It Took Almost 3 Years, But Starbound Is Leaving Early Access

Chucklefish promises more content will continue to be released even after launch.

After roughly five years of development, almost three of which were spent in Early Access on Steam, Starbound is ready to be officially released.

Developer Chucklefish has announced Starbound will launch on July 22. It's been available for purchase through Steam Early Access since December 2013. Even in the wake of its initial release, it was an impressive game, as our 2014 Early Access review notes. It's only gotten better with time as new features have been added, and more are coming with the 1.0 release like an expanded questing system and the ability to recruit NPCs as crew members for your ship.

No Caption Provided

Chucklefish doesn't intend to stop expanding and improving the game once it's out of Early Access, either. "While Starbound will be finished in two weeks, this isn't the end," a message from the developer reads. "We will continue to update and support Starbound for as long as we can. We've got loads of cool ideas we couldn't fit into 1.0 but hope to put into future updates."

There's no word yet on what those ideas are, but we'll report back with any interesting new developments to the game.

Starbound, which plays a bit like a 2D Minecraft where you have a spaceship that lets you explore different planets, is still available for purchase now on Steam for $15. There's also a four-pack for $45 if you want to try to lure in friends for some co-op action.

Oh no... that's the same day I'm getting Monster Hunter Generations... oh darn. I guess I'll just let 1.0 sit for a while in my library. It's not like there's any anticipation left for it now anyway.

Really enjoyed this game back when first released, but I lost all my interest after all the dev/community drama and the lack of a single game update for 6 months to a year. When the big patch finally hit (1.0 i think), i quit after about 30 minutes of play, they changed too much all at once. they killed the food/healing sys, removed pickaxes (and drills?) and opted to focus on the antimatter gun (cant remember if this is the name anymore) to break blocks. This taught me a valuable lesson concerning early access games, to be weary of games that potentially have a long dev cycle ahead of them, things can radically change down the road.

I loved Starbound. The recent changes they made in the past few months made it strangely less enjoyable for me. Oh well. I'm glad to read that they continuing the updates. Crossing fingers for a more awesome game with updates!

I used to be obsessed with this game, I think it was just that minimal bit of lore you find(Such as bits and pieces of info plus what you observe) and the exploration. It just had calm feel where nothing mattered and you can just do whatever like in MC(Until the fandom picked up and associations were made with it). Though the long dev period just killed my interest in this game.

I have often brought up this game when discussing No Man's Sky and for some similar features I'd say that NMS is going to beat them to market, then I see Starbound is finally releasing and before NMS :). From a lot of the comments here though, the game has drastically changed for worse.

Too bad this game was ruined after the questing/tutorial update.

@jaoman9: Can you elaborate? I played it a bit but it's been years and I wonder what changed.

@katerinafm: They added a long boring tutorial you can no longer find coal and start exploring the universe right away anymore. there are more crappy things but that was my biggest problem when trying to get back into the game.

People who played this hate Chucklefish and think the game is unsalvagable at this point.

@Ripper_TV: What happened? I played it for a bit but it was a long time ago, this sounded like good news but now I see yours and another comment that they somehow messed up the game at some point.

Updates don't always mean a game gets better. You say it's only gotten better with time, but I don't think that's true for a large group of people. They changed directions and lost there objective, taking out survival systems, and the awesome randomized planets and biomes. No more freaky eyeball trees or unique monsters. Also heard that village and dungeon spawn was ramped up, to the point they become boring and repetitious, not something rare and cool to find.

@drnatedogg: Yeah agreed. Just because it's a update doesn't mean it's better stuff.

@hystavito: As long as they continue to make progress with it I'm cool. Zomboid is a great game, but I would love for them to be able to finish it one day. Damn survivor AI.
