Guerilla Tactics Rule on PlanetSide 2's New Continent

Swamp thing.

The war for Auraxis has raged on across deserts, mountains, and even tundra, but now it's time to add some roses to your guns and crank up your "Welcome to the Jungle:" The new continent of Hossin is now available to PlanetSide 2 players.

Hossin is covered in swamps and marshes and evokes the feel of a murky biome. A constant haze limits your visibility, while overgrowth, gnarled roots, and hollow logs offer cover on the ground. The terrain features so much natural cover that guerrilla tactics become the law of the land and limit the power of brute force. The canopies of the continent's many forests add a new depth to aerial dogfights where pilots are fighting the terrain as much as they're fighting enemy pilots. The facilities and outposts themselves are not entirely completed, and the continent has been labeled with an "Early Expedition" tag from Sony Online Entertainment to remind players that battling on Hossin is not free from hiccups. Bases that have not had their level design optimization are labeled with words that highlight their antiquity.

Now Playing: Is now the time to get into Planetside 2? - Hossin Update

No Caption Provided

The various bases that have been completed display how far the level design in PlanetSide 2 has evolved over the course of its life span. The new base layouts feature better interaction between the placed objects, like floors and buildings, as well as meticulously handcrafted terrain. The Hayd Skydock outpost brings the framework of the bio lab to the ground quite literally, having soldiers fight inside a dome that appears to have crashed or sunken into the ground below. You can tiptoe along the pipes that hold the framework of the bio lab's shields (which offer no shielding here). With the building itself sunken into the ground, the floor has become earthen, with jagged rocks replacing some of the familiar buildings of an otherwise standard dome.

The Gourney Dam outpost features a reservoir of toxic material you must avoid while only providing some fairly thin bridges for infantry within the base itself. The dam's capture point is across the pond from its spawning room, encouraging standoffs and drawing any and all traffic to the limited footpaths of the area. Just to the north of the dam rests Nason's Defiance, a building atop a roomy cavern, adorned with three capture points that sprawl across the vast area. Point A sits in isolation to the south, while B very nearly hugs the spawn tubes, and C rests underground in the cavern upon which the facility was built. The entire base is elevated above the ground, leading to light assaults jetpacking to ascend the walls, while other players funnel in through ramps and lifts to try to get a foothold to penetrate the base's defenses.

In my own play, I joined the Vanu in defense of the eastern facility, Nettlemire Gardens, as a New Conglomerate line of tanks assembled on the northern road alongside enough sunderers to supply a steady stream of money-grubbing dogs of war. I hopped into a lightning tank and navigated through the swamps and around the glowing shrubbery to flank the NC's armor line and damage their freshly spawned soldiers before they could push out. After my tank was taken down, I donned my jetpack and skirted the same path, climbing up trees to get a better vantage point and use my C4 to take down the blue buses that were spawning soldiers. My fellow Vanu handled the tanks as we pushed out the NC threat and began to siege their base to the north, The Ziggurat. But the pyramid's side platforms, featuring a spawning room and a portal, and a pain field to keep us back, proved to be too strong in their strategic value, and the NC MAXes pushed us off and away, and eventually a second NC armor column reinforced its comrades from the north and pushed us back to the gardens and returned us to low tide in the waves of battle.

Along with the new continent, PlanetSide 2 now features continent locking, which completely locks the continent from other players being able to play on it (until a new continent is locked). Continents may be locked by taking control of at least 94 percent of a continent's territory, or by winning alerts (the game's dynamic event system), which are now focused entirely on one continent at a time, rather than offering the global "capture bio labs" or "capture tech labs" that had been commonplace. During a continent lock, the empire responsible for the lock gets a surge in power on the other continents, as vehicles or infantry explosives and medkits become half price depending on the continent that has been captured. Hossin still has the Interlink Facilities to come, a new base type for PlanetSide 2, but a familiar name to those who played the original PlanetSide and remember the epic battles over the nigh impregnable basements of the interfarms in the days of old.

No Caption Provided

The locked continents help saturate populations on the other continents and ensure players aren't always fighting in the same place. When a continent finally unlocks once again, the warp gates on the map shuffle for each continent, freshening up the gameplay by giving the different factions a new point of origin on the land. No longer do you have to suffer from IndarSide 2 syndrome, where once an alert dies down you return to Indar for the majority of combat; now, you are forced to explore the other battlegrounds. Outfits are also now able to recruit through an in-game recruiting system to bolster the numbers of the organized platoons on Auraxis, and display outfit pride through purchased decals. Once a base is captured, the game displays the decal of the outfit whose members contributed the most scoring points in the base's capture.

If you've been looking for an excuse to get back to contributing to the war effort on Auraxis, the launch of the Hossin continent is what you've been waiting for. The swamps and jungles are the perfect chance to channel your inner Rambo as you sneak through them to rescue allies as a lone guerrilla trudging through the bogs of Hossin.

The gear gap makes the game nearly unplayable if you are new. I played the beta and decided to give it a try again this week. Picked up the starter pack items on the Steam sale. And man talk about one-sided fights, the only people you will be able to kill are other new players and people who are caught completely unaware and even then it isn't likely. You will do no damage to your enemies and you will get 1-3 shotted by every weapon regardless of what class you play. Played heavy assault with a LMG, and frequenlty pumped half a dozen rounds into an unaware target, they turn around and I'm dead in 1 second and that is with the defensive ability active. Any class with an assault rifle will headshot you from miles away when your weapons wont even hit the broad side of a barn at 10 meters (again that includes any of the upgrade items I got in the starter packs). And you will get sniped by people with 12x zoom rifles when you play infiltrator when you only have access to 4x zoom until you buy a 1000 cert rifle (~20 hours). So unless you want to pump a ton of real money into it the game is going to be a tedious, frustrating grind for the first couple hundred hours. Don't waist your time.

@SerOlmy I think I know what you did wrong, you Picked the New Conglomerate, don't pick that faction, its gear is hard to use.

<< LINK REMOVED >> you also have to get back used to the game controls, that's for any game if you stop playing for a while. I don't know anyone who can just hop in a game and haven't played it and months and just dominates. Maybe people can do that in cod.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You die a lot in the beginning but not because you're out-geared or anything. It's all about experience with the game, as it takes some time to get the hang of the battle flow. Join an outfit or at least run with public platoons and you should be fine though.

The gear gap is unnoticeable

I think you're just very bad. Which most people are.

@SerOlmy After playing this game for about 600 hours, I must say you are wrong.

I have unlocked number of weapons, purchased some too... but I'm still using most of default weapons as well. Default weapons are balanced quite well. I'm playing NC, and default LMG, a.k.a. the SAW, is one of better NC LMGs. Other LMGs are basically dancing their specs around it - faster shooting, less accurate; less damage, more accurate (by reduced recoil). Good overall, low ammo. Etc. Even attachments are balanced with pros and cons. Some LMG wil accept compensator to reduce vertical recoil, for example... but the same attachment will create more noise and make them more visible (when firing) on minimap. Handgrip will reduce horizontal shake, but will also reduce hip accuracy. And so on.

Default sniper rifle for NC is second-best, for me, after RailJack. I have unlocked two more sniper rifles but were reverting to default until RailJack was released, and that one works for me only because of my sniping style, not because it is better by default. Default rifle has high damage and 12x zoom attachment can be purchased for 100 certs (in-game money) which you can get in less than two hours of playing. That being said, 4-6x zoom is better if you are sniping medium distance. 12x is reducing field of view so much that even small movement of your target takes it completely out of your sights.

The best way to be successful sniping is by using cloak as much as you can. Snipe rifle rounds are showing trace, making it easy for opposing snipers to find you. You need to find good spot with solid cover, turn your cloak, expose yourself, aim, de-cloak, fire, cloak again and hide behind cover before your cloak discharges; then wait cloak power to recharge and repeat. Even with this you have to change position - if you always de-cloak and fire from the same spot, rest asured someone will aim there and wait for you to appear, or even blind-fire that spot and kill you even if you are cloaked, as cloak just makes you invisible, not invulnerable. All in all, a lot of work to be a sniper with positive K/D.

Re LMG. They are all less accurate than assault rifles, though they have more damage and bigger ammo magazines. Damage drop over distance is often lower than assault rifles, especially SMG many LA are carying around (like PDW). I'm level 60, my heavy assault has good LMG with good attachments and my shields are upgraded, and I'm still easy killed by light assault - especially those that take advantage of jet-pacs and hunt from higher grounds, or stay in groups. Heavy assault class is not storm trooper, it works best from behind, providing cover fire and finishing already tagged enemies. Unless you have Jackhammer (3-round burst shotgun for HA class), let light assaults rush in with shotguns and ARs and cover them from mid-distance, that will give best results to your HA; at least that is my experience, others will have different one. Try to aim for head (if close enough), head shots are causing much more damage than body shots with any weapon.

But most of all - and I cannot emphasize this enough - always try to join good squad (or even better, platoon). If you are solo running around, you are cannon fodder, end of story. There isn't online FPS that rewards more for teamplay - and punishes more for Rambo attempts. There isn't anything magical with upgraded LA, honestly. I have maxed shields and jetpac time, and unlocked PDW, Baron, GD7 rifles - considered among the best LA riffles for NC. Just for LOLs, I try solo rampage every now and then, and I frequently get my a*se owned and served cold on a plate by almost any small group of enemies I run into. It is really simple equation - 3 - 5 guns will kill you 3 - 5 times faster than you can kill single enemy.

Spending money on this game really gives you more variety of toys to play with, and occasional modest advantage in specific situations (like owning shotgun for LA in some indoor scenarios), but smart playing within team is absolutely the best thing you can have in this game, and costs nothing.

I have been playing this game from late 2012. September last year, I "infected" two mates to play it, and both are still playing. One had 12 months premium subscription for around NZ$100 and is already level 80. The other hasn't spent a dime yet and is level 50, with very decent kits and good K/D ratio. Fully free to play. I purchased some station cash and only difference is that I have 3 or 4 good upgraded weapons for each class I play, while he has 2 on average; some advantage, yes, but nothing overpowering.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I agree with Saidrex. I'm a PS1 and 2 vet. This is NOT the game you just jump on and have some fun with. Outfits are almost required, or at least talking on open chat about who needs help and where to go.

Generally, money won't solve your problems. What I'm hearing from you, is a lot of OPFOR coordination. That guy you might have been dumping rounds into, could have been a medic or had one beside him, quickly rehealing him back up. Going counter sniper solo, is almost impossible. Without a team chatting up where they're getting sniped from, you're almost always more likely to be seen moving to engage a sniper, than see him sitting in his perch.

The easiest way to contribute, is to be a medic or an engineer. It's a fast way to earn tons of cert points, while still giving you a little bite in the game. LMGers are ideal for clearing the interior of a base, more than shooting up the outside. And getting into a Lightning, is always a good vehicle to help support your side with. Stay near the larger tanks, and flank off their attack line, like a younger wolf working with a pack leader. Either you'll draw fire from the enemy and give the heavier tanks a chance to punch through while your speed helps keep you alive, or you might get into a position where you can clear out anti-armor nests and let the tanks advance on through.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Oh, I forgot: learn the roles before you jump into them.

Sniping in PS 2 is not like sniping in CoD or Battlefield. As good as you are, the instant someone locks up your location, you can expect a rocket or a tank gun to drive you out of your position. Snipers are harassment and zone control, NOT free kills.

Heavies, are the infantry support of offense and defense. Mostly because they can turn a fight INTO infantry vs Infantry, by deploying anti armor and aircraft rockets. As a Heavy, you should be looking to clear out enemy vehicles and MAXes, more than trying to fight against infantry.Think of Heavies as tanks. You want to soak up damage and attention away from the lighter units.

Engineers and Medics, are pretty much the infantry standard. Either class has a decent assortment of weapons, and more than a few tricks to deal with specific problems.

Jump Jetters are your Helljumpers. The LAST thing you should ever be doing as a jumper, is trying to slug it out with the enemy. You'll get shot down, and be right back where you started. Use that vertical movement, to get past the front line, where you can hack stuff and disable generators to depower turrets and shield barriers.

Above all, get used to dying at first. There is no automation in PS2. Everything happens because of player actions. So at first, it will feel like you are against the whole world. That's when you need to get friends to help you. Squads and platoons, are where you start. Join one, and STAY with them. Don't just flit off to a different part of a fight because your team's on the other side of some ridge or base. A group divided, is two halves of a whole. It's only when they work TOGETHER, that the whole becomes greater than the sum of it's parts.
