Barron's names Iwata one of top 30 CEOs

Financial magazine recognizes Nintendo chief as one of the world's best; company resurgence, stock price increase cited as reasons.

The resurgence of Nintendo as a force to be reckoned with in gaming can largely be attributed to the decisions made at the top. While creative guru Shigeru Miyamoto certainly deserves a lot of credit for the turnaround, it was Nintendo CEO, Satoru Iwata, who was instrumental in the company's new direction, focusing on the mass market with the "Touch Generation" line of games and hardware.

Financial magazine Barron's has taken note of Nintendo's rising stock and named Iwata one of its top 30 CEOs in the world, putting the 47-year-old on par with Apple's Steve Jobs, News Corp.'s Rupert Murdoch, and Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett. The list is not ranked.

To be considered for Barron's list, CEOs had to be in their post for at least three years (Iwata became Nintendo's CEO in 2002). The magazine touts the "strikingly innovative" Wii and Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day as reasons for Nintendo's 82.5 percent rise in stock over the last year and quotes Iwata as saying, "We are not fighting against other companies--we are fighting against ignorance of video games."

I wish I had a lot of Nintendo stock before the DS became so popular. Also, Fil0403, you need to read more carefully - the journalist attributed the turnaround to the "Touch Generation" line of games and hardware, which started with the DS years ago.

Turnaround? Did these people gone mad? Crazy? The Wii is on the market for less than 6 months and it's not even the leader. I'll love to see what these people say in 3 years, when the hype has gone down, games stopped releasing and the Wii is the least sold console of the 3, LOL.

That's some illustrious company for Iwata to be in. NIntendo certainly deserves praise for their amazing (and almost overnight) reversal of fortunates. The DS and the Wii are forces to be reckoned with in our industry.

They took a calculated risk, and it paid off big time. Good on Nintendo. Now, if they can just figure out how to get production levels up enough to meet demand...

cancer_777 Nintendo can do what Microsoft is doing, lose money in the beggining and then gradually gain profit. They can use there DS sales money, woudn't you agree?(100 million profit)

Nintendo. Forever synonymous with having a great time. I hope Iwata makes a bazillion yen and is invited to Sony's funeral, just for some beautiful irony.

Takalth its good to see more people with common sense like you. Fanboys love to ignore the fact that Nintendo has survided on the gaming industry alone all the way back to the Game & watch era. Nintendo cant rely on TV sales or Vista sales to keep their gaming branches. Nintendo has been succesful all the gen wars making profits each and everytime, thus allowing them to continue on to the next gen.

Iwata is pure genius when it comes to business. Sony on the other hand needs to realize that, yeah, it's all about the gameplay and fun rather than horsepower and realistic graphics, as well as copying their rival's system features and innovations.

xdr789 First profit is necessary dont blame Nintendo for having the radical idea of actually making a profit with their consoles. BTW just because you think something is true doesnt make it a fact if yout think Nintendo can make a prift for $150 then its your opinion the ONLY fact is that only the production department at Nintendo knows the profti margin per console, not some guy randomly posting at a forum.

This proves is overpriced and Nintendo is bringing the HUGE profits to the bank! All of you know now I was right, $250 is too much for last gen hardware! They could still make profit off of $150 for a Wii

Excellent job on the part of Iwata, Miyamoto and to everyone else that was involved in helping Nintendo get back on it's feet this generation. They finally realized they didn't HAVE to compete against Sony or Microsoft in order to gain it's former glory. Sony and Microsoft are currently too busy fighting each other and NIntendo saw no need to bring Nintendo into this battle. Not to say they aren't competing, but their strategy is actually a brilliant one. As it stands Sony is beggining to crumble and we might even see them pull the plug on the Playstation this generation. IF that happens we can definatelly start seeing a very competitive Nintendo resurface next gen just like how we all remember it back in the SEGA/Nintendo era......ah good times

You know, Nintendo didn't turn around, they just accelerated. Look at the profit's made in the last generation instead of the sales numbers and you might be surprised to see how successful the Gamecube was. Sony blew the other two away in sales last gen, but they did so by spending ridiculous amounts of money to persuade companies to produce exclusives for them. Plus, Nintendo's big titles were in-house development for the most part, so they aren't sharing as much of the profit. I'm not saying that Sony didn't have a great business model (what happened?) but you can't determine the success of a company on sales alone.
