"After much review and consideration, Daybreak is discontinuing development of EverQuest Next," Daybreak president Russell Shanks said.

"For the past 20 years, EverQuest has been a labor of love. What started as a deep passion of ours, as game creators, grew into a much larger passion shared by you, millions of players and Daybreakers alike," he added. "Watching EverQuest's ability to entertain and bring people together has inspired and humbled us. It's shaped our culture and has emboldened us to take aggressive risks with our game ideas and products. When we decided to create the next chapter in the EverQuest journey, we didn't aim low. We set out to make something revolutionary."

Shanks went on to say that game cancellations are a reality in the gaming business. For EverQuest Next, he explained that the PC MMO simple was not fun.

"Inherent to the creative process are dreaming big, pushing hard and being brutally honest with where you land," he said. "In the case of EverQuest Next, we accomplished incredible feats that astonished industry insiders. Unfortunately, as we put together the pieces, we found that it wasn't fun. We know you have high standards when it comes to Norrath and we do too. In final review, we had to face the fact that EverQuest Next would not meet the expectations we--and all of you--have for the worlds of Norrath."

Though EverQuest Next is no more, Daybreak will continue to support EverQuest and EverQuest II, both of which are "going strong," Shanks said.

Overall, the EverQuest franchise remains important to Daybreak, Shanks srressed, adding that fans of the franchise can "rest assured that our passion to grow the world of EverQuest remains undiminished."

In an interview with MMORPG, Shanks teased that the EverQuest franchise still has "plenty of room" for new stories to be told, potentially across games similar in size and scope to EverQuest or EverQuest II.

"The future of the EverQuest franchise is important to our company and you have not seen the last of Norrath by any means," he said. "It's just as engrained in our hearts as it is for our players. We helped usher in the era of MMOs because we loved the idea of bringing gamers together within the game worlds in massive numbers, and we've continued to build on that over our 20-year history. The adventures within the worlds of EQ and EQII continue unabated today, and there is plenty of room for more."

Shanks also said he's enthusiastic about the MMO genre overall, citing Bungie's Destiny as a game that does some interesting things in the space.

"I believe the magic of MMORPGs and MMOs in general has not been diminished," he said. "In fact, games like Destiny incorporate many of the compelling elements of classic MMOs, which expose them to a new generation of gamers. Good MMOs bring players together. The activities within the games provide social opportunities, as well as challenges and achievements that build lasting friendships, camaraderie, and long-term enjoyment. These elements, combined with scale, differentiate MMOs from most other forms of entertainment. I don't see them going out of style, ever."

After so many years and tons of alphas and betas including .... gag Landmark - EQ next or Landmark never ran right on even the highest end gaming PC.

I would love to see Everquest Online Adventure that came out on the ps2 come to steam in some form. Much of the talent and battle system became WoW.

The dumbest thing ever done in the history of MMORPGs was the decision by the idiots at Everquest to launch a sequel. The idea it could have another sequel was equally dumb. All EQ2 did was double the cost base - there was barely a single new user created but the costs of the service doubled.

MMORPGs should never have sequels. Even Blizzard know this and there is little they won't do for a buck.

I was just thinking about this game yesterday after reading about the Fable cancellation. I thought "I wonder what happened to that Everquest game?" I didn't think it would be answered so swiftly.

@Pelezinho777: yEAH. Landmark was the alpha part of EQ next- building and gathering part of EQ next larger mmorpg. Yeah see - this has been around for 4-5 years, Landmark is a money grab and a poor one.

"It Wasn't Fun"

So make it fun? Giving up means admitting you're not good enough or capable.

I was actually very much looking forward to this. You had my hyped for years. What a waste of time.

@lostn: There were bigger problems with the game then just fun .... the coding was atrocious. I have a very high end cpu and the game dragged so badly when you first played an alpha build nearly 4-5 years ago and the pay trial version beta 4? I think, all have ran so poorly. http://store.steampowered.com/app/297810/ The current version of Landmark is plague with problems - and there is just not enough updates or work done on the base code of the game to fix all of the problems.

It is hard to say how much they have already spent, and at this point just by reading the reviews, it might be a good idea to scrap the engine and start over with the assets. At this point I do not feel their present team is capable of a large mass market MMO.

@validifyed: Called it as soon as SOE became Daybreak.... I should add however, that I still blame Sony for this more than I blame Daybreak. they never should have sold to a rape, pillage and move on investor firm this is the inevitable result.

@Wesleypipes77: How? They didn't want to be affiliated with Sony anymore and they thought they could handle this themselves so they went their separate ways. Obviously they couldn't.

@Wesleypipes77: Couldn't agree with you more, Daybreak are really just doing what everyone should have expected them to do, Sony are the ones who handed it over.

That said, I do think that a large part of Next's downfall was its base concept, its a shame Ill never see how they planned to implement it all in the end.

When it comes to bad MMO-related news, just once can it be about Eve Online being cancelled? Still waiting to go out and buy whiskey in celebration.

Original EQ was probably my fondest memory in gaming. I sank a lot of hours into it. I was looking forward to EQnext as I've not really found an MMO that I really like since Rift but alas... I suppose I didn't really like the looks of EQnext from the clips i saw of it, and if even the devs claim it wasn't fun i probably dodged a bullet.

I may be the only one who still likes the old model of MMORPGs where it's about exploring, grinding, meeting people, raiding etc. Most games now want to focus your time on farming and sandbox building. Every game it seems wants to have sandbox building in it, hell, EQ next released a whole side game just for that. It doesn't interest me at all, unfortunately.

So... still waiting on the next good MMORPG to play with my friends ;)

I was really looking forward to this. Nothing in gaming has matched my EQ experiences, not even modern EQ. I love the lore of EQ, would be nice to see a new game of some kind. How about a new Champions of Norrath?

I honestly think that the final judges in which a game is fun or not should be players and fans. Any artist will tell you that your harshest critic is often yourself, and in many cases you'll create something that you regard as an absolute failure only to have someone else look at it and be very impressed by it, and likewise you may make something that you think is perfect, only to leave others confused/dissatisfied.

Daybreak should have put the game into open Beta and asked for feedback from fans on what they though and how the game could be improved rather than dumping it altogether.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: Agree. Though I would say people who bought Landmark got access to that beta, We spent money on Landmark strictly because 2 years ago when Alpha Started for it, it was clear as day in all the print that playing it was specific to creating EQN. Landmark going to be its own game was just a happy outcome of the toolset, We never invested in Landmark, we invested in EQN and even got bonuses for EQN on some of the packs.

Considering the investment the people who spent $100 dollars should have at least gotten a closed look at it and shortly after the other tiers. The news really is hard on Landmark supporters today. Being lied to over the last year after David Georgeson left was brutal, they obviously didn't see eye to eye but its quite obvious if without him the game was cancelled then why fire him at all? He was awesome and he will create an amazing game in the near future

I'm kind of glad they manned up and said it was terrible. usually developers just say screw it, release their crap game anyway, and put the rest of the budget into marketing.

It's sad that the I.P. has become somewhat worthless, when it's due credit for starting the MMO craze.

Hope for the best for the franchise.

@Dilandau88: Landmark is a building tool/game. It's main draw was that your creations could end up in EQN. Landmark has been in beta for a long time, but it's officially launching this year. The whole point of it is missing, though, so who knows if any will play it. It's supposed to be free to play.

The problem with MMOs these days is they are becoming and more a way to not engage with other people. Despite the trolls I do miss when MMOs were more open to actually meeting other people. They've become much more closed off from that than they used to be.

Anyway, Destiny isn't an MMO. It's weird that people are confusing that, but then I recall they had that same trouble with another "not MMO" named Guild Wars. The Division is also not an MMO.

Now I'm going to enjoy reading the stupid comments on this article. There are some real bangers here such as below me there's one that basically says "If the game's not fun make it so it is. Don't cancel it." Ya, we got some real winners here.
