Harry Potter Open-World Game Planned For PS5 And Xbox Series X - Report

The next-gen game from Avalanche is still on-track, even as some at the studio feel anxious about its association with series creator JK Rowling.

A rumored Harry Potter game is said to be planned for a formal reveal sometime after August this year, even as the developers look to distance themselves from the property's controversial creator. The game appeared to have leaked in 2018 with a small glimpse of gameplay, but Warner Bros. Interactive did not acknowledge this at the time.

Bloomberg reports that the project is in development at Avalanche Software, known for its work on Disney Infinity before becoming acquired by WB. The game is planned for release in 2021 on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. You can play as a wizard and roam around the grounds of an open-world Hogwarts and other iconic locales from the popular series.

Sources within the studio also said that some developers were made uncomfortable by the game's association to JK Rowling, given recent comments criticized as transphobic. Those caught enough attention to prompt a response from actor Daniel Radcliffe and Universal Parks, but the studio management reportedly hasn't addressed them widely with team members. Rowling herself is said to have very little direct involvement with the game.

Warner Bros. had planned to announce the Harry Potter project at E3 in June, according to the report, but shifted plans after the press event was canceled due to coronavirus. The new plan is to unveil its long-teased Batman game at its DC FanDome event in August, and to save the Harry Potter reveal for a later date. Meanwhile, reports recently circulated that Batman: Arkham studio Rocksteady is working on a Suicide Squad game.

When your point of view can't allow different opinions to exist; it means either your wrong, or you are weak and insecure.

Uh oh! Gamespot forgot one news story to close the comments on!

How far has GS fallen really, I have been visiting the site for 20 years now and it gets more and more a "think what we want you to think" agenda-pushing site that gets more irrelevant with games each passing day. You can only upvote and have no say, pretty much like North Korea!

She is Harry Potter. Without her He doesn't exist. When are people going to stop pretending to be offended for clicks and actually get a life.

I’m not even a Rowling fan (mostly like her work, I like her less). However, I’m completely with her here. A certain rabid minority is just losing its mind. What the hell is controversial about stating an objective biological fact? JK didn’t put down trans people, she didn’t say they don’t have a right to live happy lives. She said biological women exist. Only in the preposterous year of 2020 can such an innocuous statement garner backlash. Get real. When “progressives” adopt such utter nonsense, they damage their own credibility and look like a joke. Stick to fighting the worthy fights, not sensationalizing non-issues.

@ProjektInsanity: we live in some sort of post-scientific era now. history stops existing even in western world, as does biological and physical truths. its all about how individual feels

i kinda wanna say "simpsons predicted this"?

the funniest thing so far needs to be that if you wouldnt date a trans then youre transphobic

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Yeah, that one was pretty rich. I don’t like dating girls with fake nails, either. I’m sure that makes me some kind of bigot.

The preposterous thing about their argument is it vests trans people with rights previously unimagined for any group in modern US history (save perhaps anti-homosexuals)—that they should have the power to dictate whom I find sexually appealing.

Anxious about JK Rowling? How about focusing on your game instead so it doesn't flop like Mad Max, Just Cause 3/4 and Rage 2 did? Avelanche Software's reputation is at a low point currently and they have nothing but themselves to blame.

They have talented game developers, but they suck at making open-world games.

@gamerbum: That would make perfect sense unless they aim for 1080p 60 on XBox One X which should still be doable after Rage 2 which used the Avalanche engine.

She said women menstruate. She was accused of distorting facts.

Yep.

First they take away your freedoms, then they take away your art, then they go after your leaders...

Seriously, am I only one seeing all of the classic hallmarks of impending societal strife?

That's Cultural Marxism for you. Pitting classes, races, and sexes against each other since 1848.

It's scary how prevalent it is in our society at this present time.

@santinegrete: No idea. Media, probably. The best definition I've found is thus:

It is the idea of class warfare applied to identity politics. It is "social justice".

Using quotes around "social justice" because as we all know, it isn't really social justice. "Social justice" has become more of a derogative these days than, y'know, actually referring to justice for different social classes.

I think most of us realize that Rowling's statements were not controversial and her personal views have been very accepting towards everyone. There are people who have harbored a lot of hatred towards her for years because she didn't make Dumbledore's sexuality a major point in the books. She didn't see any reason to put it on a pedestal and have a confetti parade about it. It was just part of his life and wasn't a big deal. Some folks who are all about flaming were disappointed with that and have been looking for any opportunity to tear her down.

@timthegem: She believes what I would estimate the majority of people privately believe. However, public figures these days (which includes publishers and developers) are so terrified of inciting riots among the woke minority that they won't budge a toe outside the increasingly minuscule area of political correctness.

@TehMasterer2: It's because on the political left, there's no such thing as the "alt left" like there is an "alt right", where at least the right knows that the extremists are insane and they don't associate with them. On the left, because there's no such division, once someone is any kind of left, the rest of the left expects them to be just as extreme as the most extreme, and the moment one of them expresses a view that's either not that extreme or possibly even right leaning, they are shunned by their own community. The left is insane.

@Roman217: I actually find that there is far more of an open discord amongst the left than the right. The right seems to demand that you follow their views or be cast out. The left seems to be more willing to at least argue different perspectives but in general are more focused on the greater good of communities than the self-serving views of the right. So I disagree strongly that the left is insane.

I just hope you don't play as Harry, but as a custom character, nothing against him, I like the movies, I just want to feel as if I'm the new students learning the spells and going on in a new adventure

If you dig enough, you will always find something controversial any dev said!

I bet i could even find something a mastemind like Shigero Miyamoto said in an article which isnt political or social correct.

And i dont exclude myself from having a controversial opinions on things.

Maybe we should altogether stop playing video games at all?

JKR aside, the game should still be made. There was a lot of other people involved in the franchise. It shouldn't revolve around her and would be ridiculous to think otherwise. I personally don't care what she says, it's our own judgement to like a person or not.

In the end, this is a gameabout Harry Potter, albeit something she created, but it's not a game about her. I'd say the same if it was a movie or any form of entertainment lol.

And as you unlock all the achievements and finally finish the game, you are rewarded with the knowledge that it was you, the player, that was gay all along!

Her statements aside, the Harry Potter universe is pretty ripe for games and world building. Story wise the Cursed Child and the recent Fantastic Beasts movies except for the first one have been god awful. I just really hate retcons especially when you can tell that it's a stretch tying them into lore.
