Gearbox Could Be Put Up For Sale, Embracer Reportedly Seeking Buyers

The Borderlands studio--which Embracer bought for $1.3 billion in 2021--might be up for sale.

Gearbox Entertainment might be up for sale again, as reports have begun to surface that owner Embracer Group is looking for potential buyers for the company behind the Borderlands and Brothers in Arms franchises.

Speaking to Reuters, three sources "familiar with the matter " explained that Embracer has received interest from prospective buyers. How much Embracer would look to potentially sell Gearbox for remains a mystery, but for context, Gearbox was originally purchased for $1.3 billion back in February 2021.

If Embracer decides to sell Gearbox, the high price tag for the company will likely be one that can only be met by other major game publishers.

"Gearbox marketing materials are already available for potential buyers, which consist mainly of international gaming groups," said two of the people," according to the Reuters report, which adding that two of the sources mentioned that the deal is still in a very nebulous state right now. Embracer's stock prices rose following the news, spiking 5% higher and then settling to around a 2.1% increase later in the trading day.

Embracer Group has recently gone through a period of layoffs, division closures, and game cancellations as it looks to restructure itself and become more profitable. The restructuring process began shortly after an undisclosed $2 billion deal fell through for the company in May, and since then, Saints Row developer Volition and Hitman Go studio Onama have been shut down.

Gearbox wanted to go with the times and listened to Twitter, hence we got the turds BL3 and Tales from the Borderlands.

Volition got shut down due to this. going hardcore woke, turned the valve to 1000% woke.

Stupid studios don't know their audience, which 100% aren't the Twitter crybabies.

Their writing went from good (BL1) to insufferable (BL3) pretty quick. After what they pulled with EGS exclusivity, I no longer care about the studio's fate. Then again the EGS quarantine period was probably a blessing in disguise, I would have bought the game day 1 otherwise and would've regretted it big time.

I dunno. Anybody who buys Gearbox acquires Randy Pitchford in the deal, which is the very definition of a turd in the proverbial punch bowl.

I dont like Gearbox and they always seem shady as **** but considering they still own the Borderlands IP it would seem like a guaranteed investement (I have the impression those games sell well, maybe im wrong)
