Fantastic Four Cut a Big Action Sequence, Here's Why

Key trailer moment featuring The Thing deleted from movie

One of the biggest criticisms of the recent superhero flop Fantastic Four was the messy structure and confusing ending, which suggested considerable studio interference. The trailer included numerous moments that never made it into the final film--which isn't unusual in itself, as trailers are often put together before films are entirely finished.

No Caption Provided

However, one moment seemed to originate from a major action scene. We see The Thing, leaping from a high-tech aeroplane into some sort of army base, before being blasted by machine guns. It's a key moment in the trailer, and not usually the sort of thing that gets completely cut from movies of this type.

Now Entertainment Weekly have revealed exactly what that scene was, and why it never made it into the movie. It was intended to bridge the gap between earlier sequences in which the team gain their powers and the 'one year later' time-jump that forms the end of the movie. It's a scene in which The Thing--now working for the US government--invades a Chechen rebel base and takes out the enemy mercenaries before US soldiers move in to the finish the job.

According to EW, director Josh Trank was forced to cut this scene before production even began, in order to reduce the budget. However, when Fox executives realised that the film wasn't exactly filled with action, they agreed to finance the sequence--but without Trank's involvement. Unfortunately, the resulting footage, shot by a second unit, looked so different from the rest of the film that it had to remain on the cutting room floor.

Here's the trailer from Fantastic Four--moments from this missing scene can be seen at 2:09 and at the very end.

I don't see the point in hiring a director to make a movie then cutting a load of key scenes out. If the studio is going to do that, then why don't they hire someone internally to direct the film, rather than dragging another director's name through the dirt because of decisions they've made? Josh Trank did a brilliant job making Chronicle, and Fantastic Four should have been a much better movie. These studios just need to trust that the directors know what they're doing and let them get on with it, without interfering, before production, during production or after. Otherwise you end up with a hack job of a film, like this one.

Basically, they did a heel-turn and went along with that action scene anyway, but it turned out to be a waste of time and money (much like the entire movie, haters would say). That's what you get when executives meddle without input from the director.

If people would stop going to their movies, maybe that evil company known as FOX will finally do one thing good in it's miserable life and sell the rights to mutants and the Fantastic 4 over to Disney, who can actually make good superhero movies, like The Avengers.

If your going with a different vision then they should have just let the director make the movie he wanted.

The problem is...we have had an overdose of Marvel movies in recent years. Marvel needs to take a page out of DC's book.....one movie every year or two.

@funkyzoom: Umm, you do realize DC is going to start releasing multiple movies starting next year like Marvel, right? Do some research.

@pound-u: I do know what you are saying and I HAVE done my research. But I can't comment on what might happen in the future regarding DC. My comment was based on what's happened until NOW.

@funkyzoom: It is but the movie isn't a marvel movie; it was made by Fox who owns the movie rights for Fantastic 4 from Marvel. So technically, it is a Fox movie.

here is an idea, just stay true to the story of the characters... cast people that would actually be believable as those superheroes and stage some cool not over the top action and you have a summer blockbuster.

I've read from multiple different sources related to this project that the responsibility for the quality of this movie rests solidy on Josh Tranks shoulders. With his first film being the (excellent) indie movie Chronicle, going to this tent pole studio film for his 2nd directors job proved to be his undoing. It sounds like the talent is there, but the maturity isn't- he is a very young 31 year old, that was experiencing the spotlight effect of being one of Hollywoods favorites, and the money that comes with it. It sounds like he also developed a bit of a drug dependency/addiction along with it. He was described on set as being "isolated" "non-communicative" and "aloof." Basically, not the qualities of leadership you need to have when helming a 100 million dollar project.

Jeezus Fox sucks. Fox and Sony keep trying to make superhero movies, only to make them even worse than the previous ones. They're not creative, talented, or intelligent as they can't seem to learn from their mistakes.

Maybe Trank really isn't at fault for how terrible the movie is, if the studio was cutting it up so much.

@cfscorpio: I honestly can't stand any of FOX's superhero movies, all have poor plot with holes big enough that Galacticus can fit through.....plus their versions of characters is retarded....if they aren't the main cast usually they are 2 dimensional.....

in the comics Senator Kelly is a primary political adversary as is Henry Peter Gyrich.....

NO, first Class was a reboot cus they know they funked up on Origins Wolverine, completely retconned the whole original trilogy.......and we still follow this trash???? ugh

The studio clearly had no idea what they wanted or were getting out of this film until it was too late. That is of course because they only made this film to hold onto the Fantastic Four movie rights. FOX deserves every bit of criticism over this movie and every dollar lost. They should apologize to the fans.

Marvel should buy the rights back as a show of good faith and reverence for the Fantastic Four. It's fans have been dragged through the mud long enough. Of course they'd have to shelve it for years due to the irreparable damage done to the franchise. The immediate benefit to Marvel would be the ability to incorporate The Skulls, SIlver Surfer or Galactus into their Universe for maybe Guardians of the Galaxy 2 or Infinity War.

-.- This movie had so much potential. Why, oh why can't studios stay out of these kinds of affairs? You'd think they'd havelearned their lesson after the fiasco that was Spiderman 3. Well, now that they lost all the money they could have made on this and any future sequels due to word of mouth, maybe they'll keep their 'genius' ideas out of it next time. Idiots.

A messy production often leads to a terrible film. Fantastic Four's poor result stems from a company that doesn't seem to know what to do with the property, and when they do end up making a film, they make mistakes. FOX needs to sell this property stat. They clearly have no idea what they're doing with it. Let Marvel give it a try.

This is what happens when Marvel isn't involved. Only X Men movies are good without Marvel's involvement (and the first 2 Spider Man).

I still don't think this was entirely 20th Century Fox's fault...I mean the last Xmen movie was great along with the first 2. There's probably something about Josh Trank that makes him difficult, if not impossible to work with. Now that this movie is a bust i'm interested in seeing how they will do the sequel since they don't want to lose the movie rights to Marvel.
