Leading up to February's release of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix put together a 16-bit retrospective trailer that recaps the story so far. The eight minutes of nostalgia-inducing footage gives the series an SNES makeover, making it look like an HD version of Final Fantasy VI.

If you wanted to jump into the series, but didn't want to play through the FFXIII and FFXIII-2, this trailer might be all you need. Now, what are the chances that, instead of the HD remakes Square Enix keeps putting out, we could get some official 16-bit demakes? I'd buy that.

I don't see why the comments here are so negative. I think it's a neat, clever little trailer.

Square Enix: We just wanted to show you how good and engaging our games used to be, before we get back to the drivel we feed you now.

I wonder if Square realized the irony that the whole game would have been better if it was made like this, instead of wasting millions on shiny graphics yet soulless gameplay.

That was cool, except it doesn't really recap what happened very well since it jumps ahead through so much, and has dialogue to even heighten that fact; it's not necessarily a problem, but just saying. Hm, I still have to beat XIII-2, but I probably won't... I don't know. My brother will be getting the third one though.

I couldn't help to find this VERY cute and ridiculous nostalgic, although, for everybody who have played FF XIII and FF XIII-2, we know that the story dragged a lot and to get this comprehension of it was complicated.

Liked to see "old Ultros" appearing briefly : D

If anyone's confused by the recap, know that the stories are the same way in the games.

@franzito @Grenadeh @King9999 I have yet to finish it. I'm pretty much at the end but I want to do 100% of the side crap first so I don't ever have to go back and do it again once I beat the game. I liked the battle system - because they fixed the gaping flaws in the original 13 battle system - and the crystarium is SO much better than the original 13 crystarium.

Having said that Chocolina needs to never ever happen again, I now hate mogs permanently....but there were elements I liked. I liked that Snow becomes a less whiney adult who actually gives shits about things but I hate every other character in 13-2 besides Noel now.

@xeoneex66 @Grenadeh @King9999 I won't disagree there at all. FF13 is indeed one giant hallway even once you do have "free reign". FF13-2 is less of a hallway, it's like a bunch of parallel and overlapping hallways.

FF13 was just missing high-fives in combat like FF15 is going to have, don't worry guys FF15 is going to be amazing.

Not sure why i would play a 16bit version of FF13 games..., I rather go play the classics.

a bit ironic isn't it(don't know if this is the right word)

The 3 16bit classics this is based on are the best ff games while 13,13-2 and 13-3 are the worst.

GAHHHHHH.... PEOPLE. I will admit that while there are flaws with final fantasy XIII and XIII-2, making a 16-bit remake would be sweet but it is NOT A REAL solution.

As someone who didn't really grow up with FF (all about N64 life), I didn't play the gems FF had until I was in my later teens, eventually stumbling upon XIII. A 16-bit remake could make XIII's gameplay more enjoyable but in my opinion it may do nothing to XIII-2, where the actual gameplay was much more refined, assuming a 16-bit game will most likely follow a turn-based system. I don't blame Square Enix for trying something new since attempts at progression are natural. While some moves such as the convoluted storyline weren't properly executed, Square shouldn't have to make similar games just to fulfill people's nostalgia boners. If each game was similar today, I'd speculate that people would say, "FF is teh same thing ovr again lik COD LOLZ."

I'm not against 16-bit games-- I think they are a lot of fun. But for those who think anything past VI is trash: get over yourselves. For those who are skeptical about the newest installment, LRFF13 has a really fast, entertaining, and engaging gameplay from the demo I played last week. It almost seems like the transition from the gameplay of XIII, to the gameplay demonstrated in the trailers of XV. I encourage you to try it out. My hope is that the storyline in this trilogy ends with a nice coup de grace. /rant

<< LINK REMOVED >> Uh we've been saying that. FF literally is the same thing over and over. Same names, same moves, same monsters. The only thing that changes is the story and the art and the battle system, which really is the important thing to change.

@JachAnen @iawesome07 I feel like I'm one of the few people that actually enjoyed XIII and is a fan of Lightning, maybe because it all had to with perspective. Playing through it all, I felt like I was watching a movie than playing a game, until I reached Gran Pulse, where I did enjoy the way how they placed you near the bottom of the food chain in that area. (But ohmygod please get rid of Vanielle's voice actor) XIII-2 was sweet in the gameplay department but the story got very complicated. Nevertheless, I played through it and liked it.

I don't blame you for not finishing the game; I just hope that LRFF13 nails it.

Everything the developers were "attempting to do" was a massive step back for RPGs. And that's what we got.
