Indiana Jones 5 Gets First Image, June 2023 Release Date

Star Wars Celebration gave us a look at Harrison Ford back in his Indy costume.

Indiana Jones 5 is right around the corner. During the Lucasfilm panel at Star Wars Celebration, it was revealed the movie will hit theaters on June 30, 2023. And while that's more than a year from now, fans were teased with a first look at Harrison Ford in his iconic Indy outfit.

It's been 41 years since Harrison Ford debuted as Dr. Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and while there isn't a lot known about the fifth installment in this beloved franchise, Harrison Ford and director James Mangold (Logan) appeared at the panel to promote the movie. Of course, people in attendance lost their minds.

"I am really proud of the movie we made," Ford said. "So I'll be seeing you around campus."

The last Indy movie to hit theaters was none other than 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. While the movie didn't move most people as much as the original films, it grossed $790 million worldwide in the box office. The film scored a 65 on Metracritic, based on 40 reviews.

Much of Ford's time during the panel was spent congratulating composer John Williams on his 90th birthday, to which the crowd sang "Happy Birthday" to him. "We all know about what John does musically," Ford said to the crowd. "What you may not know and what I have come to appreciate is the warmth, generosity, and the boyish spirit of this man."

In addition to the Indy 5 news, there was a trailer for Willow, a trailer for the Star Wars Andor series, and a sneak peek at Season 3 of Mandalorian.

I hope they don't pull they usual Hollywood trope of killing off a character in his final film. Let Indy have a happy retirement.

I'm in the minority. I didn't think Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was that bad.

I enjoyed the addition of Shia Lebouf as Mutt Williams. Cate Blanchet was pretty good as the Russian operative. John Hurt was a great Ox and Winstone as Mac was fantastic.

I enjoyed it throughout until they entered the obelisk. From there, it went downhill and was pretty disappointing. The Aliens at the end were, well, anticlimactic.

@dirtydyk: I like Crystal Skull. I think it's at least as good as any of the other films in the franchise.

@grimhope: Aren't you a ray of sunshine. Perhaps you should heed the advice of the late Roger Ebert: "Movies are so rarely great art, that if you can't enjoy great trash, then there's no reason to go."

@grimhope: No, it was not nearly as good as the other ones. LC was as good as it gets.

@dirtydyk: I really liked seeing Harrison Ford and Karen Allen on screen together again. I would have like it more if the movie wasn’t such a CGI sideshow. Film the actors in natural settings with natural chemistry, and leave the cartoony stuff out of it. I loved Raider of the Lost Ark as a kid and I never needed CGI prairie dogs and silly gags to draw me in. That’s why I ignore all but two Indiana Jones movies.

@theStrict9: I see it differently. And this is just my opinion.

The CGI animals, like the monkeys and the Prairie dogs, set the stage for what's next, which is the huge killer ants. It suggests the Aliens had a bigger impact in the environment than just ruling over the tribes. It fits the story.

Raiders is from 1981. Even if they wanted CGI, it wouldn't look much better than the ghosts flying out of Pandora's box. Temple of Doom had an impossible mine cart ride and possessions by drinking Cult Blood. Last Crusade takes out a war plane with seagulls.

Crystal Skull is not the first to use "unbelievable" stuff.

In the end, I enjoyed them all and at least once a year, i pop them in Kaleidescape and watch an Indy marathon with the family.

@theStrict9: If the "every other" trend continues, this one might actually be decent. I'm tentatively hopeful that Mangold can give us something good. He delivered with Logan, after all, which had to deal with similar issues in terms of trying to keep things grounded while dealing with an aging cast.
