Insomniac not signed on for Resistance 4
Studio creative director Marcus Smith says sci-fi shooter series could be handed off like Spyro franchise, company ready to branch out.
Insomniac Games is slated to deliver the final chapter in its Resistance trilogy on September 6 with the release of Resistance 3. And if a Resistance 4 is on Sony's docket, as of yet, Insomniac isn't signed on to make it, according to studio creative director Marcus Smith.

Asked by Gaming Union whether the Resistance franchise will remain Insomniac's flagship franchise going forward, Smith demurred, saying that the studio has a number of other franchises it is currently pursuing and the alternate-history sci-fi shooter isn't one of them.
"As far as Resistance being the flagship, I think Insomniac has always branched out," Smith said. "I loved the Spyro the Dragon series when [Insomniac] did that. I didn't work there at the time, and I was bummed when they didn't work on the fourth game, but ultimately, I think it was healthy for them to move on. I think that's what we're seeing here."
"We've done Resistance 3 and we're really into it and proud of it, but we're not currently slated to do a Resistance 4," he continued. "So it would be hard to say it's any kind of lynchpin within Insomniac. I think we're thriving and branching out in a lot of different directions."
Smith also bought up the fact that Nihlistic is at work on Resistance: Burning Skies (the series' first installment on the PlayStation Vita), while Sony Bend handled the well-regarded Resistance: Retribution on the PSP from 2009. Insomniac is currently working on a new installment in the Ratchet & Clank franchise, as well as the multiplatform co-op shooter, Overstrike.
"We've got a lot of different places for the universe to go, so I could certainly see the series going to another developer," he said. "I'm sure Sony would want to find a high-caliber developer to do a good offering. I don't think they'd hand the franchise over to somebody who is going to screw it up."
