Fallout 4 PS4 Mods Have Some Serious Beta Issues

The problems right now include no sound file support and a storage cap of 900 MB; Bethesda also warns of memory and performance problems.

Fallout 4's mods launched on Xbox One in May and are coming to PlayStation 4 later this month. In advance of the release, Bethesda has pushed out a new update for Fallout 4's PC Creation Kit that prepares the game for an upcoming mods closed beta test on PS4.

PC players can download the latest update to get the ability to upload PS4 mods to Bethesda.net. However, as outlined on the Bethesda website, there are some known issues with PS4 mods to be aware of.

Now Playing: Todd Howard Talks Modding at Bethesda - E3 2016

These significant-sounding problems include sound files not working on PS4 and a mod storage limit of 900 MB. By comparison, Fallout 4 mods on Xbox One have a limit of 2 GB.

Another issue is Fallout 4 mods on PS4 may lead to memory and performance issues. For all the known issues, Bethesda said it is working with Sony to find solutions before Fallout 4's mods program is released in full on PS4.

No Caption Provided

Additionally, the Fallout 4 Creation Kit update now mandates that PC modders link their Steam account, while it also includes "general optimizations and bug fixes." You can see the full patch notes below.

NEW FEATURES AND FIXES

  • Uploading mods to Bethesda.net requires Fallout 4 ownership via a Steam-linked Bethesda.net account
  • General optimizations and bug fixes

KNOWN ISSUES WITH PS4 MODS

  • PC textures are used. Memory and performance issues may occur. We are working with Sony on optimal texture exporting support in a future update.
  • Sound files are currently not supported. PS4 sound format is a proprietary format. We are working with Sony on sound file processing support in a future update.
  • PS4 Mod Storage limit is approximately 900 MB at present. Please do not upload mods larger than 900 MB. We are working with Sony to increase this limit.

The closed beta for Fallout 4's PS4 mods is "close to ready," Bethesda said. If you create a mod on PC and upload it to Bethesda.net, you will be invited to the PS4 mods closed beta forums "to help with testing," the developer explained.

For more on Bethesda and modding, check out GameSpot's E3 2016 interview on the subject with Todd Howard in the video above.

Gotta love the morons blaming Sony when Bethesda has never been a staunch Sony ally. Ultimately, if you want a genuine modding experience get a damn PC and quit crying. Though I will relish mods on my platform of choice if they can be ironed out, I am not ignorant of the fact that mods started on, and thus work better with, PC.

@leo_boj: the Xbox One has a 2GB limit. You're not really going to be able to use substantial mods on either. If anything with the shitty optimization that Bethesda has given Fallout 4 on PS4 I appreciate Sony making sure that mods can't break/crash my game.

Well fellow ps4 owners, this sounds rather dissapointing doesnt it haha. I confess that when I hear a known memory issue in a Bethesda title my save files shudder in terror. Oh well, see what happens I guess

@BlazeKingz: They paid nothing and you can only assume and I do own a PS4 btw. Always goes to the lowest point when one can't get what they want, modding is not as easy as it is for the PC. They said they are working on it what more do you want? Just be patient, it will be worked out in due time. Do you know anything about programing for if you do, you can get your answer right now.

@lonewolf1044: the ps4 and xbone have almost identical archetecture exept ps4 has more powerfull parts. So tell me again why ps4 is being shown as the inferior platform in every way since before the launch of fallout 4. There was so much xbox merch and extras released by bethesda. What im saying is only sounding whiny when you dont know anything about the situation.

@BlazeKingz: Yeah, honesty would be refreshing from Bethesda. Why can't Todd just truly state the real reasons why Sony seems to get the shaft again and again? It's not like they claim the architecture this time in the PS4, so really what is the honest real reason?????

@duodu2000: Protip: 80% of anyone that would have ever bought Fo4 has bought it by now, with it going on tons of sales. They make their money on the Season Pass TBH, adding mods is to appease the existing customers, not to acquire new ones.

Wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft had a hand in this, they're hurting bad and they have been known for paid exclusivity.

I am sure that Micro$$ has nothing to do with why mods are released to Xbox one first, and Bethesda is continuing to have issues with DLC and mods on the PlayStation 4. Are these legit issues on the PlayStation 4 or did Microsoft pay off Bethesda for DLC and mods?

They're going to waste a lot of time getting this to work somewhat reliably. And with a 900MB cap on PS4 and a 2GB cap on XBOX One, I'm afraid the result will be underwhelming, especially when compared to PC. I know they're bound to raise the cap, but it doesn't sound like it'll be by much. My Wrye Bash Oblivion/Skyrim mod folders are above 50GB each (compressed). They shouldn't be wasting resources on this IMO.

@lonewolf1044: Yes, but I'd have preferred that they redirected their efforts into making better official DLC* for Fallout 4 and maybe fixing the CK. The Skyrim Creation Kit has a lot of broken features, some of which worked fine in previous versions (before expansions). It was the same with Oblivion, but thankfully, the Construction Set has now a wonderful community-made extender (Oblivion CSE) that fixes all major problems and continues to be updated regularly. TESV's re-release might prompt them to fix the CK, but after three years, they sure took their time.

* After all, we live in the same world as CDProjektRED. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine did happen.

@cherub1000: Yes, and I'm very careful with the modules I install, since I don't want my save files to get corrupted. Other, more adventurous users, may raise the memory footprint of their mod folders beyond the 100GB mark very easily, if they so desire.

It's cool Bethesda is putting mods on consoles but I can't imagine the troubles encourage them to continue doing it beyond Skyrim: Special Edition.

Perhaps these are signs of growing pains. Maybe it will be smoother in the future.

The problems they mention are the sort of thing that should have been ironed out ages ago... they aren't hard, they just need somebody to do the work (e.g. talking to Sony to work out the sound/texture formats).

I get the feeling from this that they didn't actually start working on PS4 mod support until very recently, and they've got like 1 or 2 guys on it...

I'm not interested in mod support if that only means the ability to load mods created by PC gamers with apparently gimped functionality. I want the actual creation kit on PS4 to make our own mods because I'm a creative person. The map editor in Far Cry 4 was the defining feature of this gen so far, because it handed true creative freedom to the console gamer via a very powerful editor.

The mod support Bethesda is offering is very lame. Todd Howard is never going to treat console gamers as equals and allow peasants to have the creation kit. Yes Sony have strict rules in place that limit storage space, but the texture and audio format is a bethesda problem because the creation kit should be outputting the correct formats when it's set to export a PS4 mod. What's the use exporting to a device if what you are exporting is not compatible. That's an example of Bethesda PC arrogance. They will export to PS4 but PS4 has to change in order to load them.

The Skyrim remaster is another example of Bethesda PC arrogance with Todd Howard enjoying rockstar status. Console gamers have to pay $60 for a remastered game they have already played in order to subsidise PC gamers who get the remaster free. The excuse is that the PC version was higher quality than the console version, yet the PC gamers never paid extra for that luxury. If the remaster is of no benefit to PC gamers, then don't port it to PC. If it is of value, PC gamers should pay for it, not be subsidised by console gamers.

@justerthought:You've obviously never even watched a tutorial on the creation kit. Todd Howard isn't a big ole meany PC elitist, he just knows what anyone who's ever used the CK knows: it won't work on consoles. Let me explain why

1. If you were to open the CK you'd see tons and tons of un-intuitively arranged spreadsheets. It would be a time-consuming hell to navigate with a controller. Many modifications--of say, racial powers in Skyrim--are done via drag and drop. The difficulty of this makes it almost certain that any mod you could make on console will be provided by PC users.

1A. On top of that, there's no way--even on PC--to undo accidental edits. Yes, you can set it back to it's original value, but now you have what's called an "identical to master record." It's bad. PC players can filter those out using a separate tool: FO4Edit. But that's not coming to consoles. (See point 5)

2. Many features would have to be gimped. The "render window" is really demanding and would likely lock up consoles.

3. **THIS IS THE BIG ONE** Most mods use tools beside the creation kit to make. You want to create a whole new armor? New weapon? New type of enemy? You need nifskope and photoshop or gimp. You want to make new dialogue? You need recording equipment and a sound editing program. You want to make new scripts? You need a text editor. Basically everything *new* requires something other than the CK.

4. For a lot of mods you need access to the file structure even if you want to use existing assets (for instance, if you want to replace the mesh for a recon scopes with the long scope mesh) you need access to the file structure.

5. It's not clear that Microsoft or Sony would even allow Bethesda to bring a new non-game program to their console. It's especially not clear that they'd do it if it required them to give allow access to the console's file-structure. (You could screw the console up that way.)

In short: the CK would be basically impossible to use, gimped beyond recognition and possibly not even allowed. It would be a ton of work for Beth to get it even into a controller navigatable gimped-to-hell hell-to-use state so they could provide it to people who know nothing about how it works and have no tutorials or existing community to help them along with it.

@RS13: More simply: if you're really creative enough that you want to make your own mods: buy the game on PC and make some. Even if the CK were provided on consoles, this would be sound advice: the time you'd save would outweigh the 60 bucks you'd lose by orders of magnitude.

@Ripper_TV: Except... He has no interest in mods if he has to depend on PC gamers for them. He'd still have to depend on PC gamers for actually good mods. And correct me if I'm wrong, aren't the map editors in FC multi-player centric? Either way he's asking Bethesda to create a whole new tool just so he make dumbed down mods.

Last generation, the excuse for poorer performance of Skyrim or Fallout 3 on the PS3 was understandable, because of the PS3's system Ram being half of the Xbox 360's.

This generation there is absolutely no excuse for this garbage. The PS4 uses faster DDR5 ram, and has a better GPU than the Xbox One. It proves that Bethesda prioritizes Xbox hardware over PlayStation. It's the f ucking truth, and Todd Howard can go suck one. Used to really admire this guy...not anymore.

@halvedlife: None of that has anything to do with the PS4 mod sound issues or limited 900MB storage for mods. Faster RAM and a better GPU won't change any of that.

Also, the poor overall performance of last gen Beth games on the PS3 has no correlation with getting mods to work on the PS4. You are conflating two issues that have nothing in common. Console mods are a new thing and this is relatively untested waters.

If Beth hated Sony that much they wouldn't have bothered trying to put mods on the PS4. The fact Beth is working to fix these issues evinces that they don't hate Sony hardware at all. Also Beth don't get to decide what the mod limit is, that's up to Sony. The storage limit could end up being raised when PS4 mods are officially released, ergo you are throwing a tantrum about something that might be resolved by the time you get mods.

People are quick to assume this is all Bethesda's fault and that it's some conspiracy. Those same people don't stop to think that this might also be on Sony as well.

@simonbelmont2: No Bethesda doesn't hate Sony, The pre-order of Fallout 4 on the Xbox one gets a free copy of fallout 3. fallout 3 DLC came to the Xbox first. Fallout 4 mods come to the Xbox one first, and Far Harbor DLC on the PlayStation 4 came with issues. Bethesda doesn't hate Sony. Bethesda and Microsoft have a strong relationship because of exclusivity deals.

It was stuck at like box shape 1200x900 or something. With no option to change resolution to even 1080p. Now im stuck at a spot where i have no ammo andbgotta fight that huge creature lol

It's always the SAME crap with any competition against M$. Apple doesn't have games on it's system but is available on M$. Suspiciously, you have to buy/subscribe to software from M$ & or their official website to make it run games on Apple. Then there's Playstation. PS doesn't get even the most popular games,/DLC on time, or they're buggy compared to M$'s. Yet all games, & DLC for Playstation, when it's exclusive to Playstation, or when M$ isn't looking, those games/DLC will run just fine. I never noticed all this until BUG-thesda's Fallout 3, and Elder scrolls' Oblivion games came out BETTER with more DLC, then Ps had. Yet, it was running TERRIBLE on 360. It was definitly rushed.

You guys can't believe they don't sabotage at least some of these games...

It always looks to me like M$ can't stand competition.

Ever since M$'s console came on the scene, games don't all the sudden run well on PS. I've been playing games since BEFORE M$'s "ME TOO" console was on the scene. There's was such respect for what PS does. They made great games, & great memories. M$ saw a money opportunity, and they pounced. I could see why. Around the time, they released Their Me2 Console in 2001, they were getting SUED by the United States & Eurpeon Union & being labelled as an "Abusive Monopoly"! HA! They're not in it for the games. If they were, they would've been in the games & console division from the beginning. It was thanks to Playstation/Nintendo to show them, this is a money making industry. When the other gaming companies fell out of existence (Atari, Sega) They still didn't show up on the scene. When Sony broke off with with Nintendo, & made a VERY successful name brand for themselves, ALL the sudden M$ is interested in making gaming consoles. Sony has been around since the 40's. YES! Founded on May 7th 1946!!! Sony KNOWS what it is doing. The fact that Sony would ever have problems is bull. To top it off, Sony's console is 6 years older then M$'s. Even releasing a console a year apart makes a difference when it comes to how successful a console will be compared to your competitor's.

I don't see how a company can do WORSE with it's products, as it gets more experience, not better. To make more mistakes?! VERY odd.

And at the same time...conveniently, enough (as usual for M$) I don't see how your competition can do better, when they're the fumbling noobs on the scene.

I'm just going to throw this out there: I think M$ hates creativity SO much from their greatest competition (Playstation) that it might have messed up our getting Silent Hills.

I think this game could've single-handedly done a lot of "damage" to the minds of M$'s biggest fanatics. Making them cross over to PS. PS has the upper hand, & has millions of games at it's disposal, to re-make. That will always be M$'s greatest threat. lol

Does this mean Skyrim, will be a hot mess?! Probably. Hell, they can even rush the hell out of it on M$'s console as well as PC!!! Buyer beware.

@Faye_Tallity: Supposedly, MS had been wanting to get into the console business for some time, but had no luck until Sega came asking for an OS. Can't remember which book or interview I read, but some Sega guys said that MS was asking a lot of questions when helping with the DC, but they didn't think anything of it until the Xbox was announced.
