Final Fantasy 15's New PS4 Pro Patch Criticized, Watch How It Performs

"At this point, both the Xbox One and standard PlayStation 4 now provide a smoother experience."

The newest patch for Final Fantasy XV arrived on Monday, promising to add an improved frame rate on PlayStation 4 Pro. Digital Foundry tested the patch and found that it does not help the game achieve 60 frames-per-second consistently. Additionally, the patch removes removes the 30 FPS cap from the game's "Lite" mode on PS4 Pro, which results in a "highly variable level of performance."

"As of now, there is no longer a way to enjoy Final Fantasy XV with a smooth, stable frame rate on the PS4 Pro," Digital Foundry said in a new video (below), as spotted by and reported on by Polygon. "Your only options are bad frame-pacing at a higher resolution or a wildly unstable unlocked frame rate. That's it."

Final Fantasy XV lets PS4 Pro users choose between "Lite" and "High" performance modes. Before the new patch, the Lite mode made Final Fantasy XV run at 1080p/30fps. The High mode made the resolution jump to 1800p with checkerboard rendering. With the update applied, the Lite mode retains its 1080p resolution, but the frame rate runs at around 40-50 fps, the same marks as in November. Only when you're staring at the ground will the game reach 60 fps on Lite mode, apparently.

The High mode doesn't fare much better, it seems, and could be a step backwards. Overall, the standard PlayStation 4 and Xbox One editions of the game are a better choice for players looking for the best technical experience, the site said.

"At this point, both the Xbox One and standard PlayStation 4 now provide a smoother experience," Digital Foundry said. "PS4 still exhibits minor frame-pacing issues but the problem is less pronounced than the Pro's flagship high mode. Xbox One uses an adaptive v-sync solution that produces completely smooth frame-pacing throughout, leading to a stable experience. There is additional slowdown on Xbox One and a lower resolution overall, but at this point, Microsoft's system still provides the most consistent frame rate.

"In some ways, patch 1.05 actually feels like a retrograde step as opposed to a desirable upgrade."

For more on the new patch, watch the video above and read Digital Foundry's writeup here.

In other news, Square Enix recently reached out to ask fans what they wanted from Final Fantasy XV in the future. Announced updates include a change to the controversial Chapter 13 and a new character creation tool, while Japanese players recently received some wacky cup noodle hat DLC.

I don't care what digital foundry says. They're full of it. The uncapped frame rate ia still alot better looking than the locked 30fps on ps4 pro. I immediately noticed the difference when i switched to lite mode and it was a definite improvement

@el_spliffo: I'm usually somewhat particular about frame rates, but I'm with you. The unlocked lite mode feels great and it's a huge improvement to me.

@el_spliffo: Yes and no , it still has a slight stutter type effect , especially when running around in the wide open spaces.

It is definately not smooth, it is plenty fast and responsive just not smooth.

Looks like Sony screwed up again. Always trying to show up Xbox, but falls flat on it's face again. :(

@Flyin3lvl: PS4 can't either. Only does it in single-player not multiplayer. There is not a big difference. The differences aren't even noticeable to the naked eye. Destiny, for example runs at the same resolution 1080p 30fps on both systems. It looks and runs great on both.

I'm one of the ones who definitely prefers the unlocked frame rate. It still feels better than a locked 30 fps to me while it hangs out in the 40-50 range. If SE does listen to the complaints on this, I hope they will offer a simple option for a locked and unlocked frame rate... I'd imagine it would be pretty easy to implement.

@drumjod: That's terrible for it to be unlocked and having it drop to 40 from 60 making it a terrible experience for some.

@taylor_sparks: Based on the comments I'm reading, there seem to be quite a few people who prefer the unlocked 40-50 over a locked 30 fps. I'm getting the impression we might be the minority though...

This game is pretty good, but the frame rate on standard PS4 is a constant issue imo. It almost looks like they baked the animations at 24 fps and run the game at 30 fps. Definitely not smooth.

Come on Square Enix, that's pretty embarrassing. Hope they rectify this soon and this won't be a common occurrence in the future. I'll be getting FF15 on the Scorpio so hopefully everything's straightened out by then.

@fullyskully: digital foundry makes it sound like they broke the game but the uncapped frame rate is a definite improvement in ps4 pro. It is not a step back like they say.

Square Enix keeps screwing around with the Pro features. First the game launches and it's fine, they patch it and break the framerates, then patch it again fixing framerate but screwup the AA, they patch it again fixing the AA and then patch it again breaking framerate again. They need to stop constantly screwing around with it.

@dacontag: Me as well. The uncapped framerate feels a lot better to me and it seems to stay in the 40-50 range. I definitely prefer it to the locked 30.

Nice going SE. Sounds like they just closed their eyes, unlocked the framerate, and hoped for the best. Some code work may - just may - be needed here

Just fix the f*ing frame pacing issue on the Pro on High, and Lite modes. IF you can't get the framerate to 60 just keep it at 30, and fix the damn pacing.

"1080p resolution, but the frame rate runs at around 40-50 fps"

If DF want to go back to sub 30, go for it.

@Random_Matt: It should have been framelocked at 30 (or at least had an option for it) so that it's smooth and stable. Fluctuating between 40-50 is very jarring and annoying. If it's not gonna hit a stable 50-60 consistently, then just don't bother unlocking the framerate past 30.
