Games will never be considered culture if they don't broach sensitive subjects, Kojima says

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima says "games will only be games" if developers don't "cross that line"; expects Ground Zeroes to be controversial.

If games are to be thought of as more than just that--games--they need to broach sensitive subjects, according to Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima. During a roundtable interview with the veteran designer attended by GameSpot, Kojima outlined his vision for how video games can reach the cultural level of movies and books.

"If we don't cross that line, if we don't make attempts to express what we really want to express, games will only be games," Kojima said. "If we don't try to go beyond that, we won't be able to achieve what movies or novels have achieved. I didn't want to stay away from these things that could be considered sensitive. If we don't go that far, games will never be considered as culture.

Also during the interview, Kojima likened himself and his team at Kojima Productions to the characters from Breaking Bad, who stop at nothing to make their message known.

"In Breaking Bad, I also see that these guys are trying to go to the limit; trying to take it as far as they can to try to get their message across. For us as well. In games we have to go to the limit; we want to stay within this limit of how far...pushing the boundaries of conveying our message. We look around and we don't see too many games like this; that is unfortunate," he said.

For Metal Gear Solid V, the game's central theme is that of revenge. And to get this point across, prologue Ground Zeroes will feature some scenes that Kojima expects will be controversial. That said, he explained that he's not going to tone down the game's content just because some people might take issue with what he has to say.

"One of the main topics of Metal Gear Solid V is this chain of revenge. That is something that I really didn't want to step back from, I really didn't want to go around it," Kojima said. "I know that I will probably face a lot of criticism because of it but I really wanted to portray that accurately."

Finally, Kojima stressed that though Metal Gear Solid V is going to push the envelope, he doesn't think all games need to do this. "I don't think necessarily that all games have to go this far; in our case we have a strong message that we want to convey," he said.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, launches March 18 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.

I think there's plenty of room for games that are just GAMES and games that offer something more. Pressing the "taboo" button doesn't mean we have to have 90% cutscene/10% gameplay either. The beautiful thing about video games is they're only limited by imagination. I'm sure developers will come up with fun games that make you think about your own life, and, when you're tired of them, there will always be games that are just plain fun.

Kojima: "sensitivity = sexy half-naked women; culture = violent, crude revenge"

It's not just about pushing controversies harder, or selling demos at AAA prices, but actually providing meaningful ideas and stories in a single, complete can of gameplay.

Kojima thinks boobs and thong underwear is crossing the line. Yes, Kojima, that makes your games so much better.

<< LINK REMOVED >> To us games are a culture but to the rest of the world games are considered a childish and immature past time, what I believe Kojima is trying to convey is that one day games should be considered in the same regards as movies and novels, as a higher form of art.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>How many people does it take to agree that something is a culture? It's a pretty vague and almost baseless statement anyway, and the whole world never agrees on any one thing regardless. I'm sure when movies first made their appearance they probably weren't considered culture or 'cultured' to avid book readers. But does it matter and does anyone really care? The video game industry grosses higher than the movie industry, so if it wants to brand itself with such irrelevant terms, then I'm sure it's quite within it's right.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Almost? It's completely baseless. The people who look down at gaming and gamers will likely ALWAYS look down on gaming and gamers. It's never going to change. Movies were introduced in the 20s (if not early) but really hit their stride in the 60s, when the fuddy-duddies of the time died off and took their bullshit preconceptions with them. Same will happen with gaming.

If any developer has the skills to pull this off, it's him. Irrational and Naughty Dog also came absurdly close to match that level of storytelling.

First and foremost, a GAME should be FUN. Maybe this is why we have so few of these today. Most of the devs are such friggin' drama queens.

No matter what YOU interpret games to be, they are still looked at by mainstream as being a BABYSITTER to kids. There's a few "idealists" that want to look at video games as being "art"...pfft. I've been playing since the Atari 2600, let games be what they were INTENDED to be from the beginning: a niche audience's release from society. This is not the place for "political agendas". Bring in the good gameplay, innovative controls/experiences, and dramatic boss fights. Leave the BS at the door, please...

Kojima, since you're so outspoken lately, mind telling me where Snatcher or Policenauts are for next gen consoles? But you're over here talking about "culture". Ain't that a B...lol

Kojima-Sama, maybe you do not understand peoples' comments in English that tell you to shut up... because you talk too much and make no sense. Here, I'll say it in Japanese but in Romaji, so maybe you can learn a bit of English as well:

Kojima-Sama, Damare!

My God I can't believe how full of it you are Kojima!

If you and your team are so eager to "cross that line" and touch sensitive issues then why did you let Konami chicken out of publishing Six Days in Fallujah as soon as it started getting negative publicity? I love your games but don't act like you're some kind of rebellious visionary, you're gonna play it safe and stay within acceptable boundaries like everyone else.

Imagine humans a thousand years from now judging/interpreting our culture based on video games.

And why does it have to be controversial to mean anything?

The original Super Mario Bros. might be the most culturally significant artistic work of the 1980's. That includes movies, TV, and music. I don't know a single person of my generation that doesn't have fond memories of the game. Yet, there is nothing controversial about it.

@blutosan It's a silly discussion realistically. Technology is a big part of our culture. I grew up on video games. Who feels technology and games aren't in our day to day? Does everyone here not know someone that plays farmville or owns a console or a pc? How many pc users only use their pc for basic apps or GAMES. Games are part of our culture.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You are both missing the point. Of course games are part of our culture, but tradintionally they did not influence us in the way that literature or movies did, because they were very limited in the subjects that they were about. This has already changed, but there's still a long way to go.

I like it, but not so much because of the objective of getting games to be admired as much as films or books, but because it can actually make better games.

We need more mature games imo, not for the violence or the sex, but for getting the uncensored, and thus, full experience that the games were supposed to be.

Now of course, context will later decide if the usually considered harsh or mature content had no further meaning than making people uncomfortable, or actually playing an important role in completing the game's identity, but for a start, I applaud the attitude of trying instead of staying in the mold.
