Fable III rules UK sales chart

Lionhead's regal sequel makes number one in its first week; Rock Band 3 fails to make the top 20.

No Caption Provided Lionhead's newly launched Fable III landed first place in the sales chart for the week ending October 30, with FIFA 11 in second and Fallout: New Vegas--last week's number one--dropping into third. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011, and The Sims 3, the three other new entries in the top 10, arrive at numbers five, seven, and nine respectively.

The reign maker.
The reign maker.

Bad news for MTV Games, though: Rock Band 3, also released last Friday, hasn't broken the top 20; it made its chart debut at number 26, despite positive reviews. Though sales of this third major iteration in the music game series, particularly of hardware bundles including the new instruments, may pick up towards Christmas, the lukewarm reception in its opening week contrasts with Green Day: Rock Band, which entered the chart in June at number 14, and The Beatles: Rock Band, which debuted at number four in September 2009.

Top 10 Entertainment Software (All Prices), Week Ending October 30, 2010

1. Fable III (Microsoft)

2. FIFA 11 (EA Sports)

3. Fallout: New Vegas (Bethesda)

4. Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft)

5. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II (LucasArts)

6. Medal of Honor (EA Games)

7. WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 (THQ)

8. Professor Layton and the Lost Future (Nintendo)

9. The Sims 3 (EA Games)

10. Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 (Konami)

Leisure software charts compiled by Chart Track, (C)2010 ELSPA Ltd for the week ending October 30, 2010.

I like Fable III but honestly I thought it was the worst of the three games. It was probably the easiest RPG I ever played. There was little to no challenge in it.

I think the biggest reason Rock Band 3 isn't selling is because of the necessity to buy yet another bundle of instruments. I'm also guessing a lot of the demographic the developers are targeting, as well as pre existing fans of the series, are holding out until the pro guitar is released. I'm a fan of the series, but with the introduction of a keyboard (finally) and the pro guitar, I hope this is the last game. What they need to do is focus on producing quality, durable instruments and dlc packs to keep the music fresh. Not a new game all together.

@Tokinblckgie it's not that bad i think what he means is it got a close review to Fallout: New Vegas same kind of RPG problems for the most part and complaints about glitches and well i find little excuse for so many glitched games this holiday season compare the two and fable doesn't look like it has glitches fallout Ive seen seen game breaking after game breaking glitch often losing hours of play time and even if it has more content it has no more depth than fable lets not joke but compared to my game slowed down once or twice(oh god it's loading this game is broke *sarcasm*) or my dog ran off a few times only to return before i knew he was gone or that he wasn't suppose to do that and oh god the one time a pie texture was out of place didn't even distract me when i know i don't need 6 saves cause half may fail noting it is one thing but they are far to harsh and ready to throw out the good about it glad UK isn't as picky as the USA go beta test something and see what real glitches do I've had things break my computer game dev's work harder than you think

I love how all the haters slam Fable 3 because of Peters "broken promises". But I never heard of any promises for Fable 3, or Fable 2 for that matter, that Peter lied about. He specifically stated before the release of Fable 2 that he learned his lesson from promising things, and then not delivering.

"Fable has traditionally been very well received in the UK, is there a specific reason for it's appeal there? Is it because of it's distinctly European style architecture and renaissance accouterments?" Because all the extremely strong british regional accents, british architecture, british history references and Lionhead being british aren't obvious? XD

rehatheway: "I always try to enjoy a game despite it's issues and only gripe when they become so noticeable that the experience suffers for it." To a lot of people the experience does suffer because of the issues the game has. Besides, if people don't make an issue out of a game's shortocmings, how wil devs now where to improve? As long as they aren't bashing it with some fanboy bias then critique should be welcome.

Im not surprised that Rockband 3 didnt make it into the top 20. The music genre was a fad and it was good while it lasted but the market is getting saturated with them and people are getting tired of them.

Oh and I also think RB sales suffered from bad or more likely lack of advertising, because I was completely unaware that it had been released and I went to 2 different GameStops for each of my FU2 and Fable III games.

That's awesome, I feel that Fable III deserves it's position at top. I also wonder how a game that has such high sales and is often described as a great game all I read is all of the bad design and technically errors instead of all of the creative and fun elements these games add to game play overall. I always try to enjoy a game despite it's issues and only gripe when they become so noticeable that the experience suffers for it.

Not enjoying Fable 3 so far. It's just not as fun as the previous 2, for so many reasons. But then again, Fallout 4 and Force Unleashed 2 were both slight disapointments too, so I'm not too surprised Fable 3 is leading sales.

@supernaught360 It probably has something to do with being a good game. I do remember an awesome advert running on telly for Fable 2 though. Maybe that has something to do with it? Who knows?

I find Fable III to be very fun. There is only one thing that bugs me in the game... the dog is an idiot. I don't even listen to it bark anymore. As for menus.... I don't let that get in the way of enjoying a game. I think everyone is too busy tearing games apart than enjoying them. As for Rockband... its just too pricey right now. Their sales will get better though.

@supernaught I think it is because Fable is a distinctly british game the name Albion is just a old term for England or the whole of great britain, everything down to the accents of the people, the humor, the voice talent (Stephen Fry, Jonathan Ross etc) and the world itself the soldiers even look like redcoats.

So far Im not enjoying this game. I dont know why but I just carnt get into it and yet I really liked Fable 2. I think its because Peter Molyneaux made out that this would be the best game ever made and well...its not, not even close. And the whole pause menu is just stupid and time consuming, even looking at the map has become a chore. It seems to me that they have spent more time changing things that didnt need changing.

I have no gripe with Fable, or the 360, just Molyneaux. I know that most people just see the game, but I hate that these sales just add to Molyneaux's already inflated ego. Just because he has a couple of groundbreaking games in the 90's he see's himself as some kind of legend! Well here is a message for you, Molly; You're a hasbeen, a fossil of a designer! Let somebody else, with skill, take the reigns of the Fable franchise so it can actually grow and develop with each sequel. Not release the same half arsed game every time.

'Bad news for MTV Games, though: Rock Band 3, also released last Friday, hasn't broken the top 20' Maybe that's because the shops are doing are crap job advertising it, just like RB2 I struggled to find this in most of my game shops shops, 5 out of the 6 where I live don't have it in stock and the one that did only had 2 game boxes on the shelf and it wasn't even in the new release section. When I asked about the keyboard I was told they didn't stock them instore you have to order online. Whereas GH WOW has a massive point of sale display at the entrance of the store with about 15 guitar and 40 game boxes.

@thorughfire I actually think Fable 2 is going to be my fav Fable still so apparently that's only your opinion.... in fact I'm disappointed that they changed some of the stuff in Fable 3 from what it was in 2... more so than the jump from Fable to Fable 2.... I still think 3 is a very entertaining game and I'm thoroughly enjoying it

@uglypinkmoose Fable hasnt been good since the first game. They added too much in Fable 2 that they failed to work on the things that needed work ,Like maintaining a good story. In Fable 3 they pretty much reworked the combat and emotion system (that didnt need work at all) and they ruined a lot of things. When Fable 3 was hyped we expected it to be good,Not crap. It was so overrated,I refuse to buy the next fable game.

@daquinot I feel your pain about release date launches for the PC... However, please bare in mind that companies tend to make more money off of their console sales due to pirating and other obvious racketeering business practices like DLC *cough cough MOH*. Additionally, at the end of their developmental cycle they tend to focus more heavily on refining glitches in the game for console versions since frequent updates aren't allowed (I am pointing my finger at you Xbox). My point, although I cannot wait for the good games to be released for PC, I am glad they take the rational approach and spend a little more time ironing out the kinks. I rather wait for a complete game than spend $$$ on buggy games like fallout.

Peter, I love ya' man...but you have to get out of bed with Microsoft and come in for the big win for PC users. This console-exclusive crap is for the birds and is completely unlike anything Bullfrog would have done in the past.
