Final Fantasy 7 Remake - Peter Brown's Most Anticipated Game Of 2020

I can't wait to see how Square Enix has remade one of the most influential RPGs of all time.

2020 is almost here, so we've asked GameSpot's staff to share which games they're looking forward to most in the new year. New consoles are going to dominate the headlines, but at the end of the day it's all about the games, and there are a ton of exciting ones to look forward to. When you're done reading this entry, follow along with all of our other end-of-the-year coverage collected in our Best of 2019 hub and our Most Anticipated of 2020 hub.

While far from the only game deserving of such credit, Final Fantasy 7 was a key factor in Sony's first-at-bat home run with the original PlayStation, not to mention its gross dominance over its former business partner's console, the Nintendo 64. FF7 possessed all the ingredients Sony needed to tell the world that playing games on PlayStation was unlike anything else, and it worked. For the game it is, and the impact it had, few games carry the notoriety of FF7. The first chapter of the long-awaited remake will arrive on PS4 next year, and even though it will be confined to the first major location in the story, it's still my most-anticipated game of 2020.

Now Playing: Final Fantasy 7 Remake - Cloud Strife Trailer | Game Awards 2019

Square Enix has made it clear that the remake won't be a carbon copy of the original game in a 4K costume, which sounds like the right move. Slightly upgraded ports of the '97 release are readily available on modern platforms, and despite how innovative it was at the time and how much of it still holds up today, its heart and soul are clearly of a bygone era. The remake is an opportunity to introduce a more believable world, flesh out the main characters after decades of examination (and numerous spin-off games), and transform the turn-based combat system into something more engaging and dynamic than before.

Having played a 20-minute demo during E3, I can confidently say that I like the general direction of the new real-time battle system. Square Enix has introduced a modern, free-roaming third-person camera, and it brings you closer to Cloud, the iconic lead character who is also, thankfully, represented in much greater detail than his former rudimentary PS1 model. During battle, wielding his massive buster sword and executing special Limit Break moves feels both new and grounded in tradition. You can assign specific actions to buttons, or open the Tactical menu, which brings combat to a near-halt, affording you the opportunity to consider your options and choose the best move for the conflict at hand.

There is, of course, a lot more to FF7 than fighting. I can't wait to see what's become of the script, and whether or not the characters from my imagination have been changed in significant ways. I'll admit, Barret's over-the-top voice acting seen in trailers and demos thus far has me worried, to a degree, but I'm still looking very much forward to see the end result for him and the rest of the cast. The same goes for Midgar city, a place known for its downtrodden slums in the shadow of the towering Shinra Electric Power Company building. I've only seen the inside of a Shinra power reactor, which is thematically dull compared to Midgar proper, so I still have a ton of questions about Square Enix's handling of the infamous city.

I want to believe that the years of apprehension on the development side was because the creators' expressed reverence for the original game is paramount. When they say they don't want to screw it up, I hope "it" refers to the creative opportunity, rather than FF7's brand value. So far, I'm admittedly giving them the benefit of the doubt because I want to see what they'll come up with, and because my early demo did a lot to convince me of the new battle system. Next year's release will be the first step in a long journey to recreate one of the most iconic games of all time, and I'm admittedly counting down the months until its March 2020 debut to see what's become of it after all these years [update: FF7 Remake has been delayed until April]. But if you're curious to pick up the game when it launches, head to our Final Fantasy 7 Remake pre-order guide for more details and links.

Did you guys really delete my comment for calling this “tee-ball journalism?” Because it is. It’s one thing to have the low-hanging fruit of a child writing about why he loves his dog. It’s quite another to have the same sentiment in a professional gaming journalist telling us why he is looking forward to arguably the most anticipated game of the decade. There is nothing inherently interesting about that concept. Nor does it require any real critical thinking for both the writer and readers alike.

I’m not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings but this isn’t a blogging website, guys. You can do better than this.

Given the high standards of storytelling these days, I have no confidence the current team from SE can create a compelling narrative for us to enjoy, so all we really have to go on is Sepiroth's VA performance and the combat system, as that for me, will make or break the game.

And yes, we all should be discussing SE's very greedy decision to split to the game up into parts a lot more, and it worries me the mainstream sites are completely ignoring this. SE's official reason is that it was necessary to achieve their "creative" vision for this game, which I think is absolute BS! This was a corporate decision disguised as a creative one.

It's fine to add more content, but make the base game first, then add the rest as optional DLC so those who just want to experience the original story can do so without having to fork out multiple sets of 60 USD over the years.

@Tangsta03: FF7 is pretty big though, I think of it more like the Mass Effect Trilogy (squished into one it could be as lengthy as FF7) or the dot hack series

I would have preferred to have the remake as one big package but, like the folks in DQB2 said "Three small projects are a lot more manageable than one big complicated one"

End of the day, when the final product(s) come out, we can see if it was worth splitting it into parts (whether or not corners were still cut)

@masato_indou: Content wise, FF7 was standard RPG fare for its time and is actually contant-bare for today's standards - a standard playthrough is 25-40 hours. Compare it with any AAA RPG these days and it pales in comparison (barely any side content).

If they were purely remaking the original, it can be easily done as a single release and they would even have to add in extra side content just to keep the playtime above 40 hours.

End of the day, when the final product(s) come out, we can see if it was worth splitting it into parts (whether or not corners were still cut)

My concern has nothing to do with this. This is a ploy to force gamers to spend more money they need would otherwise in order to get the full story.

FF games are generally standalone releases, with complete stories. This will mark first time in the franchise's history that we have to play through multiple full length games to get the full story. So you can't just get away with playing the first release, because the story is incomplete. It's episodic gaming at its worst.

Any creative justification for this is nonsense and is just there to mask what is simply an exercise in profit maximisation. If this was EA producing the game and it being any other franchise, we'd all be up in arms about it. But our love for FF7 is blinding us from the corporate greed at play here.

@Tangsta03: Considering some of the original FF7 team is back for this, I'm not that worried. I didn't say I'm not worried, just not that worried lol.

Sometimes when I see how excited people are for this, I feel like the confused person who doesn't get the joke everyone else is laughing at. I enjoyed it when it first came out. I also enjoyed FFVIII and IX as well. Good games, but I never got the fervor surrounding this particular one. I totally recognize that I'm in the minority here, and I'm not insulting the game by any means. I'm just saying I don't get the absolute longing to play it again.

I'm not sure a game could have more red flags. I'm just waiting for the next delay announcement.

I'd be a lot more excited if they were actually releasing the whole game, rather than a third of it.

As it is, I have no desire to play a game that won't actually conclude, so I'll start getting excited about it around the time the third part releases if the the first two parts are actually good.

Considering SE's downward trend of FF games, from XIII to XIII-2 to Lightning returns to XV, I won't allow myself to be suckered into excitement for any of this until it actually manages to prove itself.

@consolehaven: i (and many others) believe it is the worst FF ever. However, seeing that you loved it, i have to admit i am glad that the approach SE took paid off for a part of their target customers. For real, like @dancingcactus said, to each their own and i fully respect your opinion.

@consolehaven: To each their own.

There was a lot about FF XV i almost really liked, but in the end, the only really good thing I can say about it was that it looked really good. Top-notch graphics and a beautiful world.

@dancingcactus: @dancingcactus: well, the thing about the particular brand of RPG FFXV finds itself in is that when it came to random battles people end up spamming the A button. So, in my mind, holding A to attack and have stuff happen contextually made perfect sense. I loved the chemistry between the characters and the beginning especially had me hooked.

can anyone that played this demo confirm if it’s like ffxv gameplay? is it clunky and buggy like assassins creed?

I could not enjoy ffxv at all because of this.

I don’t see why it can’t be turned based with new mechanics and updated graphics.

i hope it stays to a true jrpg rather than an action game catered to younger generations and the west
