God Of War TV Show Will Be "Incredibly True To The Source Material," Amazon Boss Says

"If you never played the game, you will fall in love with the show and feel very much invited in."

Amazon Studios is developing a God of War TV series inspired by the PlayStation game series, and a top boss at the company has promised it will be truthful to the source material.

Amazon Studios Head of TV Vernon Sanders told Collider that the God of War TV show will tell a story about "fathers and sons," referencing Kratos and his son Atreus. This dynamic will set against a "giant epic landscape," Sanders teased.

Now Playing: God of War Ragnarok Review

What the showrunners and writers have come up for the God of War TV series is "incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own," Sanders said.

He added: "If you never played the game, you will fall in love with the show and feel very much invited in. So we think it's going to be huge."

Wheel of Time's Rafe Judkins is the showrunner for the God of War TV series. Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, who wrote Iron Man and Children of Men, are writers and executive producers on the show. Cory Barlog, who directed 2018's God of War, is an executive producer as well.

Amazon recently ordered the God of War show to series. No casting announcements have been made thus far, but Christopher Judge, who plays Kratos in the game series, is lobbying to play the character on the show too.

In addition to the God of War TV series, Amazon Studios is producing a Fallout TV series from Westworld's Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

As for the God of War series, 2022's God of War Ragnarok sold 5 million copies in its first week to become the fastest-selling first-party PlayStation game ever.

And how does Kratos feel about all this? Has anyone consulted with him?

Yup! Right up until it won't be....

They should be very careful with who they're choosing to play Kratos too, so they don't botch it from the get go. It's very important they match both the physique and the deep, "strong warrior" voice at the same time, or it won't have the effect they're counting on.

"It would be true to the source material. It's about a father and son story..."

So...it's NOT true to the source material?

To which they mean "The show is mostly already written and we have already butchered the source material"

Big Word, "Incredibly".

Being True to the source material is not a question of degree.

It's a Yes or No question.

Now, while I would prefer they start with Greece, as that story needs to be told more than Thor and Odin, all we, the game fans, are asking the show runners is: "Please, don't f*ck this up"

@dirtydyk: Everything that makes the current Norse story so impactful is Kratos' history, so starting from the Norse stuff kills much of the story's depth right off the bat.

@Barighm: Its because the hot topic at the time was witcher basically being dead. Due to Cavill leaving and taking the fanbase due to the showrunners not sticking to source material.

LOL it won't. Kratos is going to get ridiculed and immasculated by every female character in the show. And he will be a side character in his own show, making way for the female ones. This has been the trend in everything for the past few years. Go feminism.

Rings of power started off as "faithful to the source material". But diversity quotas and equity committees and lots of people who think the source material is wrong got involved and it will be the same here. Also, faithful starting from where? In Greece? That part is absolutely essential to the character but what's popular is the Norse pantheon story. Basically I have zero faith in the industry to produce anything of value.

@hulk9177: about 10 min in the first episode a female character will be introduced and shown to be better than Kratos in every possible way. By the second episode Kratos will be a side character in his own show. The rest of the show will then be about said female character. There you go: adapted for a modern audience. Mission accomplished: another franchise ruined. Score feminism.

So they are going to skip the literal "God of War" story? This screams cash grab. To skip the Greek mythology story, especially when the Norse mythology story could be available for future seasons is wrong imo.

@sebb: Making a show about the most recent and popular God of War, instead of a twenty-year-old PS2 game is an agenda?

@mogan: putting the person who completely botched wheel of time in charge of the show makes me think there will be an agenda. That show made a mockery of the source material and truly did make the male characters the side characters... Plus ruined the arcs those characters should have had.

@VXXXJesterXXXV: WoT sucked pretty bad, yeah. And I don't have high hopes for a GoW TV show from the same folks. But that dude was implying that making the show about the 2018 GoW, instead of the original 2005 GoW was "agenda." Which just seems dumb.

@mogan: the agenda is seeing all superheroes now being female, and all male superheroes being ridiculed and wiped out of their own movies. Why can't it be more 50/50 like in real life?!

@sebb: You just said the agenda was making this show about God of War 2018 instead of 2005. The GoW reboot didn’t ridicule Kratos or star a woman.

So how is that screaming agenda?

Amazon has said that they are skipping the Greek origins of Kratos and are just doing the Norse mythology, so that is trashing it IMO.
