James Bond Movie Studio MGM Exploring Sale

If a sale goes through, watching MGM's films and TV properties could get much easier.

MGM Holdings, the studio behind the James Bond franchise, is reportedly exploring a sale. Variety, citing "a source close to the situation" says the company is specifically eyeing streaming services or other film companies looking to establish their streaming sectors. Based on privately traded shares, the company has a market value of $5.5 billion, including debt.

In addition to James Bond, MGM's film library has more than 4,000 titles and 17,000 hours of television programming, including film franchises like Rocky and The Hobbit as well as television shows like The Handmaid's Tale and Vikings.

MGM has not yet commented publicly on the trial balloon signs pointing to a sale--the Wall Street Journal first reported recently that MGM had engaged Morgan Stanley and LionTree Advisors to begin the formal sale process.

However, a sale would not be a total shock as COVID-19 has effectively kneecapped smaller players (like MGM) who are unable to release their releases in theaters. While MGM is much bigger than just James Bond, one need only look to that franchise to gain an insight into what might be happening at the studio: No Time To Die, the upcoming 007 flick, has gone from a November 2019 scheduled release date to enduring several releases before (for now) seemingly holding firm to an April 2, 2021 release. James Bond is just one of many properties MGM owns, but given the recently announced James Bond 007 video game, there's still plenty of gas left in the studio's tank and strong interest in its franchises.

James Bond is cool and all, but for me their biggest property is Stargate. That's a franchise that needs some love by the right people.

Would be a good fit for Amazon Prime or HBO Max. Amazon Prime already has a big presence in the UK.

@rodoxthedark: You forgot the endless stream of jokes, and an interconnecting plot that's either god-tier genius, or Satan’s ass grease levels of retarded.

I heard Tencent is going to buy them out. They will change James Bond to James Wong and his code name is 008.

However Boris Johnson is killing the deal on the grounds of “national security.”

I’m joking...

Apple should buy them, they need more content on their streaming service and this is a good opportunity.

That reminds me.

So when are we going to get another 007 game for current-gen consoles? 007 used to be like the call of duty of console shooters. Nowadays, you would be lucky to find a single reference to those games by anybody or anything.

I thought that Sony used to own them, or someone else? I thought they kept changing hands. Ah well, Sony might as well buy them. If I had the money - I would.

@returnofthebrotha: Both Sony and Comcast were members of the consortium that bought MGM back in the mid-'00s, but both left the ownership group when MGM restructured in bankruptcy around 2010. MGM's now owned by a bunch of investment groups.

Chinese will probably buy it like they did AMC/Carmike theaters, Dick Clarke productions and Legendary Entertainment.

@styymy: The sale of Dick Clark Productions to Wanda (the Chinese group that is also the majority owner of AMC and Legendary) fell through. It's owned by media company MRC.

@styymy: I don't think they a government would allow the Chinese to own this. The Japanese (Sony) owning pictures is one thing since they NEEDED it to Trojan Horse their tech (Blu-Ray) to success, and they could safeguard the archives. The Chinese may act in a different way and would never give it up once they obtained it. They may have cultural blackmail with it. I'm just glad that my Shaft (originals) movies got released on blu-ray...

Ugh. Get ready for a plethora of mediocre feature films and spin offs of IP's so whoever buys it can quickly recoup the cost of the purchase. Kind of like the trainwreck that was the last 3 entries of The Skywalker Saga. At least Rogue One was good.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Hopefully NOT Disney. MGM was once owned by Warner, than changed hands to Fox (pre Disnazi) then to Sony. I've read Universal is eyeing it as is Warner again now that they have a huge deal with HBO. I'd prefer ANYONE nearly to Disney

@march202002: Neither Warner Bros. nor Fox owned MGM. They were merely the distributors for MGM Home Entertainment's video releases.

I've read that Apple is one of the current favorites to buy MGM's library. Warner Bros. is very likely a no-go as AT&T is buried under a mountain of debt and can't get much of a bite on selling DirecTV.
