Is This A Golden Age For Capcom? | Spot On

The 41 year-old company is on a roll and we can't help but wonder what's next.

About 10 to 15 years ago, Capcom entered a lull. Resident Evil 6 was critically panned, Lost Planet 3 was released to largely negative reviews, and as a result, the studio's reputation took a small hit. Recently, however, things have changed.

With well received Resident Evil remakes, strong numbers on Street Fighter and Monster Hunter, and success with rolling the dice on new ideas like Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, Capcom is undeniably having a moment. And, with a plethora of new titles on the way such as the highly anticipated Monster Hunter Wilds, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, and Resident Evil 9, we don't see the publisher's winning streak ending anytime soon.

This week on Spot On, Tam and Lucy shower some much deserved praise on the iconic studio and discuss what they hope to see from it in the future. Will we get another Marvel vs. Capcom? Can the publisher find a way to make mobile games work for them? Let's chat about it.

Spot On is GameSpot's weekly news show in which managing editor Tamoor Hussain and senior producer Lucy James talk about the latest game news. Given the massive video game industry's highly dynamic and never-ending news cycle, there's always something to talk about. Unlike most news shows, Spot On will dive deep into a single topic instead of recapping all the news. Spot On airs each Friday.

I mean yeah it is.

Capcom is the only AAA game dev this gen that I can think of that has been consistently making games that feel full and thought-out. Like back in the PS3, and PS2 era, across all IPs.

I can honest to god trust Capcom more than any other dev that makes games for all platforms.

No, their golden era was the arcades. They may have hits but they don't much of anything past Resident Evil, Street Fighter and Monster Hunter these days. They take much less risks.

2010's Capcom may have been a mess but at least they tried new stuff such as lost planet, Asura's Wrath and Dead Rising. Stagnation isn't a good thing.

@if_master_1: I was thinking the exact same thing.

Their golden age was back in the "1942", "Commando", "Ghosts n' Goblins", "Dragon's Lair" days.

@if_master_1: They certainly use to make more games. Thanks to games costing less and requiring less staff on each project, however find you're wrong on a few fronts.

Capcom use to make more Resident Evils than it does today, and Monster Hunter has had an average of four games each generation since 2004. For context World and Rise are Gen5 MH games & we have two games and two expansions.

Then let's note on "stagnation" are you telling me the only Capcom games you've been willing to buy and play are: Shinsekai, Teppen, Toraware no Palm, Black Command, Kunitsu-Gami & Exoprimal. All in the 2020's & new IPs for Capcom.

If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, you'll know what their golden age was.

@mikemaj82: It's why having younger people commenting on the gaming industry is sort of cringe for us old folk.

Definitely, great era for Capcom and it’s gonna keep getting better with the new MH.

Capcom and Square Enix are the only game companies you can still trust anymore, along with maybe Rockstar and Naughty Dog
