Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Driver: San Francisco delayed

Ubisoft delays marquee early 2011 titles to April or later as part of mixed first-half sales; sales rise 57% to $354 million, losses mount to $122 million; reorg sees projects canceled.

Ubisoft certainly delivered on first-half sales, but profitability is another matter. Reporting on its earnings for the six-month period ended September 30 today, the Parisian publisher saw revenues rise 57 percent to €260 million ($354 million). However, one look at the publisher's bottom line, and it becomes apparent that a touch of discord is brewing within the company. Namely, Ubisoft reported a net loss of €89.8 million ($122 million), off 34.5 percent from the same period a year ago.

Ghost Recon Future Soldier may soon be renamed Ghost Recon Contemporary Soldier.
Ghost Recon Future Soldier may soon be renamed Ghost Recon Contemporary Soldier.

Two factors contributed heavily to Ubisoft's profit shortfall. The first is the disappointing start for a handful of its titles released during the period. H.A.W.X. 2 and R.U.S.E., both of which were released on September 7, "performed below expectations," though Ubisoft did not indicate sales totals for either game. And though Shaun White Skateboarding's release fell outside the reporting period, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot indicated as part of a post-earnings conference call that the game is "off to a slow start."

The second contributing factor to Ubisoft's losses during the quarter was related to a substantial reorganization; one that involved the cancellation of an undisclosed number of projects. The reorganization and project cancellations resulted in a €45.3 million ($61.6 million) one-time charge for the company.

"Ubisoft is taking measures to adapt its structure to the major changes in the industry by reorganizing the roles and operations of its studios, which has resulted in the termination of certain projects," the publisher said as part of its earnings report.

Ubisoft did not indicate whether it had reduced headcount as part of its reorganization, nor whether any of the canceled projects had been previously announced. The publisher had not returned a request for comment as of press time.

To finish off the disappointing news from Ubisoft, the publisher also had two game delays to announce. Both once slated to arrive during the first three months of 2011, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Future Soldier and Driver: San Francisco have been pushed out of Ubisoft's in-progress fiscal year. The publisher now expects to release both games during its next fiscal year, which runs April 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012.

Despite the negative news, Ubisoft maintained that it will hit its previously announced guidance for the full year. Helping it do so is the hit-in-waiting Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, as well as strong performances from its Kinect lineup, Just Dance 2's 75 percent year-over-year growth, and digital sales.

Additionally, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood preorders are up 25 percent from those of Assassin's Creed II, a game which went on to ship more than 9 million units. According to Guillemot, focus group scores for Brotherhood are the highest ever for a Ubisoft game.

As far as Ubisoft's Kinect lineup goes, the publisher said that Your Shape: Fitness Evolved has become the best-selling third-party title for the Xbox 360 add-on in the US. Ubisoft also noted that Fighters Uncaged, which received dismal review scores, and Motion Sports are both off to promising starts. All said, the publisher expects to release six Kinect titles before the end of March 2011.

On the digital front, the publisher has seen a doubling in sales during the period, with its top performer being the comic book-cum-silver screen tie-in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which was released through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network in August. The publisher also called out the strength of unspecified downloadable content, as well as the digital sales of certain PC games.

Ubisoft expects to double digital sales for each of the next two years. One way in which it plans to do so is through the digital rerelease of some of its catalog hits. According to Guillemot, Ubisoft will release the first three Splinter Cell installments, as well as the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time trilogy through downloadable channels. The Sands of Time trilogy is expected to arrive for the PSN, as well as at retail, before the end of the year.

So you guys know, the first Rainbow 6, Ghost Recon, Rogue Spear, etc, were all FPS. Just because it may be an FPS doesn't mean it will ruin it. Only recently have they become "tactical" 3rd person shooters. They were always tactical, and have been slowly becoming more and more fake. Rainbow 6 and Rogue Spear were the ultimate as far as mission planning goes.

oh piss... why did I sense something happening with GR? driver I don't care for at all, ever since the first one and then the second to an extent I just saw no reason to care for it. Ass-in Creed's series has been nice, but I don't want it to become something normal or even remotely expected every other year. Now deep down I'd like to rage about wanting some Rainbow Six awesomeness, but heck it'll come when it's ready. If it doesn't then I hope Ubisoft catches the itchiness down there... nah XD

I got the Prince of Persia Trilogy on Wednesday. I'm having a great time playing it. They did a really good job with the updated graphics. There's a bigger improvement than the God of War games had.

@ lock445 OMG NOOOOO!!! I for one am really tired of all these mindless shooter games. We don't have ANY tactical shooters THIS GEN!!! COD is just some easy game that gives you a pat on the back for doing something anyone can do. That game takes no skill at all which is the only reason while those kill streaks are so successful. ANYONE could do that. The first time I played COD I got 20 kills in a row on my first spawn!! I don't want that. I want difficulty, I want consequences and I want my teammates to engage the enemy while I pick them off with ma sniper! :D I think Driver is gonna be worse. You can't even get out of the car in this game. It's all driving and anyone that isn't into that is going to pass it up. That's a lot of people.

This is not all that surprising. Considering the fact that every Splinter Cell game after Chaos Theory has been reviewed as "Good, but not Chaos Theory." Ubisoft doesn't seem to understand that innovation isn't always necessary, and if you have something right, stick with it. Not making it some non-stealth action game, about a stealth character. That was probably the biggest disappointment in my gaming history. Bring back Chaos Theory, then you'll regain a fan base. While I do look forward to Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, I know I won't be buying it just because Ubisoft is no longer a company I depend on for good products. It looks good, but only time will tell.

Why to people always say delays are good because they aren't rushing the game? Delays means they are running into problems most likely.

delays sometimes are good however i didn't the like the concept how Splinter Cell Conviction ended up after it was delayed, l liked the original concept. Even though i hope UBISOFT wont ruin Ghost Recon this and also i heard some rumors that the next Splinter Cell game will be in Toronto Ubisoft. I just hope the next one will be like the original and answer the events of double agent, Conviction didn't it felt more like a Non canon. I still have in faith in Ubisoft.

Well, there were reasons given for the profit shortfalls (and there would be hell for Ubisoft if it didn't give any - shareholders won't accept an "I don't know" for an answer). Too bad there was none for the game delays though. However, looking at their developers' portfolios, I noticed that both Ubisoft Paris and Ubisoft Reflections have done games with motion controls before. I am getting the suspicion that Ubisoft is having them make games for the Kinect or Move - thus diverting their resources away from Future Soldier and Driver. Considering how quick Ubisoft is at jumping on the Kinect and Move bandwagons, I would not be surprised if this suspicion turns out to be true.

double their sales? man that's funny. Even with the mass hatred everyone has for Activision, Ubisoft still holds the crown for worst reputation amongst PC gamers. If the more important games ditched that horrible DRM the way Ruse did, then they'll have a shot. The new Assassin's Creed and Future soldier... I'll get both on release next year only, and I do mean ONLY if they are UbiDRM free. Doesn't matter how cool they are, I'm not going to throw my money away at a publisher that tries to punish me for keeping them alive. You even have to stay online with that DRM crap just to run the Hawx 2 benchmark demo, a game I seriously considered getting... instant lost sale!!!

I get it Ubisoft. You have time to make a sequel to Hawx that is EXACTLY like the original with very minimal differences but yet your delaying Ghost Recon till next April now? While your at it keep leaving glitches in your games as well then making a dozen updates later just to make it stable (frame rate wise).
