Here's What's In The $5,000 Drink On The Disney Cruise

Kaiburr Crystal is the most expensive drink in the galaxy, but there's a reason for that.

On the Disney Wish cruise line, patrons can soak up the sun, visit with their favorite Disney characters, and purchase an alcoholic drink that costs $5,000, called the Kaiburr Crystal. That's not a typo. It's a drink that costs $5K. Luckily we know what's inside.

During GameSpot's Chris E. Hayner's trip on the Disney Wish, he found that the drink existed on the menu; however, no one would explain what the heck was in it or what would make is cost that much money.

Eventually, after speaking with another bartender on the cruise, we found out what is inside the Kaiburr Crystal. And there's more to it than the drink itself. Served in a camtano--the ice cream maker-looking machine featured most recently in the possession of The Client (Werner Herzog)--the presentation is just as important as the drink itself.

Kaiburr Crystal contents:

  • Camus Cognac
  • Grand Marnier Quintessence
  • Yuzu and Kumquat juice
  • Taylor's Fladgate Kingsman Edition Very Old Tawny Port
  • Pappy Van Winkle 23 year reserve

Additionally, you will get wine from Skywalker Vineyard delivered to your stateroom and will receive a ticket to visit the vineyard yourself. So if you love fancy drinks and wine, and you have a lot of disposable income on a drink, this could be for you. There's no info as to whether it will up your midichlorian count.

I had a fifth of Pappy Van Winkle 23 at a friend's dinner party. It's a $6k 750ml bottle of whiskey and it's excellent. I can't justify the price, but, aged 23 years is something incredible.

Camus Cognac is okay, Grand Marnier is mixing alcohol and it's crap. French crap.

Taylor's Fladgate is portuguese wine. Vinho do Porto. Good wine, but just wine. I've tried 40 year wine and it was just wine to me. maybe I don't have the palate for sophisticated things.

Yuzu and Kumquat are Asian citrus fruit.

Having said that, I would NEVER, EVER pay this much for something to eat or drink.

@dirtydyk: To be fair Grand Marnier Quintessence is far from your standard Grand Marnier. I can’t say I’ve ever had it, but it’s not their standard fare.

@Setho10: agreed. I’ve had the grande cuvee quintessence. It’s better, but not too far from say Peppy 23 vs Johnny Walker black.

It’s nice, but it’s still the same mixing crap. It goes well with most drinks, but nothing is worth the 3k a bottle price tag.

@dirtydyk: I think you’ve kind of hit the nail on the head here. The simple fact is no one who respects good port or bourbon would ever dream of using either the Pappy or the Taylor’s in a mix drink. The whole thing feels tacky and designed for someone who wants to show off their wealth not someone who appreciates good liquor. The type of drink a businessman might have given me 20 years ago to seal a big deal at the Trump Tower, likely served in a solid gold goblet.

For those who don’t know much about liquor, depending on the ratios and size, that drink likely costs $250-$500 to make. The juice is of course the cheapest ingredient, likely costing them under $20 a bottle. The cognac is next, running between $100-$500 a bottle. The remaining three ingredients are extremely high end and rare. The port and the Grand Marnier run for between $3000-$5000 a bottle. Meanwhile the ultra rare and extremely desirable bourbon can run into the 5 figure range and rarely is sold for under $10k a bottle. So they have chosen the highest end option for each ingredient, but to mix them together? That is an insane thing to do that no port, cognac, or bourbon expert would ever condone.

@Cikatriz_ESP: I doubt you will find many people who have had any of those but the Cognac. The port and Grand Marnier both run for about $4000 a bottle, while Pappy Van Winkle 23 is so rare and highly sought after that it often goes for over $10,000 a bottle. I lived in Kentucky and worked at a liquor store so I can confirm that Pappy is generally considered the best bourbon on the market. But I have never tried nor even managed to see a 23 year reserve bottle. Same with the port and liqueur. Both highly respected but those specific editions are nearly impossible to find.

@Cikatriz_ESP: kumquat juice is, if it's in season. The rest is trash for upper crust people whose favorite flavors are the smell of their own farts and the originality vacuum that is Disney

OMG almost 20+ yrs ago I went on a Disney cruise it was there 3rd one, out of Florida. My cousin had 2 kids with spina bifida, rare, and her husband's coal mine and Ronald McDonald house and Disney gave her 20 tickets with unlimited access. I thought it was just gonna be nothing but for kids, it was and wasn't. It was amazing.

First off, that ship had concierge staff assigned to all of the kids, including medically trained staff for any disability. They would be there in the morning and had classrooms, events, plays, activities for them all day. The kids loved it. They were excited in the morning and exhausted by night. Tons of safety all around the ships, not like a carnival cruise where you lose a wife or two each month over the sides.

Me, my new wife, and best buddy and his wife gambled, drank, and played cornhole and water soaking sports all week long. Everything was free except for the alcohol, which the coal mine picked up. They had a theatre, magic, comedy, and couples games. The food was first class. The kids were entertained and the grown ups stayed inebriated non-stop.

There was no drinks like that on board, but I would have tried it. They did have this rum ice cream in ice pop containers, they handed out all the time. I really didn't spend any money, beyond getting there and back, and it was one of the best times ever. I have no idea what a Disney Wish Cruise is like now, but I do not remember excess, mostly a very themed event, catered very well.

If anyone gets a chance, try it.
