Free Games For Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers: Here's How It Works

Members receive access to a library of "classic" games.

As part of its Nintendo Switch online service announcements today, Nintendo revealed a change to the free game program it announced in January.

At the time, Nintendo said subscribers would get a free NES or SNES game each month, only playable for that month. But this has now changed in a notable way.

"Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will have ongoing access to a library of classic games with added online play," A Nintendo spokesperson told GameSpot. "Users can play as many of the games as they want, as often as they like, as long as they have an active subscription."

The first titles announced for the "Classic Game Selection" (name not necessarily final) are Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight, and Dr. Mario. Super NES games are under consideration, a Nintendo spokesperson told IGN.

The Nintendo Switch online membership program launches in 2018, though a date has not been announced. Whatever the case, it's later than expected, as Nintendo initially said the online membership program would open this year.

Subscriptions will be available at the following options:

  • 1 month - $4
  • 3 months - $8
  • 12 months - $20

It's not even E3 yet and WWIII is already occurring down in the comment section.

Aaaannd it just got better. 1 game for 30 days was utterly moronic. This, this is how you do it. Perhaps it'll force the others to lower their prices.

Though I hope Nintendo eventually adds access to indie games. Be a big boost for indie makers. get otu a couple fo games for free, develop a following, make more sales with more games.

that is a smart move by nintendo. glad they allow users to hold onto the games so long as they have an active membership.

now the bad news: the games they are offering are archaic -- to put it lightly -- and are not worth the subscription fee. considering this a new service, you would think nintendo would try to impress out of the gate to get people on board? nope. still, this is a start.

now, get a proper online infrastructure going, ditch the friend codes and implement proper mic support and nintendo might be on to something. nintendo is a decade behind the competition but it is never too late :D

How are they "free" if they require access to a paid subscription service?

@captainwonton: I think it would be sort of a PR disaster to tease the possibility and then not come through. I mean it is Nintendo and anything could happen, but I'm still not sure they would have said anything if they really didn't know.

Yeah but the problem is the depth of this library, which I assume will be kiddie-pool depth and a new title added once every 6 months, with various excuses from Nintendo about how hard emulation is.

@Thanatos2k: That's where I'm at, if they add 1-2 games a month it could be an okay deal, assuming one of those isn't Yoshi Cookie, but the fact that they are still considering SNES games when this service should include N64 games has me concerned...

At first, I thought the idea of online classics was exciting, but then I remembered how dreadfully slow Nintendo is when releasing retro games. I think 20 dollars a year is a fair price, but it would be more inviting if Nintendo would focus on upping their catalogue of classic games.

A few things come out of this imo.

1- VC as we know it is over. This isn't a bad thing but I think short and medium term very little will be offered on a Nintendo VC. Just think so far: the Neo Geo classics being released by Hamster and now Data East Arcade Archives coming as well. Those are games out of the service Nintendo is proposing. There is this thing with Sega Forever sub service as well that could potentially take form as well in a Switch version (or they could just go the Hamster way and release individually as well). Also notice that VC development has completely stopped on 3DS

2 - The official comments regarding SNES VC is "we have no comments at this time" - this combined with the MS survey + abundant rumours now completely points at an E3 announcement of a SNES Mini which will make the SNES games on Switch appear further maybe in late 2018

3 - Take good care of your Wii / Wii U console because its unlikely anything outside of the NES and perhaps SNES later on will be on Switch any time soon (aka no SMS, TG16, GEN, N64, Wii, etc)

So now here's the kicker. Remember those rumours of Gamecube VC games coming? I still think they are coming but not part of VC service. You will have VC the subscription service and then, separate from that - "remastered" retro games (maybe with a new collection title) up to the WiiU (like they did for Mario Kart 8) simply in the eshop (maybe the occasional physical release) and those will go for a premium price.

Anyways my 2 cents and lets hope E3 clears a bit of this up further :)

I think that the price is fair, but i would rather pay what i'm paying for my playstation plus if switch had full party chat features. I don't see myself playing any online multiplayer on the switch currently.

Online play for classic games? Sweet. I want Metal Warriors on SNES please. Had a lot of fun with that back in the day. Ooooh and Super Double Dragon. Turtles in Time too please. Ahhh the possibilities.

Will we have online Co-op for SMB 3 (although you take turns)?

These companies sure do like to throw around the word "free" just to make it seem like you're getting something you're not supposed to be getting.

Hey guys, I just bought a new car and it came with free seats. I must be really lucky.

@DEATHWlSH: Consider this, PSN membership is $60/year, plus if you want PSNow that's another fee to play these old games. Nintendo offering free games when you pay a membership to play your switch games online for only $20. That's considered a damn good deal. You comment is irrelevant and makes no sense! But, you'll need to buy gas for your car to move.. just like PSNow... lol

@jecht187: My comment is totally relevant, a bit extreme, but relevant nonetheless. When I buy a car, I know I'm getting seats with it, just like when I sign up for PS+, Xbox Gold, or Nintendo Online, I know access to games come with it.

@DEATHWlSH: you're right, but only half right.. you do get seats with it, you do get monthly freebies with PS+ and Xbox Live, and you may get monthly freebies in the near future with Nintendo Online as well. but on top of that, you'll get free retro games (all you can play) without any extra fees.. unlike PSNow, and adding gas in your car!

Why am I explaining this again?? I'm done!

I'm gonna enjoy my $20 subscription with my free games... Adios! :-)

@jecht187: Offering 30 year old ROMs with nothing done to them graphically or gameplay-wise, that've been easily available for free online since the 90s.

Xbox Gold gets you dozens of AAA games yearly, and the 360 ones you keep even if you stop subscribing.

The Nintendo equivalent would be if they were giving modern Mario games, 1st party stuff, big releases, with the subscription. But they're not doing that. Nintendo is stingy and not consumer friendly. How about Nintendo gives Switch access to the games people have already bought on VC on prior consoles...that'd be too logical and fair...no, they'll charge them again for that same game.

@NeonicTrash: how much is XBOX Gold yearly fee again? and I'm not trying to defend Nintendo. I know they are stingy. I was simply stating a fact that $20/year is a great price to play games online but to add freebies (no matter what era they came from) is a plus. And on top of that, no one is certain other than the big N what they will bring out next with that subscription.. XBOX and PS have they're free monthly releases, maybe Nintendo will do the same for N64 and Gamecube games.. They did mentioned that the switch will support them.

I was only trying to say that $20 a year for online gaming and getting a catalog of free nostalgic games (especially for veteran gamers as myself) if pretty sweet!! And as for your comment on "free online since the 90's" those games were never free. Nintendo never released their games for free anywhere online.

Guys/Gals,

Please stop bickering about the free games... they are free!! What's you're actually paying for is the online subscription to maintain their servers for you to have fun with your friends gaming online (as most of you are already with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe!). $20 a year is extremely cheap!! and getting free games is a bonus! I'm pretty confident that they will have some sort of monthly freebies like PSN and XBOX Live that you can keep. The switch is still fairly new an in its infancy stage. Give it time. Be optimistic.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

:-)

@Thanatos2k: Look at it this way. They originally wanted $20 for online, chat, and 1 game for 30 days only. Now, you're getting free, at no additional cost, access to all games, not just one, for as long as you want, not just 30 days. That's where the free comes in.

Not to mention, these games usually hit $5 on VC. Now, after 4 games, every game you play is by default free. Granted, they've only revealed 3 games, which puts you in the hole for 5 dollars, but eventually it'll hit 5 or more. Boom. You're in free game territory.

@atherworld: They originally wanted to kick you in the balls, now they just slap you in the face. Why aren't you excited about the free slap!?

Also you'd have to be crazy to pay $5 for these games on VC. Also, if I bought 4 VC games, that's $20. I own them forever. I can play them whenever. With this you have to continue paying $20 each year FOREVER or those games disappear into the ether. It's not comparable at all.

@Thanatos2k: The ball kick would be free too. And it's nice to own those 4 games. But you'd have to pay more for more. 20 for 4? great. $40 for 8? Not so much. You get far more for $20 this way. So yes, those are free games.

So try it this way. For $20, you get online & chat only. That's it. Then they kindly offer you lots of classic games. Yup for free. You don't tack on the games to the original price. That's like saying shipping isn't free. It's part of the initial cost.

@Thanatos2k: you still have to keep paying to play your switch online games, so does every other console that has the same type of membership. I was just trying to say that at $20 to play your "SWITCH GAMES ONLINE" and ADD FREE games you don't have to "PAY EXTRA" for like PSNOW!!! that's what I was trying to make a statement on. I'll be paying my $20 for my Online support for my SWITCH games.. getting to play other games i don't have to pay (meaning to purchase the actual game) for, for free, is a plus..

God!! What does it take to make people understand, that $20 is a very low price to play your SWITCH GAMES online, and adding FREE (no need buy like PSNow) games and still not affecting the $20 fee, is a great deal..

@csward: If Steam started charging for online play for their precious MOBAs shit which make up most of PC gaming population, the 3rd world dirt poor would simply stop playing, but these people who have kind of decent middle class $, that game seriously on all that, they would pay. And these are a ton of the same people who mock people paying for console online gaming for years. But they'd do it if they had to. And they wouldn't even be getting the free games like on Xbox and PS.

@jecht187: You can't be that dumb. You place lots of weight on your assumptions & keep bringing up the straw man of psnow. That was never even mistakenly part of the service that ps+ offers. Ps+ & xbl gives new games as part of their services, & they don't require that you use a smartphone, which is a $300 pricetag for one capable of running nintendos application while still being able to message, talk, text. Browse web, etc that it's meant for. People are having to give up the normal use of their device, as maybe the wife normally uses the phone while the husband games, but not with Nintendo's service. Not taking up my smartphone is well worth the extra $40 a month. FYI, I pay about $35 a year for ps+ & xbl by checking cheapassgamer.com when I need them. Same with currency cards, $35-40 For $50 cards, while Nintendo eshop is almost always full price. If i had your gall, I'd assume the online service will be the same with no deals, so the difference in cost would actually make Nintendo service way overpriced. I couldn't care less about old.games. I played them all when they came out. I have paid Nintendo 2 to 3 times for some of them on VC after buying them originally for insane amounts, so Nintendo has been plenty paid for someone to enjoy them, as I didn't touch 3/4 of them after buying. I bought a new console for new games, but that seems too complicated a concept for Nintendo to grasp.

All these online games you are saying you will be paying to play online are a myth. Nintendo is playing catch up, only just now learning things that Sony & MS have forgotten because it's such old & irrelevant lessons. Xbl was ahead of its time in 2002, so they could charge for their service in good faith. Sony didn't charge on ps2, ps3. Nintendo without a smartphone app does not come close to what MS offered for a fee, or what sony offered for free (see, that's the meaning of free), yet they are arrogant enough to charge a fee for their first full throated attempt at it's inception. Offering a BONUS access to old games that many won't touch, is only because they have milked those games dry. They will not give access to anything they think people like you would pay them a dime for. See how hollow and meaningless everything I just said after the break is to You? Because it lacks factual basis, & is full of conjecture & opinion, right? That's exactly what many get from you throwing around, "they may offer monthly games on top of access to all the V.C. games, & it may even be GameCube & newer games." That has no basis in fact, and desrves no more faith from the average gamer than my rant. You may mean well, but you honestly can't believe those things, as you have no way of knowing that they have even crossed the big dogs' minds at Nintendo.

@lrdfancypants: Makes too much business sense. Nintendo has always failed to offer a consistent and robust offering of their EXTENSIVE back catalog. They hold on to them tightly. They don't want money. They canceled the NES Classic.
