First Trailer Revealed for 2016's Star Wars Movie, Rogue One

"This is a rebellion isn't it?"

The first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is here. The promo for the upcoming Star Wars spinoff movie premiered during ABC's Good Morning America, and is now online. Check it out below:

Rogue One is set before the original Star Wars, and focuses upon a group of mercenaries who are hired to capture the plans to the Death Star. It is directed by Godzilla's Gareth Edwards, and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Donnie Yen, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, and Mads Mikkelsen.

In a recent interview with Movieweb, Ahmed revealed that Rogue One would provide a different experience to past Star Wars movies . "What Gareth is bringing to Rogue One is incredible, organic, loose, kind of a raw feeling," the actor said. "When [he] speaks about Rogue One, he speaks about it in terms of a war movie. And he compares it to other war movies. What it will bring is a fresh pair of eyes on a familiar world. I think that is real exciting.

"We're doing something a little different to the other films. And hopefully people are ready for that, and will embrace it."

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will hit cinemas on December 16, 2016.

Sounds intriguing. I have to admit I'll feel a little odd having Rogue One refer to someone other than Wedge Antilles, but I can keep the nostalgia backlash under control for a decent character.

This looks very promising. Cast looks great, with all new characters---no baggage brought along with established characters that weigh the script down with reunion / franchise greatest hits banter.

Tell us this story, one we don't know, and about the characters that lived it....and about the characters that didn't make it.

Intrigued.

Anyone else notice how Gamespots comment section somehow manages to contain shittier people than Youtube's comment sections? (Yes I went there, don't get your pant's in a knot, we are all shit heads.)

You know, it reminds me of the scrolling text for Episode 4. It spoke of a battle the rebellion won, and they got the plans during that battle. Maybe we'll see the rebellion straight-up win a battle without help from fledgling Jedi or teddy bears.

@Mogan: Nope. The Bothan Spynet was involved with the plot to steal the plans for both Death Stars. If you've read the books you would know that the Emperor found out about the treachery of the Bothans, he traveled to their home planet of Bathawui and slaughtered a bunch of them until one survivor revealed that the plans were sent to the Tantive IV, the ship Leia was on. Yes Mon Mothma did mention their sacrifice for the second Death Star, but they were very crucial for the first one as well.

@Neptali54: But if you played the games, you'd know that Kyle Katarn pretty much retrieved the Death Star plans pretty much single handedly. Also, doesn't Shadows of the Empire involve the Bothans initial contact with the Rebellion?

Not saying your wrong, either. Just pointing out that the EU is full of plot holes and contradictions. Dropping it from canon was pretty much the only way Disney could find to resolve it.

That said, if there's one thing to be pissed off about losing canon status, you should be pissed about Thrawn. Second thing is probably more subjective (I'd say Darth Bane, even though I'll freely admit that the third book of that trilogy was a flop and the entire trilogy's take on the Jedi was kinda screwy), but Thrawn is definitely number one on the list.

@Neptali54: Only the movies are canon now, so it's still the wrong Death Star. Also, a whole slew of people were involved with stealing the plans to the original Death Star over the course of the EU; Kyle Katarn, the Ralltiir resistance, Han Solo's old girlfriend.

@Mogan: If you believe the movies are only cannon now then you wouldn't care about characters like Kyle or Ralltiir... So you can jack off to your own advice man. Also love how you ignore that I stated Bothans were involved in recovering the plans? Completely unacknowledged that bit like the fool you are. Damn, you must be an adolescent to ignore half of what people type or say and try to be like: "Well only movies cannon now, blah blah blah". Shut up dude. I know the quote was from episode VI but Bothans did die being involved in the first Death Star too. That is what I am saying. Or are you too stupid for your own good? Damn it I am done with this conversation. No point in arguing with youngling.

@Neptali54: God damn dude calm down. The other guy was right. Only the movies and media after TFA are canon now. That's what Disney said. Don't shoot the messenger. Be calm.

Was hoping it would be about the i guess now retconned rogue squadron, with lots of space battles. But this still looks cool and more in the old setting which is cool.

Oh good. Let's have the same plot in 4 of the last 5 episodes. Find a way to destroy the Death Star! It is so suspenseful. How will they ever find a way to do it? I know I'll be on the edge of my seat.

I get that this takes place around EP IV, but seriously, why? If you're going to do some alternate SW stories, why not invent some new scenarios/plotlines to go along with the new characters? How about something focusing on the origin of the Sith? Explore their machinations, so they are not simply one-dimensional villains. Maybe go to the Jedi Academy, and have a few training montages, scored by John Williams. I'm sick of the Death Star. Why not a smaller weapon with a similar blast radius, that could fit in a jawa's pocket - like a thermal detonator on roids. The threat could be anywhere - hidden - with parallels to our modern threats. Wouldn't this be more terrifying than a big metal ball begging to be blasted? What about a war between the Ewoks and Gungans? I'd pay top-dollar to see those two species tear each other apart. So many possibilities. So little creativity from Disney...

@Saxondale: But this isn't "how will they destroy the death star?" We saw that happen in episode IV. This is sort of a prequel as to how they were able to get those plans in the first place. We have never seen a star wars movie focused on x wing fighter pilots and a squadron team so this is fairly creative. This is also based on, from what I have seen, entirely new characters.

By god this is exactly what I have wanted in a Star wars movie(Well, other than a movie focused entirely around the Stormtrooper Corps, Army, or Navy). Screw episode 7(Though I enjoyed it), this will top that easily from what I have seen. I cannot wait for this, December needs to get here faster lol.

@Smosh150: They died getting the info on the second Death Star. The story of how the plans for the first one were stolen hasn't been told canonically. (Remember, Disney punted pretty much everything from canon except what was in the films, the "Rebels" series and whatever comics/books were to come.)
