Kinect hardware has exceeded my expectations, and its 2011 game lineup is looking nice so far. More users couldn't hurt anything.

I believe it. The technology and different types of games should improve too.
