Infamous: Second Son/First Light PS4 Pro Enhancements Detailed

"The powers look amazing" on a PS4 Pro, Sucker Punch says.

With the PlayStation 4 Pro set to come out in just a few days, we now know more about what Infamous: Second Son and First Light players can expect from the new console.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Jason Connell of developer Sucker Punch said the game benefits from the PS4 Pro in a number of ways, one of which is HDR support. If you have an HDR-ready TV and a PS4 Pro, you'll get even more realistic-looking lighting and exposure effects, Connell said.

No Caption Provided

"We wanted the art direction and tech to reflect realism in a way that immerses players in the damp, rainy streets of Seattle," he explained. "We did a lot of work to ensure our sky, sun, and light sources felt like the real thing. So why is HDR such a big deal now? This patch, along with an HDR capable TV, pushes those crazy bright values even further.

"Yes, that means looking at the sun or sky in our game feels extremely bright, providing a level of contrast I've never seen in our game before," he added. "The vibrancy of the sky and lighting creates some really striking and beautiful moments. Furthermore, this particular feature will work on the standard PS4 as long as you have an HDR capable TV."

Additionally, for both Second Son and First Light, the resolution is increased and should make game world elements like signs, coffee cups, puddles, and leaves look "even more crisp."

"You can see detail on bricks and signs that previously went unnoticed. When we created the Seattle landscape, we had a goal to make everything wet," Connell said. "That means reflections of those details on every surface. It also meant a fair amount of specular aliasing. The increased resolution improves this and many other alias issues. And if you don’t have a 4K TV, you’ll still see a smoother image as the PS4 Pro will scale down to match your 1080p display."

Third, Connell said the superpowers that Delsin wields in Second Son and Fetch in First Light are improved, so much so that it even surprised the developer.

"The powers look amazing. Delsin's smoke powers and Fetch's neon powers are particularly impressive," Connell said. "Watching the original effects now in 4K and HDR, I notice details I didn't even know existed. For example, when Fetch does a ground pound, waves of brilliantly flickering particles erupt in all directions. We even improved photo-mode to let you pause on powers. My favorite is winding up Fetch's ultimate neon bomb and then quickly activating photo mode to pause and observe the thousands of emissive particles bits forming around her."

The $400 PS4 Pro, which features a replaceable 1 TB hard drive, launches on November 10. For lots more on the console, check out GameSpot's roundup of everything you need to know.

Second Son/First Light were already patched to support PS4 Pro. They're not the only games getting PS4 Pro updates, as numerous others that have or will get updates include Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Modern Warfare Remastered, and Horizon: Zero Dawn, among many others. Check out GameSpot's roundup to see all the games that are getting PS4 Pro patches.

I just wish they'd make a full game with Fetch. Now not saying First Light wasn't a heck of a pre-quell to Second Son, and was quite long being what it was. but Fetch would have made a better main character than Delsin. they could have called it Second Daughter? lol.

@darthtimmy:

Have you played this game? I tested it today, it actually can do 60 fps, especially in 1080p

The game has number of setting, Locked 30fps and Unlocked FPS

High Graphics or High Framerate

So if you choose both Unlocked FPS and high framerate, you'll get your 1080/60

http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-usage/hdr-gaming/best is a fantastic list of great TVs for HDR gaming. It's very confusing right now and it needs a year or two to make sense to a casual customer. Hopefully Gamespot doesn't take down links. This site is the most unbiased site for reviews of TVs. I own the 65" Samsung K8000 series and couldn't be happier.

@lonesamurai1: You are wrong of course.

People that have 4K TV want something to showcase the TV, they dont want to play upscaled games.

Checherboarding is NOT simple upscaling like every console does, its done in the rendered pipeline and looks great, I guarantee you that people that dont know what to look for will never see a difference between native and Checkerboarding.

To make you happy, most games on PS4Pro do offer unlocked or 60fps modes for 1080p resolutions

This game for example has either locked 30fps or unlocked fps, than another option High graphics (4K) or High Framerate (1080p) so if you choose both 1080p and unlocked FPS youll have 60

Rise of the tomb Raider also has two 1080p mode, 60fps or 30fps with ultra graphics (graphics better than in 4K mode)

@Benny_a: On point again. lonesamurai1 is just another PC gamer snob thinking PCs are the only way to go 4K. And even the 1080p can do 60fps with no drops. This game in particular I played it to full completion when it first came out. And now that I have a Sony 800d 4K HDR this game looks almost like a different game. It is incredible!

Knew they won't do 60fps... leave 4K and that upscaled bs alone! or at least give players the option to run games at 1080p 60fps with some anti aliasing. Can already see the news about the Scorpio having issues running real 4K. These companies really need to focus on giving players a smoother gaming experience and less about resolution and graphics that even high end PCs have problems running.

@eli150: It's not a competitive online game nor a combo-fighting game like DMC, as long as it has a stable framrate it'll be fine and look great.

1080p!!! !1080P!!! 1080P!!!!!! That's what it was all about a year + ago... Now they will hype this HDR and a few other things to us, especially the media. Watch games get newer versions like Uncharted 1 to 4 pro edition... Gaming is like movies now, almost no point buying games, they will come out with a better version again and again. I hope I'm wrong, but, I wasn't year's ago when I mentioned this.

Games on pc's age well and these consoles are basically cheap pc's now. I really hope if there's a Ps5... soon enough, it will use the same architect and let us play ps4 games easily, just like pc, I'm able to play games from 1990's+

@oasisbeyond77: No point in buying games because a better looking version might come out in 5 years? You have a stupid way of looking at things.

@oasisbeyond77: Errr this is not about a better looking version being released, but a patch. As for the games being from the 90s that can be played on PC, they were patched when re-released on Steam (or fan-made patches). I have a few games that work well on Windows 95, 98, but not XP (and after) for example.

Hexplore wouldn't stop crashing on XP, and the PC wasn't even that different compared to the ones having Windows 95 or 98. I tweaked the options available, but none of them worked. After a while, games will stop working with newer OS, so you'll have to keep your older PCs at some point, or buy them digitally so the developers release patches for them.

In short, games getting patched are already "Pro" edition. So unless they re-release games to be exclusive for the PS4 Pro, this won't happen. Heck, even Sony said there wouldn't be PS4 Pro exclusives.

What's amazing is the lack of clear standard when it comes to HDR.

@siarhei

There is a clear standard since 2016, its called 'Ultra HD Premium', every new TV that has such sticker/label is compatible with the HDR standard.

Every TV that has Ultra HD premium sticker will work with PS4, X1S, PS4 Pro, PC and whatever comes in the future.

Also with every 4K bluray that has HDR support.

Thats it, very simple.

@siarhei: you need to heavily research this and make sure to read about any TV before you buy. As you said, many use marketing phrases like High Dynamic Range and Wide Color Range support etc... It needs to be specificaly HDR10 certified.

So far I've seen Sony TVs specifically tagged "4K HDR" in gold and these are the real thing.

@siarhei: Its not confusing, its actually VERY simple, look for Ultra HD Premium Label/Sticker.

Thats the HDR standard used in games and bluray, the ONLY standard

@siarhei: Put it this way a few back Dolby , everyone else backs HDR 10 :) . It will be like HD HDVD vs Bluray. Even the movies that have Dolby Vision also support HDR10.

@deviltaz35: Makes it hard when you go to a retailer to buy a new TV and you ask them if it is HDR10. They say yes it has HDR, only to find out it is HDR but not HDR10. Should have known since the Hisense TV was cheap. At least I was able to return it after a bit of fuss.
Now I'm still looking.

@digitm64: NO, what you need to look for is Ultra HD Premium label, thats it.

If its has no such sticker on TV/Box than google it.

@asherffius: I am in Australia though so rather pricey to have stuff shipped from os. I have a good relationship with a department store though they have invited me to staff only night this week so i must spend too much lol.

I have a 65 inch i think you call it 930D over there here it is known as 9300D but same tv.

3D seems to have been improved a bit since it was first released too. Was watching Finding Dory last night and although not perfect it was completely watchable. I only had to adjust it once or twice for depth throughout the movie.

Overall it is a really good tv, i love the vibrant colours and it seems a great fit for the PS4 Pro.

@deviltaz35: Wow 65" nice. I actually first got a LG 49" 4K HDR on sale at Best Buy here in Texas. BAD MISTAKE! I don't watch any TV in my room just my PS 4 Pro. And when I set it all up and turned on my PS 4 Pro (which worked perfectly on my old 1080p VIZIO) I got sound and no picture. After 3 hours on the phone with an LG call center that was in India trouble shooting the problem they said they'll have to have their techies research the problem and call me back. I called PlayStation and in less than 3 minutes I was talking to a associate in Seattle and he said "Ah yes, It a known firmware issue with ALL LG tvs." And told me how to fix it. Basically by turning off everything I bought the TV for. So DO NOT get LG for you PlayStation 4 Pro. LG told me they MAY be able to send out a firmware update sometime in January. MAYBE! lol. Suffice it to say I'm taking it back tomorrow.

@deviltaz35: I know right I was shocked! As it is a big name brand not some unheard of knock-off. Live and learn. My father and me were both wondering what the catch was when I was able to get a 49" 4K HDR tv for $400US. And I found it. Now the picture if you watched like YouTube thru the tv's app or a Blu-ray the picture was incredible. But seeing as My only Blu-ray play was the PS4 then the PS4 Pro there's the catch! So just FYI and spread the word. :-)

@asherffius: Thanks , will do , sorry you are going through that. There is nothing worse than getting something like that new and having issues whilst trying to use it for something basic like a console.

Seems a bit like PS Pro framerates right now , hit and miss with Sony looking into it.
