Final Fantasy 7 Remake Demo, Release Date, Gameplay, Differences, And Everything We Know

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake arrives March 2020, with a new battle system and a high-end collector's edition.

[Editor's Note] This piece originally stated a Final Fantasy VII Remake demo would launch alongside the game. This was an incorrect assumption on GameSpot's part and we regret the error. A demo was officially released on March 2, 2020.

Can you believe that Final Fantasy VII Remake is happening? After a tech demo of the opening of Final Fantasy VII was teased at E3 2005, fans were ravenous over the prospect that one of the most popular and beloved RPGs of all time would be getting a completely modern remake. 1997, even back then, seemed like an eternity ago.

Now Playing: The Final Fantasy 7 Remake Demo Intro Has Leaked - GS News Update

But Square Enix kept us waiting for a long time--it wasn't until E3 2015 that Sony officially announced that a full-blown remake was a real thing. It would be co-directed by series veterans Tetsuya Nomura and Naoki Hamaguchi, produced by Yoshinori Kitase (director and co-writer of the original FFVII) and would be released in an episodic nature.

We know that it's going to be a completely modern overhaul of the original game created from scratch, and will tell the same story with the same characters and locations that fans remember. However, whereas the original game featured a fixed camera and turn-based battle system, the remake will take the form of a third-person game with a free-roaming camera and real-time combat.

For the longest time, we only got quick peeks at remade scenarios, but 2019 gave us a much better look at the highly anticipated game. The game was finally playable at expos, we got an in-depth look at the new battle system, and we now have a clearer idea about how much content we could expect from the first release. But be aware, it's not coming quite as soon as expected--Square Enix has announced a delay to Final Fantasy VII Remake that will push its release date back to April 2020.

Announcement and Trailers

As stated, Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced at E3 2015 via a cinematic reveal trailer, which showcased Cloud walking through what appeared a market area. Another brief trailer followed during that year's PlayStation Experience and showed gameplay.

But then it was radio silence for quite some time. We didn't get a chance to see the game again until Sony's State Of Play presentation in May 2019 where Square revealed a new trailer of Final Fantasy 7 Remake--the first time we'd seen new footage of the game in quite some time, which gave us the first glimpse of Aerith and the revamped battle system.

During E3 2019, Square Enix detailed Final Fantasy 7 Remake's combat new combat system and allowed us to go hands-on with a playable demo, which involved leading Cloud and Barret through an early section of the game, culminating in a boss fight with the Guard Scorpion. It impressed us greatly, making us realise that the game was shaping up to give us something better than we wanted.

In a trailer released during Tokyo Game Show 2019, we got a look at Tifa and Aerith in action as party members, as well as a look at a couple of the game's early summoning creatures, the icy Shiva and the firey Ifrit. We also got a taste of the English voice acting, and a first look at the new iterations of Shinra's hit squad, The Turks.

Most recently, we got a new trailer at the 2019 Game Awards, which focus on Cloud Strife's much-loved cool, calm, and collected personality.

New Release Date

Final Fantasy 7 Remake's release date is set for April 10, 2020 on PlayStation 4. (It had previously been due out in March, but in January, Square Enix announced a one-month delay.) However, we know that it's only a timed exclusive for Sony's console until March 2021, at which point it will potentially come to other platforms like PC and Xbox One. Heck, it could even launch on PS5 and Xbox One Series X by then!

Story And Characters / How Much Of The Original Will Be Included In The Remake?

We know that Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be split into multiple parts, each comprising of one part of the original game. Producer Yoshinori Kitase, who directed the original Final Fantasy VII on PlayStation, has previously said that the team doesn't know how many games the Remake will span.

However, we can expect the first part to involve the first part of Final Fantasy VII that takes place in the city of Midgar, as Cloud meets up with eco-resistance organisation Avalanche. The group is attempting to sabotage the reactors that power the city, owned by the nefarious Shinra Electric Power company. Kitase is quoted as saying, "We decided we're going to focus this game on Midgar and what happened in Midgar" and "we can't say anything more about the future games after that, because we don't know ourselves, really."

We've seen the new interpretations of party members Barrett, Tifa, and Aerith in the trailers released so far, as well as a look at the game's primary antagonist, Sephiroth. Fans who have played through the original game will probably know what to expect, given all this information.

Battle System

The combat system for Final Fantasy 7 Remake is an entirely new one to the series, combining elements from the original game with real-time mechanics from more recent entries.

How it works is that you'll essentially be moving and attacking with standard attacks in real-time, which will fill an Active Time Battle gauge. Once that gauge is charged up enough, you'll be able to slow down the action to cast magic, trigger special abilities, or use items.

However, Final Fantasy 7 Remake includes a "Classic" combat mode, where moving and attacking will be automated, and the ATB gauge will fill up on its own. In this mode, the only real thing you need to worry about is waiting for the executing commands when you're able to, making this more of a direct interpretation of the menu-based combat system seen in the original game.

How Big Will The Game Be?

While we're still unclear about how big the download size for the game will be for digital downloads, or how much room the install will take on your PS4's hard drive, we do know that the physical version will span two blu-ray discs, according to Square Enix.

When's The Demo Coming Out?

A demo for Final Fantasy VII Remake was released on the PlayStation Store on March 2, 2020.

Box Art

The Western box art for Final Fantasy 7 Remake is an updated version of the original US box art for Final Fantasy VII on the PlayStation, a big nostalgia play that is sure to appeal to fans who were around for the initial release.

In a welcome move, the cover art is reversible, with the Japanese box art on the other side--it features the logo on a plain background, as was the case with the original Japanese and PAL releases of Final Fantasy VII on PlayStation

Pre-Order and Collector's Editions

There are a bunch of different editions and pre-order incentives for Final Fantasy 7 Remake. All preorders will get the Chocobo Chick Summon Materia DLC, which hopefully is as cute as it sounds. If you pre-order from the Square Enix Store, and you'll receive double Members Rewards points. Best Buy is offering a $10 reward credit to My Best Buy members, and as usual, the PlayStation Store is offering a free, dynamic FF7 Remake PS4 theme with any pre-orders.

GameStop has an exclusive pre-order bonus that may be of interest to physical collectors--you'll get a serialized Shinra key card and collectible tin box (shown above). You'll get this bonus free when you pre-order either the standard or Deluxe edition of FF7 Remake.

The Deluxe Edition will cost $80 and includes:

I wrote this on the other FFVII article and am reposting in the hopes of getting some feedback:

I would like to express my doubts regarding this so called Midgar episode. To put it simply: this game will go beyond Midgar as a surprise factor. I believe it is all a marketing stunt. There is no sense in milking this game so aggressively as to just include Midgar in a full priced game. I think they want to fool everybody so that they can later harvest the surprises and fan appreciation. I am not saying this is bad, or that they are evil or anything of that sort. I am simply expressing my thoughts to the matter. Besides, the game spans two blu-ray discs.

To clarify, I have to say the game would still be episodic. Going beyond Midgar and into the open world would not mean full FFVII. The game would still reach an ending point. I also believe this ending point would be the ending of disc 1 (please don't spoil this ending if you reply, many have yet to play this game). It would be the perfect point to end the episode.

What do you guys think. Thoughts anyone?

Am I the only person who is going to find it funny once this project bombs and they never end up releasing the last part or two of the remake?

I mean, the first part is going to sell well, there's too much hype and marketing to let it not do great. But once it's out, people are going to realize just how little actual content is in the game for the price being paid. In the end they're trying to turn a single game into 3+ shallow games filled with meaningless bloat to justify splitting it up like this.

By the time the third part releases, sales numbers are going to be complete garbage and if they'd intended a fourth part or possibly even more, they won't be able to financially justify finishing the project.

Wow, I wonder how much crap they're going to cut out of the game to entice people to buy the deluxe editions? Starting to look like an overpriced episodic DLC-laden cash grab to **** over anyone with nostalgia. Maybe I'll pick up the "Super complete no really we promise this time game of the year version 4" in a decade or so when they get around to releasing the full game.

@maltnut: FF7 is my favourite game of all time and I'm in no rush for this remake. I'll pick it up only when it's a full game and available for PC. You only have yourself to blame if you get suckered into deluxe editions.

I was a huge fan of the original, and want to be excited about this. I promise. But can I really be the only one who sees this as a huge middle finger to fans? I mean, people say that Midgar took up about twenty percent of the original; that seems like a high percentage to me, but even then, we're looking at FIVE games here. Since Square Enix hasn't told us anything about the release date, we don't know when those are coming out, or even if they are. Think about it, nothing like this has been done before: How many games are there that 100% require you to have already played through another thirty hour game prior to playing it? How about two of them? Three of them? This is going to get exponentially harder to market and sell as each new installment comes out, and the potential number of gamers who can play it shrinks. And that thirty hours is a really conservative estimate; we're probably looking at a lot more. Furthermore, how is the console jump being handled? I own a PS4, but I can't afford to sink infinite time and money into this, if I have to get a PS5 for Part 2. For those of us who got addicted to the original game as children, we have families and jobs now; we can't afford to jump into a completely uncertain time and money commitment, with no assurances whatsoever.

I could be completely wrong here, but if Square Enix has some answers that would allay my fears, they sure aren't sharing. That is honestly insulting, and they're going to have to do better before they get my business.

@jeremy47: Midgar was about 10%, or 5 hours.

If they expand 10% of a game to a full game and the rest of the game gets expanded to the same extent, we're looking at 10 games. Most likely they won't do that though.

I think part 1 will have huge pacing issues because like I said, only a tenth of the story takes place here.

I am most happy to have read above about the classic mode ATB, I prefer less button mashing of FF15 and a more strategic cerebral feedback of using the right tactics at the right time taking advantage of a enemies weakness. I will probably try the remake normal way, but if it is a weird mess- at least we have the classic battle system. That is great news. Please Please, I hope the Materia system has not been changed that much.

@jenovaschilld: it's not going to be like the original's ATB.

All it does is take control of the fighting while the ATB bar fills up.

Considering how well the RPG physical editions hold up and often times rise in value, I would suggest buying the physical version over the digital one.

I love the box art edition, but it does not warrant confidence when it will be episodic, episodic like "don't nod" life is strange, the walking dead "tell tale series" if so then who cares about final fantasy 7 remake it's overrated anyways.

Those who have Xbox should probably be happy with the entire FF trilogy appearing on Xbox and pc also in game pass, so FF 7 remake isn't something to feel excited about after all if your dying to play FF 7 play the old one. Your not missing out on anything, hell play the psp version.

@Crazy_saharaI If work is slow, and weather is bad... $60 for a RPG video game doesn't seem to bad. Considering entertainment per hour / per dollar I've wasted more on much sillier shit. It has been many many years since I have played this game, I remember strongly of going through an office building looking through rooms, lockers, and then following a blood trail left by Sephiroth but you think was by the experiment REd 13. I thought to myself, the intensity is palpable and this is coming from a video game?!!? It was an emotion that was hard to believe. Not something you would normally get from games back in 97'.

Episodic and overrated ... probably, but I took my wife to the movie to see Cats I deserve something for me.

I find it irksome that it's taken years and years and years to finally get a remake, yet fans still have to wait years to get the full remake in totality. Absolutely irksome. Couldn't wait to get out of Midgar in the original every time I played it, and this first game is nothing but. It's kinda depressing there's no hope for seeing the outside world with this release.

I just hope that when they work on the second part of the game, they don't forget that outside of Midgar, its an Open World (Not big areas... but a full open world) and that we can have all the previous vehicles and chocobos we had in the original. and that they keep the path access for each colored chocobo the same as it was back then.. Those are critical aspects of the game that many of us (original FF7 gamers) want to have back in this remake.. Please no cutting corners, no Areas, no restrictions (like you currently did with the summons).

@jecht187: I'd be willing to bet that part two will involve just the first continent with Kalm, chocobo ranch, Fort Condor etc. Square will want to string it out if they can and I foresee four games being released before we see the full world map which will also mean no gold chocobo or airship until that final game.

@locke90: They'd be foolish not to have cross save between games. If it doesn't then it seems pointless in being FF VII at all.
