How Is FIFA 18 On Nintendo Switch?

Switching flanks?

When EA first revealed that FIFA would be coming to Nintendo Switch, the first question many fans asked was: which version of FIFA? The company later confirmed it would indeed be FIFA 18--not, as some imagined after PS Vita's watered down FIFA Football, FIFA For Switch.

However, after a brief play session at E3 2017, it appears the football game coming to Nintendo's hybrid console is not quite the fully-fledged title I was hoping for. We already discovered that the Switch version won't run on the same engine and doesn't include The Journey, FIFA's story mode, but the problems run deeper than those. Upon playing FIFA 18 on Switch for the first time, it becomes apparent that this is definitely not FIFA 18. This is not the same game I played a month ago on PS4.

Now Playing: GS News Update: FIFA 18 For Nintendo Switch Doesn't Run On Frostbite Or Have The Journey Mode

From the character models to the feel of the dribbling, almost everything feels quite far removed from FIFA 18 on PS4 and Xbox One. It's probably closest to FIFA 15 or 16's gameplay in its on-pitch action--a little quicker both to respond and to move--and given I wasn't a huge fan of FIFA 18 at preview stage, that's probably a good thing.

Other than that, it feels fairly feature-rich and as competent a FIFA port as you could realistically expect on Switch. Until you detach the Joy-Cons to play in multiplayer, that is.

For many FIFA players, the primary--if not only--reason to buy FIFA on Switch ahead of the full PS4, Xbox One, or PC versions would be to have the ability to play on the move with friends. But playing with just one Joy-Con each makes it far too difficult to enjoyably do so. Fewer buttons than a standard controller (you lose out on two triggers, a d-pad, and a stick) means less flexibility on the pitch. On the standard control scheme, no adaptations are made to the original controls, so instead of, say, assigning a heavy touch to a double flick of the left stick in lieu of the the absent right, there simply appears to be no way of performing a heavy touch. This also applies to skill moves, accurate changes of player while defending, changing tactics on-the-fly, finesse shots, driven passes, and all types of chipped kicks.

Taking away functionality depending on your controller setup is incredibly frustrating, so here's hoping EA can implement an elegant solution in time for launch on September 29, 2017.

While FIFA 18 feels a little dated, then, it is still a lot of fun. However, if you plan to play on-the-go-multiplayer--the port's primary advantage over the PS4 and Xbox One editions--it might be best not to switch flanks from console.

This is a stupid preview

1. So it's Nintendo's and EA for a system to give you a system that at least gives you the option to play it in some form. If you can't handle playing it with a single joy con, go and buy an extra pair or a pro controller. That's a stupid reason by the editor and shows the journalist is looking for an excuse to bash the game.

2. Everyone needs to stop making the journey important because it's not, I personally didn't play the first one and I'm not looking forward to this one, it's superficial nonsense at best and adds nothing to the main focus of the sport: multiplayer.

3. From a gameplay standpoint, the only thing FIFA 17 did better and obviously this one is graphics, they did nothing to gameplay that was revolutionary to the series other than some tweaks here and there, to a point, I felt that fifa15 played better than 17. I don't see this being any different with the PS4 and switch iterations.

This is a stupid article and can't understand why we have to take this guys words.

We may get this for the Switch. We'll have no problem with having to share the joycons. I've already purchased a pro controller so both players on tabletop mode will be able to use full fledged controllers without missing a beat. Problem solved.

Who cares???

EA are clearly looking for an excuse not to develop any games for the switch.

Once it doesn't sell then they have their reason.

If that weren't true then why isn't battlefield on switch??

So the only reason you would want to play on the Switch, because you can play it mobile, is ruined by the fact that the controllers don't have enough buttons. And to make it worse, they didn't re-assing the controls to combinations of buttons, but just ignored the controls altogether. Oh, Nintendo!

@KevComesRipping: No, Nintendo made an agreement with EA. They knew full and well what they were getting.

And when it doesn't sell on the Switch because it's missing features and it's a different game, EA will sour on the Switch and won't release anything else for it. Meanwhile I think Ubisoft will do well with Mario+Rabbids.

why do they waste their time and resource on the switch... it will sell only 2 copies no matter how good it is. maybe they should have called it FIFA Mario 2018

@ltjohnnyrico: You'd think you do, but if you read the article you see that if you play on the Switch you lose part of the controls, you lose game modes, etc. so you are technically getting less than you think you're getting. :D

@livedreamplay: Except, don't forget that the switch has a controller with MORE buttons, so all isn't lost.

@nintendoboy16: True, but I feel as the main plus for the Switch version would've been that you can play on the go, so that's lost...

Sounds like every game that releases for the Switch will be some obvious compromise, but who cares!

I don't think the primary reason to get a sports game on the Switch is to play multiplayer. The primary reason is that its portable and can be played at anytime. Sports games, especially seasons and franchise modes are time sucks. You may not always be able to set aside a lot of time in front of the TV or PC to play them. But as expected, EA was going to dial it in on a Nintendo platform and then act like they have a problem when people don't buy it.

First impressions leave me thinking that this is a transparent attempt to sabotage sales of the game on the Switch so they can justify not supporting the device going forward. Hopefully this isn't the case and they are planning to port Frostbite to the Switch in the near future so we can get parity (or near parity) in Fifa games soon

@pspearman: Probably not, developing a game for a console isn't a one sided affair. Nintendo knew that the lack of buttons on the tiny controllers would be a problem, they knew that not all game modes will be included, etc.

@pspearman: It's similar to what they did for PS Vita, in the end it was the exact same game each year. I might still buy the Switch version to play at work as well as the PC version, but if I do it'll be through gritted teeth.

Mind you they did the same for PC until 2011 (I think) and it was using an ancient engine. In the end they figured out there was money to be made on PC, so here's hoping they feel the same on Switch. It's EA though, so who knows....

Darn, as i watch another FIFA impressions on the Switch from another website, their thoughts was good enough to convince me to buy a 2nd copy on the switch just to play in on the go, but this article just makes me doubt about it

@livedreamplay: No they didn't, and how in the world that Switch Controler is lack of buttons? it has the same amount (if not more) of buttons with X1 or PS4

the only thing that your story making any sense is when people plays FIFA using Left or Right only Joycon
