Gameloft sales on the rise again

Company reports a record quarter, up 56 percent on same period last year.

Paris-based mobile-game specialist Gameloft has announced another set of strong sales results in the first quarter of its 2007 financial year. These come hot on the heels of full-year sales figures, which were released at the end of January, that beat the company's forecasts and were 48 percent up on the previous year.

The company made 22.7 million euros ($30.9 million) in sales in Q1 2007, compared to 14.8 million euros ($20.2 million) in the first quarter of 2006. For the most recent quarter, Europe accounted for 44 percent of sales, North America 39 percent, and the rest of the world 17 percent.

Gameloft attributed its continuing financial success to a number of different factors, including the "large number" of games released during 2006, such as Desperate Housewives, Lost, Real Football 2007, and Tennis Open 2007.

The company's statement read, "Gameloft is now beginning to reap the benefits of the massive investments made in previous years."

On the back of the latest figures, Gameloft amended its forecasted annual sales from 95 million euros ($130 million) to 100 million euros ($137 million), bringing annual growth up to 46 percent from its previously predicted 39 percent. The company also confirmed that its operating margin was expected to be in excess of 10 percent for 2007.

Gameloft's second quarter sales figures will be made public on July 26.

Who plays mobile games? Look beyond yourself. Every person riding a train or walking around in Asia has a mobile phone. The potential audience for mobile phone games is much greater than that of console or handhelds

Judgemental gamers of the world unite. Mobile gamers are casual but so what! They are having fun and there is nothing wrong with that.

I am not a mobile gamer beyond Tetris and other pre installed demos but it is always nice to hear a company doing good.

Mobile games suck, if you want to play games on the move buy a DS or PSP.
