GameStop "Actively Investigating" Switch 2 Forced-Bundling Reports

After customers were allegedly made to bundle hundreds of dollars of extras in order to preorder the Switch 2 at certain GameStop stores, the company is now looking to make amends.

When Switch 2 preorders launched in the US last week, physical GameStop stores saw lines around the block for preordering in person. Reports suggest some stores may have been looking to cash in on the coveted preorders by forcing customers to add extra games and accessories to form an expensive bundle, and GameStop corporate is now investigating.

X user and Twitch streamer Elea Tsentzelis posted about his experience preordering a Switch 2 at GameStop's Astoria store, saying the store was "forcing you to buy," accessories by "claiming they can’t process the SKU just for the console."

Tsentzelis later posted a full video of his transaction at the store, where a GameStop employee can be heard asking him to create a bundle with a minimum item quantity. Even after bundling a MicroSD card, Donkey Kong Bananza, the Mario Kart World bundle, and a Pro Controller, Tsentzelis is told he needs to add two more items.

In the replies to the post, most other X users say they had no issue preordering the console by itself at other GameStop stores, though some had similar stories of aggressive upselling of Switch 2 games, accessories, or warranties at some GameStop locations. Others claim they were told they needed a GameStop Pro Membership to preorder, or at least were heavily pressured into signing up for the membership.

GameStop's support account has now responded to Tsentzelis' post, saying the company is "actively investigating" the matter. "Any customer who was turned away at the Astoria location should reach out via DM so we can make it right," the post read. At present the Astoria store is the only one mentioned by the GameStop support account.

The entire preorder experience for the Switch 2 has been a little chaotic so far, with US preorders delayed due to Trump's tariffs, and the console's major US stock experienced high demand and technical issues when online orders opened. Console preorders are now sold out for the time being, though many of the games and accessories are still available for preorder. Switch 2 preorders are already being listed on eBay--but be careful to check what you're buying if you're planning to go down that route.

When the series x and ps5 were impossible to find, my local gamespot was forcing people to bundle extra stuff with the console purchase. I had my credit card out ready to buy a series x and when they told me I needed to bundle an off brand controller, I laughed and left

The thing that bugs me about Gamestop is how they are always trying to trick you to buy useless game warranties, on more than one occasion they have the receipt printed out and note the games and quickly mentioned the added warranties at the end, this is usually for old retro games and I always tell them "NO" I didn't ask for warranty and make them remove it.....

Not only that they usually snivel and say they will get in trouble if they don't get the warranties that I don't want added. They have a very toxic business model.

Now that you preordered the switch 2 and some useless stuff would you like to preorder some games coming out this month for the ps5 or Xbox? I have to ask or else my district manager will fire me.

This has been going on for at least a decade. Gamestop's practices are why most people have hated them for just as long. If it wasn't for people believing they were behind a cause by investing in their stock, they would've gone out of business almost 5 years ago. They are an awful company.

Nah dude. They have done this on their own website. I had to buy a bundle in order to be able to preorder the first Switch there. They had fully Gamestop-branded printed flyers in the store that let me pick which bundle I wanted(there were two). The only way I could way to preorder a Switch 1 was to buy two games, extra joy cons, and Zelda expansion pass.

They've been doing this for years. When the PS5 was scarce, you couldn't reserve a system w/o buying an additional 2 games or so...

@chisoxrule: I remember ToysRus had the same deal with ps1 and ps2. Could only get if you bought a system and 2 games and memory card

@punkndrublic: That’s not bad but when you have to buy junk you will never use, well that’s just screwing over your customer base.
