Fan-made Half-Life remake Black Mesa will be sold as a commercial product

"We believe we can make the game even better by having full access to the Source engine," says the developer.

Community made Half-Life remake Black Mesa will become a commercial product sold on Steam.

After being one of the first projects to pass through the company's Greenlight process, Valve has given the team its blessing to sell the fan-made Half-Life remake. "Black Mesa has been given the opportunity to be sold as a retail product on Steam," reads an update for the game.

"This is an incredible honor--one we never expected--but also one we found hard to accept."

"We never developed Black Mesa with money in mind. Our team is made up of average, hardworking people, and no one joined the team to make money. For us, Black Mesa is purely a labor of love. We believe this philosophy has significantly contributed to the overall quality and feel of the game."

"Our decision to sell Black Mesa rests on two key points. One is we believe we can make the game even better by having full access to the Source engine. This lets us tackle and fix limitations instead of working around them. The second is because frankly, our team could really use the financial help."

The game will be available "soon" on Steam for a "relatively low price," but the development team says it's not looking to drop support for the free version of the game.

"In fact, shortly after the Steam release there will be a completely new free version of the game. We also plan to open source our maps and some game assets to the modding community!"

"Purchasing the Steam version of Black Mesa is more about supporting the team and our efforts than anything else. However, the Steam version will include features that the free version simply can not have. We will be paying careful attention to feedback, and you'll have a very real say in how the final game turns out."

One of the updates down the line is the addition of Xen, Half-Life's concluding chapter that is absent from Black Mesa. "Please be patient with us as we work to make Xen a stunning and worthy conclusion to Black Mesa. Until Xen is completed, we have multiple interesting additions planned for the Steam version of Black Mesa, which we will announce later on down the road."

I'll never forget the moment that countdown clock at blackmesasource.com reached 0 and the entire server was overloaded with traffic, the mod was so popular the site was almost inaccessible for over an hour, and I've never hit the refresh button so many times in my life!

From memory, it was around 3am in Australia when Black Mesa Source went live, I was awake all through the early hours of the morning waiting for it to download via a P2P network, as I assume thousands of others were too in Australia, suffice to say, it was an amazing experience seeing all the updates and changes they'd made, and surprises they'd thrown in to keep it fresh, all while keeping extremely close to the vision of the original and improving it...I didn't get any sleep that day...

xD

I will definitely be buying the full thing to show my support for this project. The love and dedication that team put into this is leagues beyond anything I've ever seen in a mod, I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished re-design of Xen and playing through those last couple of levels. :)

I came here to see the insensitive and asinine comments but have yet to find any. And because I just finished writing a review of Black Mesa.

I'll be happy to buy this as a commercial release once Xen is in it. Right now its just an unfinished (though awesome) mod.

They don't need to be so humble; there's nothing wrong with getting paid for your talents and labor. I suspect they'll be pleasantly surprised to see how many people are willing to support their endeavors with a purchase of the paid version of the game.

This is the type of philosophy that the rest of the industry should embrace. I know industry giants such as Electronic Farts or Micro$haft would never allow their fans to make a complete working remake of their earliest games and sell them.

Man, it gives me such pleasure to see all these comments about "supporting the devs". That's something that I see only in PC gaming. The fact that Steam allows an almost direct link between gamer and devs is awesome.

It's good that they're able to make some money out of all their hard work, but I like mods to stay free. They'd have to add something worthwhile to justify the cost, because a free mod can be as good or bad or weird as it wants to. However, when there's money involved, everything changes. Perhaps I'm spoiled with getting great content for free, but whenever someone asks for money you get to have some expectations and demands.

What could they add? MP? Trading Cards? Steam Achievements (they had achievements in their game but weren't steam synchronized), Steam Cloud? After playing that wonderful mod, giving them financial support via purchase seems like the best encouragement.:)

Will definitely buy to show my support. Black Mesa wasn't only one of the best Mods I've ever played, it was also one of the best remakes and games I have ever played.

But I do hope all the people that worked on it, even the ones that quit the project over time, get their fair share of the money.

Try to watch it without changing the original video size (don't change to fit browser or fullscreen).

It'll be awesome to play HL1 on the new engine, and replay the whole series.

I played this 13 years ago... I'm getting old...

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah, because it wasn't CS who created the shooter crazy in the 2000s. You do know that BF4 is basically CS + Unreal Tournament.

I really don't know why I waste time with you.

Good, I wanted to donate to them for the great work they've done over the years but it wasn't allowed. If they add Steam Achievements I will gladly buy the game and beat it again. (with or without the Xen level)

Long Live Valve.

Awesome! I'd totally drop cash for it. The team totally deserves it. You know, I actually never even finished the original Half-Life. The farthest I got was playing through Black Mesa actually, so I'm seriously waiting on Xen. I refused to play the original Half-life to finish the game. I want to complete the game through Black Mesa and then move onto Half-Life 2 which I got like half-way through a few years ago. I'm so looking forward to playing the full version of Black Mesa, and I'm seriously happy that I can pay the team to do so.

Good guy Developer. Makes free game for all, decides to make money off of free game, still makes the free version available. I'll buy the Steam version and support these guys. They'll sell it for really cheap.

In a way I'm a little pissed that they are charging for it. BUT! It's probably the best mod ever made. The team deserved to be paid for the work they did. Lets hopes it's ported over to the latest version of Source Engine. Engine port over giving a massive performance boost and Xen. Then they can have my money.

If they do this I'd really hope they clean up the bugs. Black Mesa was pretty great...but also spoiled terribly by a ridiculous number of crash bugs.

Surprising that another developer is using it, not that it looks so pretty. I figured that out the second I booted up Cinematic Mod for HL2. Makes Crysis environments look woefully inadequate in comparison to the art design.
