How To Refill Soul Gems And Enchant Weapons In Oblivion Remastered

Soul Gems play a major role in Oblivion Remastered, as they're needed to enchant weapons and refill their enchantment, but how exactly do they work?

Comments

Soul Gems are some of the most valuable pieces of loot you can add to your inventory in Oblivion Remastered. Not only are they needed to enchant weapons, but they're also needed to maintain the enchantment on your existing high-tier weapons. Of course, as you likely already know, Soul Gems are incredibly difficult to come across, and the game doesn't explain whatsoever how they work.

So, to help you with all of your enchanting needs in Cyrodiil, let's go over how to find and refill Soul Gems as well as how to use them to enchant weapons. For more general questions in Oblivion Remastered, make sure to check out our entire walkthrough of the game.

How to get Soul Gems in Oblivion Remastered

First and foremost, how do you go about acquiring Soul Gems? Well, there are several different types of Soul Gems, and the higher tier of gems they are, the harder they are to come by. Here's every type of Soul Gem you can find in Oblivion Remastered:

  • Petty Soul Gem
  • Lesser Soul Gem
  • Common Soul Gem
  • Greater Soul Gem
  • Grand Soul Gem
  • Black Soul Gem

As you might expect, you're far more likely to find Petty and Lesser Soul Gems than you are Grand or Black Soul Gems. To find any Soul Gem, though, you simply need to explore the map of Cyrodiil, open any chest you find, and loot the bodies of any enemy you kill. This is the standard way to find Soul Gems and most loot items in the game.

However, Soul Gems can also be picked up for free by visiting any one of the local Mages Guilds in Oblivion Remastered. After you join the Mages Guild, you can loot just about any item that's lying around the guild building. This includes Soul Gems, which are either lying around on tables or in display cases that you need to lockpick to get to.

Finally, Soul Gems can also be purchased from specific merchants in Cyrodiil. Not every merchant will have Soul Gems for sale, though, so you want to stick with mage-specific merchants or general traders that carry a wide assortment of goods. Petty and Lesser Soul Gems go for a modest amount of gold, while Common and Greater Soul Gems will cost a pretty penny. It's rare to find a merchant selling either a Grand or Black Soul Gem, but if they are, the gems cost an arm and a leg to buy.

How to refill Soul Gems and enchanted weapons

Now that you have some Soul Gems in your inventory, how do you use them to refill a weapon's enchantment, and how do you refill the gem itself? Let's start with refilling the Soul Gem.

Sometimes when you pick up a Soul Gem, it won't be charged. Or, after you use a Soul Gem to refill a weapon's enchantment, its charge will be used up. In either case, you need to refill the Soul Gem so it becomes usable. To do that, you need to use the Soul Trap spell from your spellbook in Oblivion Remastered.

The Soul Trap spell can be acquired by purchasing it from most mage vendors. Specifically, you can usually talk to a Mage Guild master, and they'll have the spell available to buy for roughly 300 gold. Once you have the Soul Trap spell, use it from your spellbook on any one of your unfilled Soul Gems to recharge it, allowing you to use it again.

Now that you have a charged Soul Gem, you can use it to refill an enchantment on a weapon. All enchanted weapons have a charge meter, and when that meter goes to zero, the specific enchantment's effects won't work until the weapon is recharged.

You can recharge a weapon's enchantment by selecting any one of your charged Soul Gems from your inventory and applying it to the weapon you want to recharge. All you have to do for this is click on the Soul Gem in your inventory, and you'll be brought to the recharge menu. Keep in mind that the Soul Gem you use carries a specific amount that it will charge the weapon by. For example, a Petty Soul Gem only gives a weapon a small number of charges, while a Grand Soul Gem usually fully recharges a weapon. You can see how much a certain Soul Gem will charge the weapon on the enchantment screen after choosing to use a Soul Gem.

How to enchant weapons and gear with Soul Gems

Finally, you can use Soul Gems to enchant a regular weapon or piece of gear in Oblivion Remastered. This is done by visiting an Altar of Enchantment, which you can access at the Arcane University after joining the Mages Guild and becoming an Apprentice. This occurs after you receive a recommendation from all of the Mages Guild masters across the map. You can also access an Altar of Enchantment at Frostcrag Spire, which is a player-owned home you can buy to the northeast of Bruma.

At the Altar of Enchantment, you can use an unenchanted weapon or gear piece with a Soul Gem to add an enchantment to it. The Soul Gem you choose to enchant the weapon or gear with determines the potency of the enchantment that is applied. After picking a Soul Gem, choose an enchantment that you will bestow upon the weapon or gear. Again, the better the Soul Gem, the better the enchantment you can use.

Once you've made all of your selections, you can enchant your item. As always, the item will need to be recharged with another Soul Gem after it's been used for a certain period of time in Oblivion Remastered.
