Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier Hands-On

We brave the heat and take to the skies in this portable adventure.

Developer High Impact Games has made a name for itself by successfully bringing the Ratchet and Clank series to the PSP. Now the company has turned its attention to another classic PlayStation 2 duo. We had a chance to get our hands on a few levels in Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier, the latest portable adventure for these venerable stars.

Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier plays a lot more like the original game in the franchise, The Precursory Legacy, than its sprawling sequels. The emphasis is on solving jumping problems rather than fighting enemies, although there are still baddies populating the world. The first level that we played took place underground, where steaming lava pits made for a rather unpleasant atmosphere.

Jak has a couple of eco-fueled moves that let him perform superhuman feats. When standing on a gas vent, he can use his rocket jump to reach higher platforms. There are also rock piles in strategically placed sections. When standing on top of them, you can use your eco-construct move, which causes platforms to rise out of the ocean, creating a safe passage for Jak. You select these different powers by cycling through them with the D pad, which can be clunky during action sequences, but works well enough when enemies aren't swarming.

No Caption Provided

The combat is very limited in the lava level, but there are a few times in which you'll have to get your hands dirty. You can fire at foes with your gun, which is easy enough to do but lacks impact. It takes an awful of ammo to make a lava beast die. You can also pull off a dash charge or spinning roundhouse, which can take out more than one enemy at once. Combat is clearly not the emphasis of The Lost Frontier, given that most of the lava level had us climbing up tall platforms and swinging on rails.

The other level that we checked out had you flying around in a fancy aircraft. It wasn't as fancy as the gargantuan one that we had to take down, though. Here, we had machine guns and powerful missile launchers, and it was easy enough to target the weak points and blow it up. By tapping the D pad, we could pull off a fancy loop-the-loop, which made it fun to evade flying enemies.

The Lost Frontier is scheduled to come out later this year for both the PSP and PS2.

By the way, does anybody know the control scheme for the psp version? I would like to know. Even though I'm getting the ps2 version first, I may need to check out the psp version, and I hope it has good controls.

I desperately hope that this game won't suffer from the generic list of PSP game problems. (long loading times, horrible camera angle, and short campaign mode). I also disagree with martinion1. I'm pretty sure it's just for ps2 and psp.

I read some thing about how the gun staff works, like you put different eco amounts in for different gun modes. But maybe I'm wrong idk, game looks amazing even if there is "limited" combat. The thing that got me hooked on the series was the fact that it was made up of half ratchet/half prince of Persia (kinda).

Dr-Ignorhattan "plays a lot more like the original game in the franchise, The Precursory Legacy, than its sprawling sequels." How about next time you read at least few first sentences in a preview before posting just for sake of saying something?

I'll probably get this for the PS2, even though I also have a PSP. I just hope that the lava level was the only one that played like the original Jak and Daxter. I DID like the first one, but Jak 2 and 3 had a lot more action. All in all, from the trailer and screenshots, I think I need to hear more before I jump to a conclusion. And the fact that Naughty Dog dropped the series was a big dissapointment to me.

This does look more like Daxter than the PS2 Trilogy, thats not a totally bad thing, but its not the return I wanted for the franchise, Sony obviously don't see this as important anymore, deciding to focus on the (inferior IMO) Ratchet & Clank series.

Sad that it ain't coming out for PS3 and is not gonna be like Jak 3(one of my favs games) but more level based. Oh well, it could be good for my PSP. Anyways I just hope ND makes a Jak game for PS3 that's Jak 3 style and has even more stuff next year.

the reason why this isn't on the PS3 is basically because Naughty Dog is already at work on a PS3 game (Uncharted 2). If you want Jak on the PS3, that would mean that the developers would have to stop and delay Uncharted 2 to early 2010 just to get working on the Jak game. Naughty Dog said that themselves.

I hope there isn't too much of an emphasis on collecting objectives like Daxter. The fact that they announce it as a pure platformer rather than an open ended action adventurelike Jak 3 doesn't bode too well. And I'm none too happy that it comes to the PS2 either. Why did I buy a PSP for then? Keep the next MotorStorm and Jak on the PSP.

it's waaay too late to making a Jak game on te ps2 at this point. The platform is a year from death. I have no idea why they wouldn't move thise series to the PS3 by now. what's up with that?

Sad to say, I did not experience any of the Jak & Daxter games. On one note though, when I opened the webpage of this game, I was taken aback by the rather unsightly choices of games under the "Games You May Like..." tab. I don't believe Jak & Daxter would be related to such crap like "Finder Love" or the To Love Ru anime right?
