GOG Summer Sale Begins, Offers Cheap Games to Fill the E3 Hole In Your Heart

Hundreds of DRM-free PC games can now be yours on the cheap.

No Caption Provided

With E3 behind us, we've now gotten a look at many of the games coming later this year (or, in many cases, 2015 and beyond). With a few exceptions, like Entwined, Dead Rising 3's DLC, and the Destiny alpha, the event hasn't left you with anything more to play right now--and that's where the GOG Summer Sale comes in.

As is always the case with GOG, every game sold through the site is DRM-free. That means you can download and play these games offline and never have to worry about using the site again (although it is working on an optional, Steam-style client, GOG Galaxy, for those who want such a thing). "Almost all" of the site's catalog has had its price dropped by at least 50 percent; in many cases, discounts go as high as 90 percent, and giveaways are planned for some point during the sale.

Similar to Steam sales (word has it that service will be offering its own summer sale soon, too), there are daily deals that rotate in every day and flash deals that change every few hours. As of this writing, the flash deals include Hotline Miami for $2 (which is worth more than this just to listen to its soundtrack, let alone play it), Beyond Good & Evil for $2.50, The Swapper for $3, Dyad for $3, and Outlast for $5.

More notable at the moment are the daily bundles. The RollerCoaster Tycoon series--encompassing the first three games, complete with expansion packs--is $9 right now, and the Dungeons & Dragon Masterset--including Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2, Icewind Dale 1 and 2, and more--for $21. These are offered at 75 and 80 percent discounts, respectively, or you can opt to buy individual games from either one at a lower discount. But what's laudable about the way the bundles work is that, if you already own games from either one, you don't lose out: You can buy the remaining games at the full discount.

You can check out the current deals--and get a glimpse of the next wave of flash deals, which currently includes Don't Starve--for yourself at GOG's website.

When I first started buying from GOG they only had a few old games. Now they have nearly 1000 and adding dozens daily. Some haven't been out long at all either.

Yes I have some of the classics on CD. But most don't work on Win7 64bit and at $1.99 to have a game that will always be available in the cloud and updated for my current OS is a good deal.

I've also noticed that GOG's prices have gotten a LOT better lately compared to Steam.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah but to be fair GOG was created by CD Projeckt and they deserve every penny for offering us all a flexible and DRM free experience. Steam also kicks ass though.

Only purchase worth my consideration would be the D&D Masterset, but, really, what PC gamer doesn't already have the games in which are included?

Beyond Good and Evil is a great one, though I suspect many own that by now, too.

The selection is just abysmal. They will need to pay me to play those games.

Good to see others doing deals but honestly. GOG can't come close to Steam sales. GOG sells mostly old games and a lot of crap no one cares about. There are a few good games but that is few and far between.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think the "crap" ratio is a lot higher on Steam than it is on GOG. Just browse beyond the front page. All the derivative overpriced hype games that even when reduced 85% offer less play-for-money than most games on GOG.

"a lot of crap no one cares about."

Not everyone on earth likes playing generic action adventure games all day.

I've hardly recovered from the deluge of articles about E3 and now this! I'll see if there's anything good at GoG, but the flood of E3 articles is nothing compared to my backlog. I've played like 3 out of 20 games I own on GoG and am about to start on number four, The Witcher 2. It's good timing to do this before the all-consuming Steam Summer Sale June 19th. Even though my Steam backlog is even worse, there is always something of interest in Steam's big sales. Something both good enough and cheap enough. Like The Gabefather always says: I'm gonna make you an offer you can't refuse.

What a nice way to treat someone who might become a PC gamer, even if only part time, because of sales like these.

To anyone who hasn't heard of or played The Swapper yet, I highly recommend it, especially at that price.
