Ubisoft has officially announced Far Cry Primal, a new entry in the first-person shooter series that takes players to the "savage Stone Age." It will be released worldwide on February 23, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, followed by a PC release in March.

Described as a "full-fledged single-player experience," Far Cry Primal is set in 10,000 BC, at a time when "massive beasts like the woolly mammoth and sabertooth tiger ruled the Earth." As Takkar, a hunter and last surviving member of his hunting group, players arrive in an area called Oros with the singular goal of survival.

"They will meet a cast of memorable characters who will help them push back and tame the dangers of the wild," Ubisoft explains. "Players will journey as the first human to tame the wilderness and rise above extinction.

"Along the way, they will have to craft weapons and tools partly from the bones of slain beasts, hunt for food, master fire, fend off fierce predators and face off agains other tribes to conquer Oros."

In the reveal trailer, which you can watch above, the player is seen bringing down a woolly mammoth using spears and arrows alongside other members of the hunting party, before a saberooth tiger pounces. Later on, members of a rival tribe can be seen attacking the player, who looks lost in a dense forest area.

Far Cry Primal creative director, Jean-Christophe Guyot, has said he believes the Stone Age is the perfect setting for the game.

“Far Cry usually puts you at the edge of the known world, in a beautiful, lawless, and savage frontier. The Stone Age is, in a way, the very first frontier for humankind; it’s the time when humans put a stick in the ground and claimed land for their own, the time when we started climbing the food chain. That came with conflict, against other humans of course, but also against nature itself."

Far Cry Primal is being developed by Ubisoft Montréal, in collaboration with Ubisoft Toronto, Ubisoft Shanghai Studio, and Ubisoft Kiev Studio. The company has released a developer diary, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how Far Cry Primal came together.

Far Cry 4, the last numbered entry in the series, outperformed expectations for Ubisoft, which said interest in the game was the strongest in franchise history and revealed it sold substantially more than Far Cry 3.

Ubisoft chief executive Yves Guillemot has previously said Far Cry will be one of the company's tentpole franchises for years to come.

"The Far Cry franchise is here for the long-run and is a stronger contender in the shooter genre," he said.

It's going to be really odd if the characters in this game speak English.

@Bleak5170: English would be strange to hear but we can surmise that humanoids had a language. I don't think I would want to hear ugs and grunts for 40 hours or so and therefore, on that basis, I will be okay with English.

@gotrekfabian:

Yeah I'm torn between wanting authenticity and having a story which actually makes sense. I'm 100% confident these early humans will be speaking perfect English and I think that will take me out of the story, (even though it makes sense from a game play perspective).

@CieloPerso: That is offensive to us Neandertals. Therefore it can't be in the game. We are a small minority but we have hairy chests to make up for it.

Interesting idea my thing is that the game will have the same formula that the Farcry games have had since Far Cry 3. Find a tower climb it reveal the map or something along those lines. I will wait to see more gameplay before I judge but for right now I have no interest in another Far Cry game.

Not sure I get this. The fun of Farcry is the weapons and vehicles and sneaking into outposts. Not sure how bow and arrows and a spear are going to be much fun.

This is a really cool idea, and I applaud them for trying something different.

That being said... I don't know how I feel about this... The main reason I play Far Cry is because I can customize a pistol, and then run in and head-shot left and right while using the iron sights...

I have no doubt that this will be an entertaining entry, but it certainly won't have the same feeling as the others.

One area they could explore in this game is aliens. All those hieroglyphics that theorist say are documentation of the early cave man coming in to contact with visitors from another world. That hook could give the game its shock moment like discovering those weird monkey monsters in the first Far Cry.

Im confused, do I build my sniper rifle out of sticks and stones? Or maybe a cashe of weapons gets dropped at my feet by a wormhole created by aliens from the future.

I mentioned this elsewhere. I'm actually glad Ubi is taking a risk w/ this franchise. Too many times devs play it safe with the FPS genre, this looks like an exciting title that im ready to get my hands on..

I am HYPED !!!! Love the FC series of games. In fact, this franchise is the only decent one from Ubisoft. Loved all games from FC 1. I admire Ubisoft for this new direction. It's going to be interesting how they implement a 'shooter' without guns. I am sure it's going to be machetes, spears, axes etc all kinds of ancient melee weapons. I would also like to know if we can tame/ride animals - mammoths, sabre-tooth cats etc. Exciting times !

Hmm it looks very interesting to me. However i believe it should have been done with a new ip. The far cry series has always been about guns and explosions. Now to introduce no guns and no explosions onto it seems to me like it would be rather bland, it still looks interesting to me so im not saying it couldn't be a good game but i think slapping the far cry name on it might be a mistake.

Far Cry with similar animals (Mammoth/Elephant; Tiger/Sabretooth), but without the guns and vehicles? I dunno, I'm gonna need something else to get me excited. The dream sequences in FC4 were fun in spurts but I don't think I'd enjoy an entire game of them.

@jeg_09: Far Cry sells. It's like when Team Silent created Silent Hill: The Room. The game was initially meant to be a spin-off of Silent Hill called Room 302, that alone though wouldn't have sold like an established franchise would have so Silent Hill was slapped on. This is likely similar and UbiSoft have form for this as they did with Assassins Creed: Black Flag, it was a pirate game with some AC elements tacked on so it would sell more. So while this is a Far Cry game and may share a few elements, I think this is more their answer to games like ARK and The Forest just with a more controlled AAA approach.

Woaw they deviated so much from the "far cry" series. Why not just start a new ip ? Oh i get it. They want to sell it on the "Far Cry" name only. But the real question is : Will the characters talk with english accents?

All I ask is that they make models and animations--especially takedowns--new from the ground up. FC4 literally copy pasted 90% of 3's assets. It's why so many people think of 4 as too similar to 3-- because they're right.
