GTA 5 Has Now Shipped 65 Million Copies

GTA 5 and GTA Online continue to grow.

Today during Take-Two's latest earnings briefing, the company announced that Grand Theft Auto V has now shipped 65 million copies. This is up from the 60 million figure announced in February 2016.

No Caption Provided

GTA V was initially released in September 2013 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 before launching in 2014 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and in 2015 for PC.

On an earnings call today, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said GTA V and GTA Online continue to impress, with growth exceeding expectations more than two years after launch.

Looking ahead, Rockstar has teased that GTA Online will add "massive, feature-rich" content updates in the coming year. Players are still waiting for the promised single-player content, however.

In other news, Take-Two has announced that Rockstar is planning to announce some "exciting" games in the near future.

Insane to see a British game sell almost as many copies as the entire population of the UK.

I wish that the online part of the game felt better... i played it for like 100 hours mostly doing heists and the experience was horrible,
Not because the content is bad or anything... but because the connection, matchmaking, loading screens... and pretty much anything else that is related to better and smoother online experience just wasnt there...
I dont know if things are much better now? Probably just by a little at best...

--what has continued to blow my mind about gta5
--is how the price of the game has stayed so high
--an 8th gen copy still costs 40-60$ new
--gta5 is EASILY
--the highest valued 'single video game' commodity ever

--there is no game that even comes close to holding it's value(like gta5 has)

@TheZeroPercent: Means people are still buying the game, you will only see the price drop once sales drop.

@stage4saiyan: No way, only in the technical and graphical aspects. As for replayability in single-player, weapon/ item variety and story, definitely not the best. Aggressive police AI and small healthbar that prevents you from having any longlasting chaos completely sucked the fun out of the game.

In a way, even Saints Row 3 had better replayability similar to Vice City and San Andreas than GTAV could ever get. That is, unless, if you like the multiplayer.

@cboye18: haven't played 5 but personal favorite always been 3. Just going from gta 2 to 3 was like opening pandora's box. I got burned out on series long ago but always an advocate for gaming to continue growing strong.

If for arguments sake we assume the average purchase price for each copy was $50 US to account for sales etc. That means they've made about $3.25 BILLION on just game sales alone. Then you can start adding up the sales of things like shark cards etc.

@mikemurphy80: doesn't work that way. you have to subtract VAT where applies, retail cut, MS/SONY/VALVE share, distribution cost, and some other fees. only digital copies sold directly though their site, in territories that doesn't VAT it is $50 price = $50 revenue. you buy a retail copy for $60 in europe with the average 20% vat, retail cut, platform owner cut, it's about $20 revenue before tax for your $60.

@itchyflop: VAT is a kind if tax that the consumer pays and the retailers collects. It doesn't get to the publisher or manufacturer. With business expenses you can get it back or write it off tax.

@itchyflop: no rockstar doesn't see or get VAT that YOU pay at the retail. you pay it at the shop the retailers furthers it to the government and YOU can claim it back if you can write a videogame down as a business expense. you subtract it because it is Added to the base price of a game that is why it is called Value Added Tax, it is different to sales tax, it is not included in the base price of a product like many other taxes.

@Alurit: mike's talking about a number that's closer to what's technically referred to as revenue while you're talking about a number that's closer to what's usually referred to as profits. So, you're both wrong. :D \o/

...Or the other way around, depending on what name I put where. Point is, you're both wrong. :D

@duckofdeath: He is talking about Gross, the amount of money the end consumers pay. Revenue is all the money the publisher collects. Profit is the money you right off after every expense is written off and that is even less, because you have further taxes and of course the production cost.

Across 5 platforms..... Goes to show how many mindless idiots there are out there.. This game is boring. After San Andreas GTA was done for me. This is becoming a COD in the making. Same crap with only little differences.

@iaruelas: i see what your getting at, in some ways i agree, the genre changes with each game, however the similar game mechanics are the same throughout. I wouldn't agree they have been crap however, gta 4 in my opinion was epic , i dont know anyone that didn't like vice city .

How many in the series did it take for you to get bored ? 1,2 and 3?

@iaruelas: How in the hell are you going to say it's CoD in the making? New GTA after what, every 5-7 years? This comment is retarded. GTA V was a step up from IV in every way. So yeah ride the hate bandwagon because shit loads of people still play it and have a fun time every day.

Criminal Life Simulator... Yes it lacks in the SP content area but the game is still a masterpiece on so many levels. Now give us RDR2 rockstar, eh?

Do your homework Eddie. It's irresponsible as a journalist to say "promised single-player content". What are you talking about? Maybe you should go back and read what they said about SP content.
