The next entry in Atlus' Etrian Odyssey series is a remake of the first game, tailored for the 3DS.

The box art cover for the upcoming role-playing game, slated for October 1.

The remake will be called Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl and will be out on October 1 for North American markets. The game is an update of the 2007 RPG previously on the DS, and will feature two modes: classic mode and story mode.

The first mode lets players create their own party and play through a series of dungeons filled with all manner of random encounters. The second mode tells the story of main character Fredericka and her companions as they solve the mystery behind her past in the land of Etria. Unlike in the previous game--Etrian Odyssey IV--players can mix and match skills they acquire throughout the game.

RPG fans in North America can preorder the game for $39.99 on Atlus' North American web portal. Check out GameSpot for coverage on the fourth game.

This sounded interesting and having not played the original I picked it up. I've only played through the starter area and plan on tackling my first 'quest' today. Its a bit different - having to draw in the map seems to be a time killer- or an attempt to create interaction in a fairly static (so far) game.

Seriously, a remake of the first one (I mean, the fourth one)? I am not replaying what I already finished. Too bad, because I was almost pumped up reading this!

Love to know if Europe is getting this one. Etrian Odyssey II and III which we never got at all was no big deal because of importing, but 3DS disallows that with its pointless region locking.

@Ultramarinus Actually, Europe is getting Etrian Odyssey IV on 3DS barely over six months from US release and barely over a year from JP release, so I'm very optimistic about grabbing this remake. I'm actually reasonably confident it will come unless by some stroke of disaster EO4 fails so bad that NIS America (who appear to be handling the publishing now, probably something to do with Atlus' whole being traded as if it's a commodity lately - Index still holds it technically for now, but SEGA look to maybe be acquiring them now) decides not to give it to us.

I'm actually right now, finally polishing off a 100% run of the original - I beat the superbosses and have only four more bosses left before I complete my Monster Compendium. Item Compendium will require slightly more work, but not much more - it's mostly the five remaining drops from those four bosses (which means at least five battles), plus two or three others from other bosses and two or three harvested items from the postgame strata.

Europe will get it 2 years later, if ever, as usual.

Now all we need is a possible European release.
