Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update Out Now, See The Patch Notes

The 2015 RPG gets a major update.

Fallout 4's long-awaited free next-gen update is rolling out today, April 25, ushering in performance and quality improvements to help the 2015 RPG look and perform potentially better than ever. Bethesda is calling this a next-gen update, though the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles have been on the market since 2020.

The highlight of the update are performance and quality mode options. When players select "Performance" mode, they'll run the game at up to 60fps with 4K resolution via dynamic scaling. On "Quality" mode, the game runs at 30fps at 4K (without dynamic scaling).

This update is not yet available for those who obtained Fallout 4 through the PlayStation Plus collection. It's unclear if that is intended or some kind of logistical bug, but GameSpot has reached out to Bethesda for clarification. It is, however, going to be available for PS Plus Extra/Premium members.

The next-gen patch for Fallout 4 was announced back in 2022 and was originally set to debut in 2023 before Bethesda delayed it to 2024. It arrives today not long after Prime Video's Fallout TV show arrived and helped lead to a resurgence in Fallout player numbers. Presumably this next-gen update will draw more players back to Fallout 4 or encourage them to try for the first time.

Fallout 4's next-gen update is out now

Fallout 4 players on PS4 and Xbox One are getting a free update that includes stability improvements and fixes for quest and login issues. A free update is also available for PC that includes support for widescreen and ultra-widescreen monitors, along with various fixes. Additionally, Fallout 4 is now available to buy in another place: the Epic Games Store. Not only that, but Fallout 4 is now Steam Deck-verified for people playing on Valve's handheld device.

The new patch for Fallout adds more Creation Club content, and it's free. This includes "Enclave Remnants" content that players can acquire by completing a new quest, "Echoes of the Past." For more, check out the full patch notes below. There are new items to collect, too.

What effect this new update might have on Fallout 4 user-created mods remains to be seen. The developers of the Fallout London mod delayed their release due to the next-gen update. If you're looking for mods to play, check out GameSpot's rundown of 50 of the best Fallout 4 mods in 2024.

Also note that, as Bethesda rolls out the update across console and PC, the Creation Club/Mods menu was temporarily down, but they're now back online. Another key thing to know is that Fallout 4 is free on Game Pass and via Game Pass Core.

Fallout 4 Patch Notes

New Creation Club Content Free for Everyone

Enclave Remnants brings the Pre-War cabal, The Enclave, into the Fallout 4 storyline. In this new quest, “Echoes of the Past,” can you stop The Enclave from spreading their dangerous ideology and gaining a foothold in the Commonwealth?

Along with workshop items and the Enclave Colonel uniform, we are including the following previously released Creation Club content:

  • Enclave Weapon Skins
  • Enclave Armor Skins
  • Tesla Cannon
  • Hellfire Power Armor
  • X-02 Power Armor
  • Heavy Incinerator

Makeshift Weapon Pack

Whether it be grenades or piggy banks, there's no shortage of objects you can transform into murderous projectiles with this collection of unique weapons. Included are two grenade launchers, a Nail Gun, Baseball Launcher, Saw Blade launcher, and piggy bank based weaponry.

(Quest "When Pigs Fly" starts at a merchant workshop northwest of Greenetech Genetics.)

Halloween Workshop

On the eve of the end, the New England Technocrat Society has thrown a spooky Halloween gala for anyone with the nerve to attend. Drop in on this fa-boo-lous pumpkin-lit soiree replete with witches, cauldrons, and ghouls, and unlock 38 new spine-tingling Halloween props to decorate your settlement! Includes new wearables, such as the iconic De-Capitalist helmet!

(Quest "All Hallow's Eve" starts by tuning into the Mysterious Signal on your Pip-Boy.)

Changes and New Features

  • Native PS5 and Xbox Series applications. Includes performance and quality mode options.
  • Performance mode: 60 FPS target, 4k resolution, standard settings, relying on dynamic resolution scaling.
  • Quality mode: 30 FPS*, 4k resolution, ultra settings, should not require dynamic resolution scaling.

*When connected to a 120Hz display, Quality mode will target 40 FPS. When connected to a 1440p display, the title will run at 1440p resolution at 60 FPS w/ ultra settings regardless of rendering mode

Bethesda games are good without mods and that's how the vast majority of people enjoy them.

@itsnota2mer: Just ain't the case. Wasn't even until the last Skyrim release console players got to use mods at all, and console Oblivion/FO3/NV players never have.

Mods are overrated when it comes to Bethesda games. Not to detract from the legendary modding scene or the great work done there, but the whole they're unplayable/not fun without mods thing just isn't true and most players don't use them, nor wish to.

Just recently I spent more time configuring Skyrim VR mods using wabbajak, so about as easy as modding can possibly be, and even then I spent more time fiddling with settings than I did actually playing the modded game, and that's an instance where the modded version IS substantially better than the retail version as a VR experience, so I can only imagine how someone with no PC/mod configuring experience would want to spend their time downloading and configuring stuff to get a high res rabbit skin for Skyrim.

@Ohaidere:

People on PC will struggle to complete Fallout 4 without mods. Loading times with high level characters (and being a Beths game means there's lots of them) often take 2 minutes+ and sometimes lock up altogether due to a bug with fps being tied to data streaming. It's a thing that generally gets worse as times goes on with a character. A simple mod can bring all loading times down to <5 seconds.

PC players playing the game much over 60fps wont be able to complete the game as physics and animations break and accessing consoles can become broken/inaccessible breaking many parts of the game halting progress. And many conversations get cut off as the talking animations ends long before the audio has played. This new update still hasn't fixed that.

If I play on my ultrawide monitor I rely on mods to get the aspect ration and HUD looking right (even then I've never been able to get everything fixed as some HUD elements, like Powerarmour HUD is still at 16:9 ration with the sides cut off). This new update was supposed to bring "ultrawide support" but it still doesn't fix these issues.

So yeah, most PC players will be using mods and I imagine most people playing on console today will be using mods now they're so easy to install/use.

@analgrin: I've recently (2021...okay o guess that's not as recent as I'd like it to be) done about 100ish hour playthrough of FO4 on PC with no mods and I can't recall a single bug (I'm sure there were some, but nothing significant). My PS4 playthrough in 2015 was longer and also didn't have any issues.

I'll conceded that 100 hours for a playthrough is the tip of the iceberg for some folks, so what you're referring to with the loading bug is likely not something I'd have run into, and I HAVE run into issues in Oblivion and Morrowind with longer playthroughs.

And I'd definitely agree that people will use them more with how much easier they are to add in and console access. And frankly they should when it's as simple as checking a box in a menu, as something as simple as the survival mod can fundamentally change the way you do a playthrough.

I'm not against mods. I'm just worn out the trope that these fantastic games are just a punishment if you don't use mods.

@Fairmonkey: If Fallout London were superior they would've built an entirely new game from the ground up. But even having all of their assets premade for them they can't get their MOD out. And now they're using this patch to excuse their lack of a finished MOD.

Guaranteed by the end of the year they'll announce they aren't working on their MOD anymore.

I'm a huge fan of New Vegas and 3, bought the Xbox disc when it came out, but still haven't played it, so this is pretty awesome! Wish I had a 120hz/vrr TV for that 40FPS mode! I'm hoping Digital Foundry covers the changes.

“Next-gen” for Bethesda though doesn’t mean that. Fallout 4 was 2015, and it felt and resembled early 2000s. This update might feel like 2008.

Took me quite a while last night to realize that the PS plus giveaway would not get the PS5 upgrade. About 30 minutes later, decided to try the disc I had and viola! Worked..

Runs very nicely on PS5 in Performance. I think I’m going to commit to this game this time lol

Last time I abandoned it pretty fast and mostly due to the fact that it ran poorly on the previous generation. It was all so stuttery.

Amazing improvements by the dev team! As we all are aware the PS5 is really showing its age and is barely able to output 4K resolutions, so it is surprising that the team was able to get this to work on such limitations! The Xbox version is arguably less impressive though, due to pairty limitations imposed by the PS5 it seems the Xbox version was held back a great deal in this update.

Here's to hoping the PS5 Pro will alleviate these issues! 😩

@mdignishere: Lmfao. How are you blaming PlayStation for parity, when it’s the Series S’s fault, if anything? You have the most shill comment I’ve read in a long time. The Series X is only slightly more powerful than PS5.

@stickemup: I kind of agree as a Sony fan myself, but like you said the Series X has been shown to be more powerful than PS5. I am more or less asking to get the same experience if we both paid for a $500 console. We should not let Sony slide with this 😅

@G-Corleone: Its not as much fun as New Vegas but still very good.
The vanilla game has shortcoming but with the expansions and updates it got better.
For the little money it costs now with all the expansions ,i think you cant go wrong.

It's really a pointless update. It has some minor bug fixes and adds a few camp items and a couple armors and weapons. I don't think anyone would have wanted to trade their modlist breaking for this. That and I'd rather be playing Fallout London.

Those consoles never really felt like they came out or replaced the previous ones.

@Willy105: Look @boobytrap, @Christine_K, @G-Corleone, and @stickemup. I think what Willy is trying to say here is that the console hasn't really made a splash or impact like the PS2, PS3/XB360, or the PS4/XB1 did.

When it comes to games the 9th Gen PS5/XBSX is inferior to the 8th Gen PS4/XB1. 8th gen just had a flat-out bigger and better library of games subjectively/objectively (A lot of 9th gen games are playable on the 8th gen, but not the other way around.). Plus the biggest games this gen Are mostly Remakes/Remasters from RE4, Dead Space 1, FF7, The TLOU remake, TLOU 2 remake, the Witcher 3 remake, Demon Souls remake, MGS 3 Remake, and PoP:SoT Remake.

Everything this gen just feels very safe, even more than the last gen. It doesn't help that 50% of the middle of this gen was scrapped because everyone, and their mother, grandma, Grandpa, dog, cat, hamster, ant farm, and goldfish were trying to make a live service game that no one wanted. We now have a King Neptune-sized bald spot smack ass in the middle of 9th gen, that was supposed to be filled with an avalanche of Double-A & Tripple-A games (Similar to what happened to the XB1 last gen).

Also, it really didn't help that this gen started off while everyone was having financial issues and scalpers bought up 70% of all first and Second-year 9th gen consoles. Meaning the majority of the consoles where sitting in a garage/storage room and not on a entertainment center.

@illegal_peanut: Gaming is dying because it’s not profitable outside of mobile. Find a new hobby. Between gamers not willing to pay above $70, piracy, gamers coordinating boycott campaigns against your product for seemingly insignificant reasons, and coordinating downvotes on preview content and review bombing after release, the chances of a developer spending a ton of money and making next to nothing is absurdly high.

The release calendar this year is a barren wasteland. DD2 might win GOTY by default.

@Baconstrip78: It's dying because game companies aren't making what we won't, outside of Japan. It's as simple as that.

Maybe add in less GaaS, Battlepass, MTX, Grindy content, and Seaons passes. And add in more fun content, Quality Stories, Interesting Art direction, and kink.
