Fable studio seeking devs with experience reimagining franchises

New job listing at Lionhead Studios calls for person with proven ability for bringing new ideas while "ensuring heritage is respected."

Fable developer Lionhead Studios posted a new job listing recently seeking a developer with a "background working on new franchises or reimagining's of existing franchises."

No Caption Provided

A call for an animation director (via OXM), posted this month, adds that a desirable candidate would have a "proven ability to bring new ideas to new franchises whilst ensuring its heritage is respected."

The job posting suggests a return to a series Lionhead Studios has worked on before. The Guildford, United Kingdom, developer has created a handful of franchises, though its most well-known work is the Fable fantasy role-playing series.

Another new job posting, this one for a core engine programmer, seeks a developer with experience making games on Epic's Unreal Engine 3 and/or Unreal Engine 4. Past Fable games have been built using various iterations of the Unreal Engine.

Lionhead Studios, a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft Studios, has not provided any details on its current project, though recent reports peg this game to be a next-generation title with massively multiplayer online elements.

The company recently hired MMO veteran John Needham to lead the studio. He was formerly the CEO of Marvel Heroes developer Gazillion Entertainment and, before that, City of Heroes maker Cryptic Studios. He has also been chief financial officer at Sony Online Entertainment.

If Lionhead Studios' current project is a game for Microsoft's next Xbox, it could be unveiled as early as next week during the company's next-generation reveal event on May 21.

"a next-generation title with massively multiplayer online elements." Oh, like Diablo 3 or Simcity? Games that contain what people dislike about MMO's, but don't contain the elements people enjoy from MMO's? If so, that's a brilliant idea. Why, both Diablo 3 and Simcity has been successful. Would they be more successful without their pseudo-MMO requirements? Who knows, but companies will continue to claim that they made the right choices.

I personaly prefered fable 1 over 2 and 3, since it had a mature story line, RPG elements (much more developed than those of the sequels), beautiful art design and it´s just an experience that not many games have manage to recreate. I think that the next step that Lionhead needs to chose, is a more mature and polish game, instead of relying on cheap commedy over narrative. I trully love Fbale, I´ve even started playing all over again for my 21 time and still get inmerse within the story with moments such as the raid to Oakvale, the prision escape, the coliseum and many other moments. PLEASE PLEASE make the next installment what the franchise deserves

Man has vision of what interactive entertainment could be.

Man is excited.

Man shares vision with future potential audience.

Audience lauds man as visionary.

Man works hard to realize vision, but falls short.

Man delivers somewhat less revolutionary project.

Man is shit on by aforementioned audience for the rest of his life, called a liar, and vilified at every mention of his name.

I really think Ninja Theory should handle the reimagining. Could you imagine Peter Molyneux and Tameem boasting about the same product at the same time? Heads will explode. They'd probably say the game was better than a cure for cancer, or something.

The biggest issue the fable had that it was never design to live up with the hype. Ever since fable 1. I enjoy 1 and 2 a lot. But to be fair I was able to speed fun fable 1 with 4 hours in my second play through. I enjoy Fable 2 more because it felt more open, but that's it. I' ll welcome change of mechanics with out shoe honing more kinnect like Microsoft will totally do

Instead of "reimagining one of their existing franchises, why not try and make a new one? The last two fable games have proven to be complete crap. and even Fable 2 was overrated (It really needed to stay in the fantasy-era of Fable 1 before it had all of the industrialization and such.)

If they really insist on treading old ground, than how about Black & White. This game is awesome and has a lot of potential. It's one of the few games that could actually benefit from supporting the Kinect as well. If the next Kinect is as accurate as reports claim it is, than this would be a good route to take.

Myself, personally, I would like to see the return of B.C. Anybody that doesn't remember this should go check it out on Youtube. Really ambitious project that was supposed to be one of the big exclusives for the original Xbox. It deserves a second change IMO.

@DarkReign2552 Damn, I dont usually comment, but Black and White with Kinect is a very good idea. Of course if the next gen Kinect is as accurate as they say.

They 'reimagined' everything after the first game for no discernible reason and everything fell flat on its face. Mongs.

Love the Fable series but it's always been kind of obvious the developers aren't talented enough to really do what they want to do..... 3 was the most obvious one... I almost feel like they gave up... hopefully they come back from that.... regardless of what people say I was happy with 1 and 2 even with the BS hype that came with them...sometimes you just need to appreciate something for what it is

I just hope their next Fable release will have PC version and be more mod friendly. Mods can extend so much the life of games, to bad not many developers understand that.

Fable TLC was one of the best games I've played and not to mention the story was amazing and the lore of the fable universe is very under rated. If they made a Fable for next gen based on a prequel to Fable 1 i will be in love.

I'm sorry, but imo Fable games were meant to be in the "Guild" time frame. This whole time table thing with going 500 years in the future is dumb.

@Malscyllis With a prequel they could form the story around how the Guild was made in the first place. Could be outstanding!

The system requirements for MMO's are getting steeper and steeper every time a new one comes out. I hope that it's not an MMO, even though the idea sounds awesome. I would much rather have Fable IV, with a focus on console.

@Earl-of-Death @Fartman7998 I always thought that they could sort of "reboot" the series, in a way of speaking, by returning to The Old Kingdom. It's far enough away from the trilogy that it won't matter. They can return back to the swords, bows, and magic days.

While I can't say much in favor of Fable III, one of the things I do remember about Fable II that made it stand out among most of the games that I've played is the way the world reacts to you. In the beginning know one even knows your name but if you become a hero people crowd around you screaming marriage proposals. Become a villain and entire towns flee in terror at your approach.

I can't think of any other game I've played where the world reacts so strongly to your actions and it would be nice to see it in future Fable Games . . . hopefully with some other refinements.

@Necro_Fear89 That could be crazy enough to work. Then again if the next Fable turned out like TES5:Skyrim or TES4:Oblivion it would need patches and possibly a texture pack. Also a good modding community.

Sadly, Fable is cursed by its name as its games seem to be stuck in time with each release. Even going backwards with the release of The Journey.

Ironic is it's name. Forever it's gameplay as old as a fable.

From when it was first announced to now, it's just been downhill. No one being better than the one before it.

Although I do enjoy the Fable games:

I don't play them for the story- SnoreFest

I don't play them for the gameplay- Repetitive button smashing.

I don't play them for the evil vs. good concept- even though I'm evil every time.

I play them because I can buy houses and businesses and sleep with prostitutes and marry multiple women and have kids that I throw money at in a minimal effort to "Raise" them.

Sad to say it's true and with an 'M' on their games they should really focus the gameplay for a mature audience. The gameplay is so simple, a 5 year old could play it and master it's mechanics. The only thing good about Fable is the fact that you can be a rich bastard who doesn't care for his kids and sleeps with any and as many women as he wants.

Maybe it was a bit to harsh as I did enjoy 2 & 3 but not near as much as I enjoyed the amazing Fable 1 played that game through 3 times.
