Publisher NCSoft West has announced the release date of its anticipated MMO, Blade & Soul. The game will be launching in North America and Europe on January 19, 2016 at 12AM EST. Players who purchase a Founder's Pack will get a head start on January 15.

Blade & Soul was hugely successful in Asia when it first launched in 2013, reportedly hitting 1.8 million concurrent users within the year in China alone (via Engadget). By comparison, Blizzard's World of Warcraft hit one million subscribers in North America and Canada a year after its launch.

The game will feature seven classes at launch, 30 dungeons, a level cap of 45, and a 1v1 Arena. Players interested in signing up can do so at the Blade & Soul website. Alernatively, NCSoft West is also offering various paid packs for players who wish to gain access to the upcoming Closed Beta tests.

Blade & Soul is a free-to-play MMO which draws inspiration from classic Asian martial arts adventure films. It is developed by Korean studio NCSoft (Team Bloodlust), who has worked on games such as Lineage, Aion, and more recently, Guild Wars 2. NCSoft also published Carbine Studios' WildStar.

The character build features are very in depth. The game is very pretty, lots of sexy things to look at. However, you have to bid for your loot in a dungeon/raid run. Your bidding against other players for reward items. When you have paid/bid for said items you must have keys/unseal charms to open the boxes. Many dungeon runs early on drop loot boxes but you will need the keys/unseal charms to open. If you run out of keys/unseal charms you have to buy them or craft them, or run dailies to get them. This gives the game a very "grindy" feel. It also makes you feel like your constantly paying to get at your "loot rewards". The costumes and vanity items are beautiful and the combat system is easy in my opinion but fun. You won't be able to keybind some of your main skills because those are set and you will have to get use to a very "different" type of playstyle with this regard. If you like grinding, doing dailies, grinding up professions etc. Then this game is for you. If you don't mind having to pay for unsealing charms and keys to get out your loot rewards then this game is for you. I do like some of the game features. I think the "floaty" flying in the air is different. It takes some practice however to get the hang of it for traveling and getting to areas that are sometimes challenging to get at. Anyway I am interested to see how well this game does once it has fully released.

I just don't know why they don't make a server for Western gamers when the game is hyped like 6 years ago. Now, it may be too late. People are swarmed with much more polished next-gen MMOs

@namph01474: 1) I played the beta last weekend (closed) and I can confirm this game is exceptional, the combat is quite amazing, I heard it's tera with better combat from others.

Anyway the story is quite interesting too and the cutscenes are paid game worthy. The game is great.

2) This game hasn't been out in korea for 6 years, only like 2 years at the most. We aren't getting how the game was released over there, we are getting more content than that since they are so far into it, and the game is great.

Only played as a KFM in CBT 2 so far and it was pretty good, better than TERA's pseudo action point and click system imo.

Thank you Gamespot for the beta key for last weekend close beta. I really enjoyed playing as the Blade Dancer class. I'll likely play at release to max out this class, go through story and dungeons.

I'm sort of stuck on that premium membership stuff. I didn't mind the gem store in GW2, because it was cut and dry, but they have membership levels and the like.

Problem is, outside of Asia, the MMO market has collapsed.

F2P MMOs have never been in less demand.

@Thanatos2k: As a current GW2 player, I differ with that opinion. MMO in the west are still in demand. What they are tired off is grind, gold sink in games - but they still play them. FF14 is a major success, as an MMO. From being one of the worst implemented MMO, to what it is now. Is remarkable. Any other MMO would have closed down with the way FF14 was.

F2P are only used as a filler, not as a major thing - though some play these are their main MMO. When I wanted a small break from GW2, I tried Asura Kingdom and Archeage.

@calamityo: Quote "MMO in the west are still in demand. What they are tired off is grind, gold sink in games - but they still play them".

The game is amazingly beautiful in my opinion, however this game is very much a grind. Your going to get a lot of players and defenders of this game come off very defensive when you mention how much this game really is an "ingame money sink" and that it is "grindy". I am in the CBT and it just takes the fun out of getting loot rewards when you have to use charms/seals to open your loot boxes just to get at some reward. In addition in a very round about way it feels like a "pay to win" type game when you run a dungeon or raid and you have to bid against other players for loot. If you like "grindy" games and you like doing dailies and professions and grinding them up then this game may suit you. The story is "meh", but I do like the targeting system they have and the combat is very fun and unique. This game has had to be tailored somewhat for the western market. But overall it isn't too bad an MMO. I do think that many players who are complaining about MMO's having had their day are primarily aging players who have just 'burned out" on these types of games altogether. Anyway these are just my opinions.

@savagerodent: Unless you buy expansions or microtransactions, the prior cutting the game community to pieces, an mmo can't survive.

@Agermemnon: I don't care for the "Game Guard" they use. It sort of reminds me of the "Pando" program that Aion used/uses. It slows your system down.

@omotih: Played in one of the closed beta, It was fun to say the least, PVP will probably be a thing, game was packed even though it was closed beta. Safe to say you're wrong.

I remember reading about this game six years ago. I coudn't wait, so I started to play on some buggy, laggy private server in 2012. I was sooo hyped for the full release. Now... now I don't give a f**k about this game. Sorry, NCSoft. It's too late.

Yeesh! Games in general have a penchant for the melodramatic, but that trailer was way over the top.

Doesn't look like this is my cup of tea, but I'm happy for others who are into this sort of game. If nothing else, it's always nice to have more options.
