EA: Mirror's Edge sequel a "true next-gen idea"

Patrick Soderlund says upcoming free-running game would not be possible on current-generation platforms.

The upcoming DICE-developed open-world Mirror's Edge sequel is a "true next-gen idea" that would not be possible on current-generation platforms, according to EA Games vice president Patrick Soderlund.

No Caption Provided

"It just happened to be a game design that I don't think you can build on an old-gen machine," Soderlund told Polygon in a new interview. "It doesn't work the way it's designed. And that also appeals to me. We could maybe get it to work on one, but we would have to compromise on too many things. With this we didn't have to."

"It's a true next-gen idea," he added. "With next-gen execution and that felt right."

The upcoming Mirror's Edge sequel was announced during Electronic Arts' presentation in June at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Recalling the project's inception, Soderlund said he was inspired to get behind the game after senior producer Sara Jansson presented her ambition for what the game could be.

"It was something that I just looked at and said, we have it, let's do this," Soderlund said. "It wasn't so much the story, even though that's very important, but it was about the game and how the game was going to be played and what you can do and what Faith does. It amplified the things that were good with Mirror's Edge and downplayed the things that were bad in a very natural cool way and combined it with a bunch of really inspiring cool things."

The original Mirror's Edge sold a couple million units, according to EA Labels president Frank Gibeau, who said in June that the sequel will "reach a bigger group of people."

Little is known about its gameplay outside of Gibeau describing the game as an "open-world action adventure game."

The game is currently in development for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. According to developer DICE, it will be released "when it's ready."

Exciting to be sure. I can see a future for this game and it's storyline. Faith remains a favorite character in recent memory. I imagine they could take this franchise in quite a few interesting directions. One direction I would love to see them entertain is an even more dystopian world like out of Blade Runner. I'd also love to see some method of inspiring replaying the story mode over and over, like some rewards system which unlocks over multiple replays (different outfits, different skills, variable tattoos). New effects could also be introduced. The high you get from this game is when you are operating at super high speeds and connecting all your actions -- like when you reach a red door and slam it with your hand. I'd love to see more of that, and introduction of more blurring effects when at high speeds, perhaps accompanied by some sort of sound that emphasizes your speed and the accompanying high.

And it wouldn't hurt if the soundtrack was mixed by Burial and featured some of his higher speed dubstep. That mixed with this game would be an awesome rush.

I'm certainly not concluding my beliefs yet, but what the #@$% is up with game series needing to appeal to everyone. It's like trying to infuse pop and metal music. I know they do it for sales but it's really disappointing for original fans and with games like Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, Splinter cell, Hitman, etc.. excluding Mirror's edge, the others have "appealed" to the audience by being more action-rambo based instead of intense action and suspense. I guess this generation of kids only play games where you shoot the hell out of everything? Maybe so, but I still support my favorite games regardless if they go in that direction and I am very excited for this new Mirror's edge as long as they don't screw it up too bad. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of awesome sequels out there, hell black flag looks better than AC3, GTA V, blacklist is decent, etc.

@zulwalks I know that was kinda my point and it is just disappointing, that's why the first game of a possible series is always the best

The first Mirror's Edge felt like an experiment and when doing experiments not everything goes great. It has many things going for it, but could do with some improvements. Some say it was short, others say it would have been better to focus on the parkour mechanic and not cram uneven combat sections into it. With Mirror's Edge 2 they could improve all those things and I think they're up to the task.

I remember Mirror's Edge being belittled for it's story line and concept, still I bought it for xb360 and loved it, even bought it in the steam sale a couple of years ago and enjoyed playing it on the pc even more so. But it was a game that did not get very good reviews and rumors of a second installment were quickly laughed of. After the Mass Disappointment there was a lot of talk in some forums of what people were playing instead of ME and reminiscing of past games, Mirror's Edge crept in and suddenly many people came out and mentioned how they enjoyed playing it.

... So don't ever say EA isn't listening.(!?!?!)...and I suddenly get that funny squashy feeling in my little gamers heart and I can't help thinking, there goes another one of my re-playable value games down the drain. Old habits die hard and the loss of real genre has spoiled too many games of my past franchises. There are too many could have been epic games out there, which I would have gladly payed double the money out for, if only they stayed in their respective genre but I find myself flooded with second rate games that don't live up to their hype. If only EA would get this right, they would be right on track ... what are the odds on that one ?

Just develop it for PC, because the PC is always "next-gen".
Then scale it down to whatever the current console platform can handle.
Problem solved, thank me later.

By the way, whenever a big publisher (especially EA and UbiSoft) say that they're going to make a game more accessible or they want to reach a broader audience you can be sure that they're going to run your beloved franchise into the ground.

When he said the new Mirror's Edge is going to "reach a bigger group of people" you can pretty much safely assume it will be fully linear, have weapons everywhere, ammunition is no problem, your character autoregenerates health, it will have social media integration (also convenient to justify always online DRM) and will be absolutely boring with no replay value what so ever.

Prove me wrong, EA, please prove me wrong and make this new Mirror's Edge a masterpiece, true to the original, building on its strengths and make it playable offline, with no Origin DRM or exclusivity and no always online requirement.

@bloody-hell as much as i would like to bash your head in for saying those awful things, i fear you may be right, but all i need in me2 would be more races. if ea somehow stayed in the background for once and let the good people at dice do their work mirrors edge 2 could be a big success

Oh look, the cycle continues again like it does every time a new generation starts

"We couldn't make this on the old consoles, THAT'S HOW GOOD THIS GAME IS"
"The AI couldn't be programmed to be this good on the old consoles, this will be like playing with a real teammate"
"There will be so much detail that you can see the SWEAT dripping from the character's face"

Of course, none of this stuff ever means anything. It's all up to how dedicated (or lazy) the developer is.

Gee, it sure was nice of them to describe why Mirror's Edge 2 couldn't be made on older machines. Obviously current consoles wouldn't look as nice, but we've seen fairly complex physics and designs in some games. Although most games have been dropping those in favour of looking nice (like going from FC2 to FC3, Crysis to Crysis 2 and SW:TFU to TFU2.) Still, the point stands that current hardware is capable of heaps, but we never see it because then games won't look as pretty.

@anybodykilla15 @flammable_zeus that should be a game standard from now on, I'd even buy crappy games. bored of shooting each other? help each other rig both bases to explode. driving around in one big circle putting you to sleep? drive out the gate and into that homeless shelter. too exhausted to move the ball another yard? sledgehammer the **** out of those bleachers

Every time when EA say "reach a bigger group of people" about a game I liked, I begun to panic.

I hope they don't broke it like what they did with Dead Space 3 (universal ammo for microtransaction).

Right now I can't think of a way that they can, but surely EA will come up with something.

@Chaos_Dante_456 You have to remember that current consoles are 7-year-old hardware. It's gotten to the point now that every step up in graphical fidelity comes at a cost to other elements of the game - hence why a lot of games have become more constricted and linear in terms of gameplay as gfx have gotten better.

Of course, PC has been able to do 'next-gen' stuff for a long time - and I'm glad that the cap imposed by catering to crappy old console hardware will finally be lifted and we can see some truly awesome stuff.

yeah, except that a lot of good IP has been squandered on mediocre graphics and "lesser" version of games in terms of the amount if NPCs on the screen, frames per second, scale of the levels, etc.

Open world, baby, with multiple routes to the destination. The better you become at the game, the more you can manipulative the surroundings. Implemented correctly, it would offer shitloads of replayability and make online something quite fascinating indeed.

Other than that, a smoother implementation of combat and a bigger feeling of consequence to getting caught. At its best, it was like Trinity running from the Agents at the start of 'The Matrix'. I want the feeling all the way through.

Cannot wait.

@Zidaneski @soulfulDAGGER It would be like in the Matrix, if you fall off a building, then... your mind makes it real!

Lol, seriously no one would ever get killed or even injured that way, not even when you die in dreams do you get injured in any way. However, the psychological damage that could occur is another matter. Too much realism is never good.

@soulfulDAGGER I'd be genuinely surprised if it didn't support the Rift. That thing is the true next generation of gaming. The PS4 and XBone are just playing catch-up to our old PCs instead of actually bringing anything new to the table.

@demondogx It is a FPS technically...but the free running is the main aspect. If they took away free running which i highly doubt, then it will be god awful. Also, if they change the gameplay so that it is more focused on shooting it was also be a terrible game but not surprising coming from EA. At the same time however, they'd literally have to rewire the entire engine almost if they created a mostly FPS, I don't know doesn't make sense to me.
