Hate Surrounding New Ghostbusters Is the "Greatest Thing," Says Sony Movies Boss

He wants even more.

The negativity surrounding the new Ghostbusters movie from a certain subset of the public might strike you as a negative for the film. But as the saying goes, any publicity is good publicity, and that appears to be the mentality that Sony's movies boss has.

Speaking with the Hollywood Reporter, Tom Rothman, who oversees all of Sony Pictures' movie business, was asked broadly about what impact he thinks the "online bashing" will have on the upcoming film. He was, suffice it to say, not too worried about it.

No Caption Provided

"It's the greatest thing that ever happened. Are you kidding me?" he said. "We're in the national debate, thank you. Can we please get some more haters to say stupid things?"

There's been a negative reaction from some to the new Ghostbusters since it was first revealed it would star four women. The early trailers arguably didn't help matters, though the one thing I think we can all agree on is the new theme song is dreadful.

Ghostbusters launches on July 16, with a new game (starring new characters, not those in the movie) from Activision coming just prior for $50. A special $65 version of the game will also be available that comes with a digital copy of the movie.

You know a movie is bad when the only publicity they can generate on it is highlighting people's negative opinions on it, rather than being based on merit.

"... since it was first revealed it would star four women". Way to word that. I really do not think the mass majority of the haters want to avoid this movie because the main cast members are female. It just... looks like absolute crap! It's a feature-length SNL skit. It's like a parody of the original. Comedy gone horribly wrong... and I actually enjoyed Bridesmaids, which stars a couple of these ladies. I've recommended it. All female cast. Here they just dress up like Ghostbusters and act stupid, goofy and extremely unbelievable. The original, while being a comedy in its entirety, had believable performances. It was like watching a real crew just doing their job and funny stuff happens... while catching ghosts. It was great and original. The only people I can see actually laughing at this reboot are a few years short of being able to obtain a drivers license.

I think the new ghost busters looks like pure dog trash and that's why I won't waste my money on it

So if I don't want to see it, does that make me a sexist?

If I do see it, and don't like it, does that make me a sexist?

If I do see it, and I do like it, does that make me a white knight beta male?

I just don't know what to think anymore....wait....does that make me a Democrat?

Well he's right and wrong.

All the negative attention is going to spread to the common movie goers that it's becoming s big deal so they'll want to see what all the fuss is about.

But then again look at CoD: infinite warfare, all the hate has given the game currently the worse preordered call of duty game in history.

The only reason I hate this movie is because it's handled by Paul Feig whose a fucking asshole and a sexist loser like Michael bay. Both use women in their movies as a means of "female empowerment" when it really damns their image.

I don't care if it has girls in. I don't care if the original cast isn't in it or writing it.

I mean star wars didn't have George Lucas or most of the original crew and that movie was great.

I only care that Paul feig is going to **** this up with is ego and incompetent comedy talent.

@emptycow718: Well bully for you! That totally negates the fact that Infinity Warfare's preorders are very low, right?

...right?

On-topic, not watching this film. Jokes were utter crap in the trailer, they showed what was probably the only worthwhile twist in the film (Hemsworth getting possessed), and the general contempt the director has shown for both fan feedback and criticism (critique was deleted and only inflammatory comments were left to give the impression of sexism/racism being the cause for negativity) means I'm not supporting this endeavour outside of seeing it crash and burn.

No Mr. Rothman we're don't you have turned a beloved campy movie into a raunchy Mad Magazine parody version with unfunny jokes and untalented hacks as actors. It has nothing to do with them being women.

It will be interesting to see how many male reviewers will give good reviews solely for reasons of fear of being labled a sexist, misogynistic pig.

Let us hope they will grow a pair and give an honest review. (not saying that the movie will be terrible or anything, but I think we all know that it will.)

Haters are not hating the fact that you have all women. Haters are hating the fact, that you are trying to make them do overacting of being nerdy. From what I have seen in the trailers.

The comedy and jokes are even worse than Sandlers. Movie might recover its cost from marketing campaigns etc. But no way its going to have even 1% of the impact the originals did. Plus, the only money the producer had to spend was on helmseworth. I guess. The effects look terrible.

Its what Pixels try to do arcade gamers. Same shit is what this movie is trying to do.

Hollywood needs to stop milking on Nostalgia. ffs.

Nobody with half a brain and respect for the Ghostbusters name asked for or would consent to see this bastardization. I never in my 30 years EVER heard a conversation with the words "I'd like to see an awful remake of Ghostbusters with terrible actresses in it". But that's what they decided to make. Literally the best thing that I can ever hope for regarding this film is that is loses a ton of money and Sony decides to never use the license for anything again since they clearly don't know how to handle it properly.

Sure! Your movie is a worthless pile of shit, and I will be laughing even harder when it flops and you are called out for being a retard for saying stupid phrases like you did! How's that? Sounds good.

The problem with this movie has nothing to do with it being all women.

But I've already been saying this movie is going to be wildly successful. Idiots will complain about it and still go see it. Because they're idiots.

I'm just going to try to ignore it. it's really hard though since there are trailers and other PR bullshit for it everywhere.

--some movies just dont need a remake
--i mean
--look back at the original GB the effects still look GREAT(we are talking over 30 years ago!)
--another example is "It"
--it isnt a movie that benefits from a more modern tech and mindset
--HOWEVER
--ill tell you a movie that if redone properly
--would make for an EXCELLENT remake
--Lawnmower Man
--with all the new VR tech(that actually sorta works)
--and the birth and MAXIMUM growth of internet technologies(since the original)
--rethinking that movie
--and rewriting it would HUGELY approve upon it
--plus
--the special effects in the original do not 'hold up' AT ALL

Because of him saying "stupid things" like this, I'm now going to start convincing people to not see it in theaters (though I imagine that won't be hard).

They're totally ignoring the fans, and the new "dreadful" theme song was the last straw...

I wouldn't be so sure of that. On the one hand you do have a noisy subset bent out of shape over "SJWs" and the female cast, but I think a lot of people are "hating" on it simply because it looks bad. I am trying to keep an open mind, but have not been impressed by anything I have seen so far.

I hope it turns out good. I think they made a smart move going with a female cast, because it gives the film even more room for the characters to "reform" in the reboot. But I can't say I'm jazzed up about anything I've seen so far.

I hate how they say its because of woman actors its getting all the hate, not everyone dislikes it for that reason, heck i've never even seen the Original ones, they were way before my time, the trailers though looked awful and completely unfunny, also Melissa Mccarthy sucks as she's the same in everything, she's like the female version of Adam Sandler.

--if you like bill murray
--he really is what held those cheesy old GB movies together
--that and slimer(and the whole ghost capturing technology)
--back in the day
--the effects looked SO REAL
--and even looking back
--they still hold up pretty good

--watch the first one
--it really is a must see 80s flick

@txuzai: 'hate' is a strong word. If what you say is true, then you don't have to hate it, you can feel nothing for it ~ which is perhaps, the more legitimate and justified response.

@Oogazi: why would he feel nothing about people saying that everyone who dislikes the movie is sexist, when he dislikes it for different reasons?

so you are saying he should feel nothing about being called sick, vile and sexist just because he doesn't like a movie?

is that, like a really bad joke?

@Jdzspace: I'm not saying he can't hate the response, I'm saying he shouldn't hate a movie for not watching it. If he doesn't like what he sees on a trailer, that's fine... you can feel nothing for it. No one is coercing you to watch it. It's like saying how I hate a piece of music just because it belongs to a certain genre, even though I've never listened to the specific track.

And besides, the whole SJW thing is just a silly concept. People who criticize SJW are just as whiny and as pathetic as the very people they are trying to criticize. It's honestly hypocrisy at the highest order.

@Oogazi: fair enough.

but at the same time, if you don't like something for your own reasons. and all you read about online is groups of people saying that if you don't like the movie you are sexist and bigoted over and over and over.

it's going to lower your opinion of the source, in this case, the movie. Because it is the only tangible thing that you can take out your anger at being called something you aren't.

it's human nature.

just like if a movie/game/product is overhyped and get innundated with, people get tired of it and start to hate said object. Because if the product didn't exist, then you wouldn't be getting beat over the head with it. Or in this case, insulted for simply not liking it.

not sure how you turn something like that off.

someone is either in an extreme state of denial or has taken one to much hits in the head from the SJWs because he's not making sense at all.

he does realize that nothing effects movies or any media more than word of mouth right? and negative word of mouth will kill any movie.

i feel like knowing that should be in his job description

"Can we please get some more haters to say stupid things?" Yeah, that kind of mentality instills way more confidence than actually addressing the worries of fans. I hope Bridesmaids 2, I mean "Ghostbusters", flops; critically, and commercially.
