Jurassic Park User Reviews Abused

Telltale Games employees found feeding perfect 10 reviews to Metacritic without disclosing their work on the game.

Jurassic Park: The Game launched yesterday, but you won't find a review on GameSpot just yet. Part of that is because our review staff is swamped at the height of the holiday release season, and part of it is because we didn't get any early review copies from developer Telltale Games.

No Caption Provided
"This brilliant editorial deserves a 10 out of 10!"--Reader review of this article almost certainly not written by the author.

In theory, this would be an ideal reason for interested gamers to check out GameSpot's fellow CBS Interactive property Metacritic. Ordinarily, the online opinion aggregator can be counted on to compile review scores and links from a wealth of professional review sites, as well as assessments from other gamers who wrote up reviews on their own.

However, a quick examination of the Jurassic Park: The Game Metacritic page on Wednesday morning brought up a number of "Telltale" indicators that something was fishy. By mid-afternoon, Jurassic Park had no critic reviews, but it had four user reviews, each with a gushing write-up of the game's numerous virtues and a 10 out of 10 grade.

Between the reviewers' constant lionizing of Telltale Games, complete sentences, proper punctuation, and paucity of spelling errors, we began to suspect that the user reviews were not the product of actual players, but of Telltale representatives. Sure enough, a cursory Google search on the reviewers' user names backed up our suspicions. One of the reviewers was a user interface artist at Telltale; another was a cinematic artist. According to their LinkedIn profiles, both were relatively new to the studio, but they should have more than enough experience in the industry to understand this was a bad idea.

For instance, they might have seen the online outrage earlier this year when a BioWare employee gave Dragon Age II a perfect Metacritic user review score. And even if they hadn't seen that, it probably should have occurred to them at some point that Metacritic users might want to know that the guy describing the Jurassic Park game as "if Steven Spielberg decided to direct Heavy Rain" might be a little too close to the project to offer an objective assessment. The same goes for the guy who called it a "lovingly crafted game" with "top notch" writing that "truly delivers that iconic Jurassic Park vibe."

When asked about a company policy on posting user reviews without disclosure of their work on the game, a Telltale representative passed along the following statement: "Telltale Games do not censor or muzzle its employees in what they post on the internet. However, it is being communicated internally that anyone who posts in an industry forum will acknowledge that they are a Telltale employee. In this instance, two people who were proud of the game they worked on, posted positively on Metacritic under recognizable online forum and XBLA account names."

Reasonable as it is for these developers to be able to voice their own opinions, the suggestion that posting the reviews under Telltale online forum names and Xbox Live handles is somehow transparent enough is insulting. Is the average Metacritic visitor mildly curious about this new game supposed to instinctively know the forum names and online handles of every game developer for every title? Is it somehow their fault if they take a review at face value instead of Google researching every username on the site? The suggestion that their actions are acceptable because they didn't bother covering their tracks speaks more to ineptitude than virtue.

No Caption Provided
Complete sentences, proper spelling, effusive praise for the developer: the Telltale signs of bogus user reviews.

But if the goal was to drag those individuals over the coals, you'd see their names and LinkedIn profiles here. Instead, the goal is just to say in clear terms that this kind of behavior is unacceptable. Developers should have enough faith in their work to let it stand on its own merits. Proud of their work or not, the act of posting these reviews without proper disclaimer that the authors themselves worked on the title is inherently deceptive and shows a gross lack of respect for their game's potential players.

As of Thursday morning, the Xbox 360 version of Jurassic Park: The Game has just one professional review, a 55 out of 100 from Game Informer. It has a user review average of 8.2 based on six reviews, four of them perfect 10s.

lol?, wut about that Street cleaning simulator game?. Probably the entire staff who has given that one praise here on gamespot, would love to see an article about that. Cause that has to be the biggest trolling I have ever seen. lol, and would be hillarious to see how many of its good reviews was from people who worked on the game, haha.

Pfft, well I think a 10 rating alone should make people suspicious, is there anyone that actually think that games rates a 10, honestly?

@Keaze_ No. It's just a fact that that most people posting brief reviews or commenting on an article use incorrect grammar and spelling. Often times you'll find missing or extraneous punctuation. DON'T be insulted if you don't feel that comment was directed at you. DO face the fact that the comment does carry a fair amount of truth. Some examples of exactly what the author of this article was talking about can be found in comments posted by stakex007, ChubbyGomez69, cacameada, and Maxor127.

Ok this is majorly insulting. Paragraph #4. Are you calling us all illiterate? You have to be a professional reviewer to use proper punctuation and write without making spelling mistakes? What kind of argument is that?

To play Devil's advocate here, its almost impossible for a smaller company to make it in this industry nowadays. Skyrim, BF3, MW3, AC:R all have multi-million dollar budgets. How can any company hope to compete?

@Shrankenhiemer - Your casual gamer whos only slightly intrested in a game very well might just go to a site like Metacritic and check out the games score. Not to mention a well writen, non-bias user review can often be far more helpful in determining how good a game might be then a bias, and dry "professional" review. Hell, I've seen a ton of professional reviews for non-mainstream games that basically blasted the game becasue the guy writing them simply wasn't a fan of the type of game he was reviewing. On the flip side there are some high profile titles that will always be given glowing reviews.... even if its the same game year after year (COD I'm looking in your direction)So with that said, game developers shouldn't be running off and posting fake reviews of their game. Having played Jurassic Park, I can tell you thats exactlly what these were.... really fake reviews that definatlly take some liberties with how good the game actually is. Its clearly a ploy to trick people into thinking the game is better then it really is and getting them to buy it. Its under handed, and Telltale should be ashamed of themselves for it.

I don't know about you guys, but I have seen spelling errors in almost every review I have read from gamespot. The praise and high score for the game should have given it away but are we really in a world where people assume if you cant spell and write full sentences, that you are not some common gamer and instead work for a gaming company? This logic baffles me.

Free country aint it? If it was posted as a legit review from a journalist maybe, but it's a "user" review. 50% of user reviews come out months before the game by fanboys who probably won't even play it, or just out for a friendly troll

Oh, so you're whining about bias now? Super Mario 3D Land - 8 Kirby Return to Dreamland - 7.5 And how could we forget: Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - 7.5 Now let's look at the opposition. CoD: MW3 - 8.5 Dark Souls - 9.5 FIFA Soccer 12 - 9 Are the last 3 games good games? Sure. I don't care for them, specifically Call of Duty. But regardless of if they are "good" or not, it's hard to say that the game that is being called the best Zelda game of all time (you gave one of them a 10, by the way) by almost everyone who reviews it and is getting tons of perfect scores is considered decent by you guys. I honestly am not the biggest Nintendo fan, and I doubt I'll get any three of those games. But it's not a closely guarded secret that those games are getting great reviews. Even IGN gave Zelda a 10 and Mario a 9.5.

Remember when all the non sell outs quit your crappy site? You fired Jeff Gerstmann because he didn't write a ravishing review for a developer that was giving you lots of money. Hypocrites. You have no room to talk about biased reviews.

Who cares. Game reviews are always a little padded and bias. All a review is, is a persons interpretation of a piece of software. Even Gamespot reviewers are bias, but that's just how reviews are, professional or user.

I don't think there is anything wrong with someone being proud enough of their work to post positively about it without intentional deception, which there was none as far as I know. If the game were sh*t and they posted rave reviews knowing that, they would be discrediting themselves. I admire the employees for sticking their neck out in an attempt to garner attention for a piece of work they are proud of. In a market this competitive and during the holiday season, smaller titles need all the help they can get. Now if the game is sh*t, well then....

Is anyone really surprised? I've worked in the industry for 10 years, at different companies... I can tell you Telltale's employees are not alone as this kind of behaviour happens all the time. Now, I'm not saying I approve of this but the outrage expressed in this article is somewhat amusing in a naive sort of way.

They shouldn't have done it and it is wrong but I would also like to add that Gamespot's articles are normally a lot more 'objective' than this. He makes it sound like a personal insult or a blog post..
