Japanese publishers cancel, delay games after quake

Online play temporarily halted for Metal Gear Online, Final Fantasy XI and XIV; Japanese debut of MotorStorm 3, Yakuza: Of the End bumped; Disaster Report 4 canned.

Many game publishers have opted to err on the side of caution following the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami that caused massive destruction in Northern Japan last week. With that portion of the country reeling from devastation, game makers that include Square Enix, Konami, Sony, Sega, Capcom, and Irem have announced game cancellations, delays, or service outages inside and outside of Japan.

Final Fantasy XIV players will receive a free month of play.
Final Fantasy XIV players will receive a free month of play.

As the earthquake has impacted Japan's energy production, Square Enix said that beginning yesterday, it has taken its massively multiplayer online role-playing games Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV, as well as PlayOnline, offline for at least a week. The publisher apologized for the service disruption on its official forums and said that subscribers to these services would not be billed for the month of April.

Konami announced a similar move for Metal Gear Online. Through its Facebook page, the publisher said that MGS Online was being shut down until further notice so as to conserve energy in Japan. The publisher said that gamers can keep abreast of when the game will be brought back online through its official website.

As for game updates for Japan alone, Andria Sang reports that Irem outright canceled Disaster Report 4, which was due for release on the PlayStation 3 this spring. Though the developer reportedly offered no explanation for the cancellation, it likely stemmed from the game's premise, which was to escape a city that had been wrecked by an earthquake.

Game delays were more prevalent. Andria Sang also reported that Sony has pushed back MotorStorm: Apocalypse in Japan, a game that had been set for release in the region on March 17. Whereas previous installments in the series presented eye-catching natural environments, MotorStorm: Apocalypse is set in an earthquake-ravaged metropolis inspired by the US Pacific coast, specifically the San Francisco Bay Area.

Furthermore, the Japan-centric gaming site reported that Sega has delayed the release of Yakuza: Of the End, which had been slated to arrive in Japan later this week. The game also presented a departure for the series, with this installment in the underground crime drama franchise focusing on a town that has been ravaged by zombies.

Capcom also said that it has delayed the release of downloadable content for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 in Japan. Previously slated for release this week, the add-on would have introduced Resident Evil's Jill Valentine as well as Shuma-Gorath into the cross-over fighter.

@GunBladeHero, I dont think is the end of the world, but we must remember and know about Scalar weapows, they can move the nature, they say that Haiti was made as a test for other similar eletromagnetic weapown called Haarp, a less powerfull than Scalar ones, that for coincidence China have.

Hope Japan recovery soon from this tragedy. Games are secondary for now, by the way, a Yakuza game with zombies? For me this one can be delayed for ever.

I grown pretty fond of that country over the years. Through anime and video games I gained an appreciation for the culture. It's hard for me to watch the videos and hear the stories coming out of Japan after the quake, and I'm a pretty heartless bastard. I've never donated to anything before, but I will to help out in any way I can. Prayer is not enough.

I will pray for Japan to be protected Inshallah. But i think it is not good to joke about these disasters even after many years or decades. Death is not something funny, and as for the delays i dont care because saving peoples lives is much more important than games.

As soon as I heard about the quake I started to wonder when this news would come. My thoughts are with those affected and I don't believe there would be too many callous enough to be upset about a delay of game or temporarily offline when so many people have lost everything and everyone they loved. I continue to wish for a quick recovery for the people of Japan and everywhere else this disaster has reached.

Terrible, terrible destruction and tragedy. My thoughts have been and continue to be with those who lost family members... homes... all their possessions... their businesses. In my 37 years, I'm not sure I've ever seen something so tragic on such a large level. Even "getting back to business" is the least of most of their concerns right now. Most are just looking for a meal and warmth.

They are making bowls , chopstics and cups out of bamboo. Great people. If that was America we would be using plastic cups , with plastic spoons. Never knew that they would take this so calmly. In the U.S you would see on the news crying , but the Japanese are taking it like it is another day. Bless the Japanese.

Maybe I'm being a little insensitive and I just want to make clear that I am very sympathetic to those that have suffered in Japan but is it really necessary to go as far as to cancel games that feature natural disasters? I understand perhaps delaying them out of respect but the fact is earthquakes are something people have to live with, Japan is going to suffer again in the future and the Japanese all know it. I really don't see how fictional piece of media is going to upset anyone that badly.

Obviously the japanese side of all media forms would be affected by this and rightly so. Games and entertainment should be the last thing on the japanese people's minds. I do sincerely hope that they can recover for this and my heart goes out to those who lost people dear to them and for those people who probably now feel scared, confused, and lost.

@GunBladeHero "Nobody believes me when I say the World is ending" Perhaps a message board on a gaming website isn't the place for a prophet, I find they get more credit and recognition by shouting out on street corners.

I really feel bad for the entire country of Japan and anyone living there, having to go through such a terrible natural disaster. As far as delays and cancellations, its really a non-issue to me. Everyone needs to focus on saving lives there and rebuilding. It makes you realize not to take life for granted. It could not imagine what some people are going through there.

Konami to shut off it's servers to conserve power for Japan. Thats true national identity there. Doing something for the good of their country. I hope they recover soon and manage to put this all as far behind them as they possible can. God bless Japan.
