Katamari rolls up half a million sales in Japan

Namco's snowball-effect series of games is halfway to reaching platinum in its home country.

TOKYO--Namco today announced that its Katamari Damacy series has shipped 500,000 units in Japan as of January 16. The series started in March 2004 with the original Katamari Damacy on PlayStation 2, and has since spawned a sequel as well as a PSP edition of the franchise.

Much like the behemoth conglomerations of junk players construct in the game, the original Katamari Damacy started off as a much more modest creature, selling an unimpressive 30,000 in its first few weeks of Japanese release. But while games in Japan typically get a substantial portion of their overall sales in the first few weeks of release, Katamari Damacy sales kept rolling. The game continued to receive about the same volume of orders from retailers each week, managing to move more than 100,000 copies two months later.

The steady sales prompted Namco to make a sequel, and the company released Minna Daisuki Katamari Damacy (We Love Katamari) a year later in July 2005. Boku no Watashi no Katamari Damacy (Me and My Katamari) came out for Sony's PSP in Japan just before Christmas, and it's slated for an American release in March.

good to see a game that is original (albeit most likely concieved under the influence) and fun to do well, as oposed to the games endorsed heavily by huge corporate conglomerates without an ounce of originality in it.

I'm glad that some gamers nowadays still buy games that are original and not games that have been copied about a billion times. Congratulations Namco!

Way to go guys !! Show them that different and innovative CAN be highly successful !!! And to think that EA's VP quoted Katamari Damacy as an example of an innovative game being a commercial failure... 8-|

I have both Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari and there is definately an improvement over time. We Love Kataarmi is bigger, longer, and more open than the original which is definately to the benefit of the developers. My hat is off to Namco for making a game so original. I definately hope they make a Katamari game for PS3.

500,000 for three games, one of which has been out for over 18 months... can't say I'm overly impressed. I know why they're celebrating. Non-genre games rarely sell over a 100,000 units after all. I'd be more interested to see what the sales of the original vs. the sequel are though. I know the original did over 300,000 copies, but I'm not sure on the final number. Really what matters here is the momentum of the game. How well did We Love Katamari do. If its' sales surpass the original then it's a good sign. Otherwise it's uniqueness is wearing off and it doesn't bode all that well for the series.

The japanese market are huge fans of simple, interesting looking games they can just relax and play while on a bus or when they are just relaxing during lunch and these games do that for them. Doesn't exactly need to be a killer app handhelds do well. Expect Microsoft's handheld to do extremely well over in japan. Should start hearing about the microsoft handheld around late 2006 early 2007.

I don't understand everyones love for Katamari. It's good, but it's not that good. You push a ball that picks up stuff.... to the sound of some of the most annoying music EVER!!! I'm glad you all like it, I'm just not sure why.

500,000 is impressive, hats off to Namco for taking the chance on the first one and then following thru. Gaming could use more off the wall ideas. People don't want to just play anothe clone of yet another mindless FPS. Nintendo is doing very well with their offbeat games, it would be nice of more in the industry started to notice and take heed.
