Ubisoft's shooter series gets savage; see more of it here.

Ubisoft has officially announced Far Cry Primal, a new entry in the first-person shooter series that takes players to the "savage Stone Age." It will be released worldwide on February 23, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, followed by a PC release in March.

Described as a "full-fledged single-player experience," Far Cry Primal is set in 10,000 BC, at a time when "massive beasts like the woolly mammoth and sabertooth tiger ruled the Earth." As Takkar, a hunter and last surviving member of his hunting group, players arrive in an area called Oros with the singular goal of survival.

"They will meet a cast of memorable characters who will help them push back and tame the dangers of the wild," Ubisoft explains. "Players will journey as the first human to tame the wilderness and rise above extinction.

"Along the way, they will have to craft weapons and tools partly from the bones of slain beasts, hunt for food, master fire, fend off fierce predators and face off agains other tribes to conquer Oros."

In the reveal trailer, which you can watch above, the player is seen bringing down a woolly mammoth using spears and arrows alongside other members of the hunting party, before a saberooth tiger pounces. Later on, members of a rival tribe can be seen attacking the player, who looks lost in a dense forest area.

Far Cry Primal creative director, Jean-Christophe Guyot, has said he believes the Stone Age is the perfect setting for the game.

“Far Cry usually puts you at the edge of the known world, in a beautiful, lawless, and savage frontier. The Stone Age is, in a way, the very first frontier for humankind; it’s the time when humans put a stick in the ground and claimed land for their own, the time when we started climbing the food chain. That came with conflict, against other humans of course, but also against nature itself."

Far Cry Primal is being developed by Ubisoft Montréal, in collaboration with Ubisoft Toronto, Ubisoft Shanghai Studio, and Ubisoft Kiev Studio. The company has released a developer diary, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how Far Cry Primal came together.

Far Cry 4, the last numbered entry in the series, outperformed expectations for Ubisoft, which said interest in the game was the strongest in franchise history and revealed it sold substantially more than Far Cry 3.

Ubisoft chief executive Yves Guillemot has previously said Far Cry will be one of the company's tentpole franchises for years to come.

"The Far Cry franchise is here for the long-run and is a stronger contender in the shooter genre," he said.

Every game needs both 1st & 3rd person view, I personally would like to buy this game day one but won't bc 1st person kills it for me.

I like it! Something new and fresh. I'm worried that the lack of diversity in weapons will be a problem. Maybe if there's more focus on stealth? Anyway I applaud them for trying to do something new. I'm very interested.

cool base concept.

BUT it need a twist!, there is just no way this can hold the attention of alot of people, if you have to run around banging mammoths on the head with a club and upgrade it to a slightly bigger club.

stoneage weapons just wont cut it for the entire story.

This looks like the first far cry game I may enjoy. Bought FC3 on steam and got bored extremely quickly.

Id be down if it were an expansion length at a reduced price. Otherwise this looks like it could get boring quick.

@3LVI5: +1. I loved FC3 and it was an exclusive play until it was finished. I thought FC4 was boring as hell. It never grabbed me. I didn't care about anything going on and it just felt like the same thing over and over again. I wanted to like it and sunk about 30 hours into but I just never finished it. I too am baffled by this since FC4 is pretty much the same as FC3. I also got quickly bored with Blood Dragon.

This Primal game looks weak too. Seems like those Shangri la missions, which I also hated. I will give it a look when it comes out tho. Assuming I'm not too busy playing Fallout.

@3LVI5: Far Cry 4 was pretty much Far Cry 3 with a different setting and some additional cool stuff. How could that be any worse?

@depman1972: It's called difference of opinion - not "hate".

I completed Far Cry 3 on all difficulty settings on PS3 in addition to completing it on PC. Far Cry 3 was fresh, unexpected and innovating, where FC 4 felt rushed and not nearly as well written. I'm all about high-quality games, but something about FC 4 made me lose interest fairly quickly, and even though I've tried returning to it from time to time - I never get hooked.

Well im a sand box gamer whether it be rpg or action. So no. Back to drawing board on this one. If this is the future of gaming, trying to cleverly decontent your games, not to start a console war, i own both. But that xb1 is looking sweeter and sweeter come one month. Ill be having fun in entertaining far crys.

This isnt the game that the assassins creed creator was working on? They sound remarkably similar. Are they just trying to hose his game by putting out something remarkably similar right before? I am really confused by all this. Take 3 years, make me a decent far cry. Not every new game needs to be packaged under a known brand. Just like hardline, this will only embarass series. Rockstar and cdpr formula. Not wal mart formula. Its not hard. Quality. Decent games. In ubisofts case better mission design.

Hmmmmm-- Im sort of interested in this because Far Cry has been a quality game ive enjoyed, but i have to agree with those who wonder how much fun it will be to use only primitive weapons for a whole game. I, like many others, enjoy my guns, rocket launchers, and modern tech. A whole experience based around stone age tools seems like a difficult sell.

I need more information before i can fairly judge "Primal", but im definitely not excited about its theme.

I'm actually super intrigued for this game . Huge far cry fan. Far cry 3 was the best IMO. Really skeptical like many others how this will pan out tho. It's pre-historic timeline , so I really don't know how I feel yet about navigation(no cars) obviously . Lack of actual shooting. Other than a crossbow which btw wasn't invented during this time line either. Interesting concept but will def wait a while to see actual gameplay and reviews before I even consider picking this one up .

I can play this exact game right now... It's called Far Cry 4... I use the bow and arrow and hunt the elephants. This is the same game as Far Cry 4 just re-skinned and less weapons. How else do you guys think they were able to create this game so fast since the last one. I am differently not getting this one.

@rsly75: Ubisoft has many studios so this game was probably already being worked on while Ubisoft was promoting Far Cry 4.

If far cry 4 felt "boring" to you. And youre looking forward to this. Maybe ubi can hire you as a concept guy once this one loses his job when this game recieves a 5.5 and tanks. Or maybe ubi will have learned an important lesson about concepts in theory and in practice.

Being a huge far cry fan i rushed to this article to be dissapointed. Its like taking a giant sandbox and dumping out the sand. All youre left w is box. Sounds like a great idea until you start to think what you can and cant include wo turning it into a saints row game. Pretty much nothing and there is the reason why this is a horrible idea. Some people are great at knowing if games will be good, i would like to humbly think i belong in that group since i preordered every goty contender for 2015 almost exclusively w no crap except watchdogs. And i have a hard time imagining how you reinvent a far cry game into a primitive setting w NO tech and it just sounds like collect and hunt. Collect and hunt. Minecraft basically. Hitman isnt tryin to go primitive and if they did it would be horrible bc it is a giant sandbox too. Sometimes i wonder if these settings they chose dont have a hidden and very real benefit of basically being able to lay off whole teams of weapons artists and physics guys. Now they need to focus on two things. Knife combat and bows. Much easier game to design. Weve seen it w ea and battlefield and i wonder if ubi is following suit. While they fail at games like this they couldve been doing far cry ww2 pacific or something like that and increased the amount of sand in box instead of turning over. You can select a new and exciting time. Just has to have something to go on in it. On the plus side involving this news. Theyre always trying to get us to complete a mission using the fire engine only. Now that will be your third and last way to kill everytime. Bow knife fire. Complex game. Oh and a dino. Wow.

@bandcelks00024: Maybe you just aren't creative enough to see all the possibilities this game has. Bow knife Fire? There can be bombs as well. What about a system of building or crafting different kinds of traps? there are a lot of possibilities just in the trap category. I can think of a few off the top of my head. And why not add some magic? haha. an old sage could teach you his ways. That wouldn't be completely out of bounds for the series with some of the skills you could get in past games.

I think this game could be awesome. It just depends on what the developers do with it and how creative they can be. I was disappointed with far cry 4, it kind of just felt like an expansion pack to far cry 3. Which is why like the idea of a fresh new setting like this.

Also, If they really worked on a bow skill tree, I think that could be pretty epic. Faster draw, flaming arrows, poison arrows, triple shot, charged shot, explosive arrows, and whatever the hell else you can think of.

Does this mean that next year's Assassin's Creed will take place in cave man times too? Seriously though, actually is a pretty cool concept for FC. I really like FC4 but didn't play FC3 so it wasn't as repetitive for me.

@kilgore: I agree with you in a less sarcastic manner :) Although I love the idea of hunting animals, there just isnt depth to it in video games. But I am glad they are venturing away from being a shooter. FC4 was boring after the shock and awe of its awesome graphics wore off.

Ubi want to make somthing like Blood Dragon, but based on FC4 and...mamooth? This can work, but not necessary. Idea its not so bad, but why everywhere put stone age? I dont get it. Better option is to make or start to make FC5..or this is a sandbox for new ideas? Who know:) I know for sure, that Sniper Ghost warrior 3 will breing sniping in games to the upper level. It will be harder, longer with many ways of doing tasks and will have open world. Tahts sound good, but after movies i can say it looks amazing. Oh, and it will be released in 2016:)

I've no interest in games based around environments that completely lack modern technology. FC4 was horribly repetitive, and the Co-Op was (as ALWAYS, even on a 2-person game), laggy and problematic as always. I can safely pass on this game and be assured that I'm not missing out on anything.

As it stands, the W3 Expansion and Fallout 4 are all I have to look forward to for the rest of the year... Good games, but slim pickings this year.
